Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Ola Mr Benitez » Tue Aug 02, 2005 2:16 pm

He's not going to come out and say, "YES WE WANT M.O." as his price will start to climb.  He may well just be keeping his cards very close to his chest, as he always does
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

John,

Can you tell me where Rafa has been quoted as saying he does not want Owen.

He has only said his PRIORITY is a CM or a RW, but NOT that he does not want Owen (I will stand corrected if that isn't the case, obviously  :D)

Rafa has been quoted as saying he wants 2 more players, a centre half and a right mid, so I guess that means he doesn't want Owen.  On top of that I think he actually has said that he is not looking to buy Owen, although I can't remember the source (think it was a radio interview).

That's exactly the case. Here is the question that matters from the interview.

Interviewer: "SO that's a no, a categorical no to Michael Owen" to which RAFA replies "We're not thinking about a centre forward right now"....

Come on lads - he's thrown the media on this one - he clearly and cleverly dodged this one, without denying interest. He could have EASILY closed the door on Michael Owen but he didn't.

Good point. He also said that we're not looking to sell Baros but we've been in talks with other clubs about selling him. Also he will be on the bench again against Kuanas.

Benitez is playing his cards close to his chest as said earlier.

also, with le tallec going away on loan, baros  set to leave and sinama pongolle still injured till later on in the season( same for mellor aswell), we only have cisse/crouch/nando.
and IMO cisse is the only striker we have with pace, so if he got injured we would lack in the "possibilities" department upfront.
therefore could rafa sign owen after we get guaranteed champions league football?

Thats the clincher, I think we are waiting until after we qualify to sign a few players.

I'm a bit 50/50 about Owen, he screwed us over when he left for madrid and he is a bit one-dimensional, but he could still knock in 20 a season....

when it comes to owen i think we should think with our head not our hearts, i was gutted when he left and did not want it to work out mainly because of my dislike for real madrid but he is a gaurentee he will get 20 goals and i would rather he scored them for us than man u if he comes back he has a lot to prove and fans to win over which will make him try a lot harder which all goes well for lpool,
we need 4 top forwards  cisse mori crouch owen will do for me with pongo inthe wings if needed.

I wouldn't say he screwed us over mate, he wanted to better himself - fan's should be for that. I was one of Owen's critic's when he left the way he did, but my frustration's where purely because we had lost a class player.

Let's just sit tight and wait to see what happen's.

I was very angry when he left last season, not because he left but in the manner in which he left. I said at the time good riddance, but u cant put personnel feelings over the good of the team, and as we seem like were selling Baros (which we shouldnt) then Owen would make a great addition. I would rather him with us than against us and his proven goal scoring ability would be a much needed addition to the team

In Liverpool we appreciate loyalty.. the whole 'scouse' thing counts for a lot.. We're not Barcelona or Real Madrid, we do not have the funds to go and buy a replacement of the same calibre, especially when he leaves without a warning.

Most fans were pi$$ed off with Owen because he left when we REALLY needed him .. we barely got 4th place and we were all moaning. At least when Stevie decided to leave we had won the champions league and we were in a far better position, that's why lots of people wanted the money to rebuild the squad.

Of course supporters complain when a player is "disloyal" to them, but are quite happy to accept a "disloyal" player from somebody else, Owen screwed us over a little bit, but Harry Kewell bent Leeds over and thoroughly rogered em, and we laughed heartily (until he started playing).

It's all part of the fun.

....................................................................Seriously people we have got to get over MO im sure we could go and find/buy a striker of the same class/mould ..........................................................................................

..............Maybe Anelka or someone...................................................................................

.............................................Owen maybe desperate to find a new club but we are not that desperate to find a striker.

Sorry tried to resist but I just have to pull you up.

1) On the contrary, I think this sends out a totally different message to Europe. Along with our sucess and Rafa's obvious high regard in European circles, I think this move would send out the message that Liverpool Football Club is back, big time amongst the cream of the European Crop, and that players moving from one European Superpower to another is the norm.

2) What do we have to "get over"? Michael Owen is the best English striker in  football, third highest English goalscorer and a legend in Liverpool football club history. No matter what happens from now until the end of time that is the case.

3) If you nett off the £8m we received from Madrid, from the reported £12m that it would take to bring him back, thats only four million, and if Baros is leaving then we are up on the deal, and that does not even take into account the reported £1.5m we got from Celta Vigo for Nunez who was part of the original Owen to Madrid deal.

4) Maybe Anelka or someone?? Owen versus Anelka is a total no brainer. Owen has no "baggage" Anelka has bucket loads, Owen guarantees 20 or more goals, Anelka it depends on the mood he is in.

5) Owen will not be desperate to find a new club, even if he sits on the bench and scores another 15 goals plus as sub for Madrid he will be first choice England striker come the World Cup, there is no one at all who even comes near him. Also, as we strive to improve on last season, 20 league goals could well mean 20 points, and a much higher finish. I am desperate for that.

He was never worth 8mil + Nunez, Fair enough he wanted to better himself but he shouldn't have had us over a barrel like that, he knew exactly what he was doing with one year left on his contract and refusing to sign a new one.

You can't blame him for going to Real Madrid when the offer came in for him, they are after all the biggest team in the world, with the best squad.

I think no one really blame him for wanting to go to Real but it was simply the way he handled the situation. That's why many of us felt betrayed as he is now percieved as a traitor and a liar. I'm not saying he is that kind of person but he acted like one in that particular instance. Besides, there is no guarantee he will score 20 goals again in a season. Another thing I notice is why noonene wants him now. If he is that great, teams should be lining up for him but it is not the case and is that odd???   ???
