I consider Simao on a different level to Pennant, he is not exactly lightweight, he is well built, well proportioned and has excellent balance.

I'd consider Simao a step up from Pennant.

Hmm, and bump the excellent and reliable Steve Finnan to the bench? I don't think so. Alves is great at bombing down the wings and attacking, and crossing, but defensivly, it's very rare for a player to have both, and he's weak in this department. I wouldn't compromise a rock solid defence for that kind of weakness, especially when it's not too sound on the left when Riise is there. But then again, he would offer us a differnt option from the bench if we were in need of mixing things up, or needing a goal from somewhere. He'd be an excellent signing for us, no doubt. I just can't see him walking in and taking Finnan's possition right off the bat.

Pennant has shown decent form and has undoubtedly improved, but to the level we require?

Nobody, Gerrard is not a right winger, nor is Garcia, he is a link man.

Pennant, IMO lacks pace, strength, and powerful running. He also lacks the degree of quality that Simao has.

As for Alves, we have one of the most astute right backs in the league in Finnan. He defends and he is consistent.

He is not as flashy as Alves, but he would be a big risk IMO, a guy playing in Spain, renound more so for his ability to get forward than his ability to defend. He is not particularly strong, and he would need time to adapt being from South America.

I don't see that position as a priority, right wing is higher on the agenda, certainly in the top three.

I don't see our defence as a problem seeing as we've concede bugger all goals over the past two seasons.

Light years better my ar.se, two entirely different styles, Alves the better technically but Finnan is a very adept full back. Our defensive record proves it.

And as you suggest, he is immune from being benched, I would say you are being a tad premature, and ignorant of the fact that he hasn't even played in England before. If he doesn't perform, he'll be benched.

difference of opinions on that...u dont thik pennant is any good... i think he can cut it...
gerrard is a good right midfielder who can replace pnnant and garcia can cover in that position as well... we dont need to hae 2 quality players in every position...in a perfect world we would but we dont have to have 2 out and out quality wingers

finnan has been consistent... a very good defender for us whenever he played but he offers very little going forward !
i must admit that u to some extent are convinving in that finnan should be playing with alves made RW if he signs but again... "big risk" ? "not particularly strong" ? i dont think u'v seen enough of alves to be honest ... hes quality and  dont think we'll pay around 20mill for a player whos not worldclass at what he does... daniel alves is a worldclass rightback...same cant be said about finnan...

if hes played as RW...im not sure alves would perform like he has done playing as RB but HE HAS wat it takes to be a brilliant winger.... guess that covers both ur posts !

finnan has been consistent... a very good defender for us whenever he played but he offers very little going forward !

This is one thing I fail to understand with you, Gerrard on the right doesn't work long term, he is a centre Mid, he should NOT be cover for the right unless we're absolutely desperate.

I strongly doubt whether he has the quality we need in the long term any way.

Pennant is not a particularly powerful runner, nor does he have great pace, he is a mazy runner with decent skill and good crossing ability. I consider Ronaldo or Robben powerful runners, but not Pennant.

Of course he's a risk, he's a south American in Spain, it is a different lifestyle and a different style of play. He won't get acres to run into or plenty of time to bomb it past people like he does in Spain. In the EPL players are snapping at your feet from the word GO.

i think what the guy ment was finnan rarely overlapped the right winger. Alves does it often. this also helps the Rw as it allows the RW to us ethe overlapping FB and cut inside for shot. Finnan doesnt normally cross from the byline

alves scored more than 5 and had more tan 16 assists this season...you still seem to think he isnt world class and finnan is ?!

daniel alves does like coming forward, he aint been dubbed "the new cafu" for nuthin, so they need more of a defensive/holding right midfielder because if he goes shooting up the side like, he likes to do, we need one that wudn't mind sittin in just behind him just incase they do break on us, because lets not forget wat happens to united when that neville goes forwrd with ronaldo, and the other team breaks on them, their defense falls apart

You clearly have a problem in understanding what EFFECTIVE means.

Finnan does overlap, he does get forward and he does suppl crosses. Why do you think 95%of our UCL goals have come from crosses this season?

Likewise, you may be convinced by the "world class" premise, but I'm not, especially as a right back. I want someone who can do the job EFFECTIVELY and Finnan has been that man.

I have seen plenty of Alves and his attributes going forward are fantastic, but as a full back in England? Where you need discipline and physical strength as well as the ability to get forward at the RIGHT time?

For me, Finnan has been the man to fulfil that position exceptionally.


As for the "world-class" premise, get over the flashy technical ability of the guy, I want someone to do the job and the job of right back has been no problem for us over the past two seasons!!!!!!!!!
