Deal has been competed and he took pictures wearing the shirt, welcome to Liverpool football club. I think this was a great buy and he will fit in very well. All his attributes complement how we play and the team.

Welcome to LFC Luis Diaz. You’ve definitely made the right decision. Spurs flatter to deceive and Levy is only interested in money. Man United on the other hand are just a bunch of scrapping egos - horrible club !!

Spurs “threatened to report” Julian Ward to FSG over Liverpool’s Luis Diaz deal
January 30, 2022
Jack Lusby
With Liverpool hijacking Tottenham‘s deal with Porto to land Luis Diaz for £50 million, the north London club had “threatened to report” the Reds’ recruitment staff.

Diaz has officially made the move to Anfield for an initial fee of £37.5 million, with a further £12.5 million agreed in add-ons as he becomes Jurgen Klopp‘s new No. 23.

The 25-year-old is a surprise signing for Liverpool, who rarely conduct major business in the winter transfer window, but arrives following a tip-off over negotiations with Spurs.

Tottenham had been heavily linked with Diaz in the closing weeks of January, but as with Adama Traore – who has opted to rejoin Barcelona on loan – they have been let down in their pursuit.

According to the Telegraph‘s Sam Wallace, such was the manner in which Liverpool gazumped them to the transfer, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had “threatened to report” their recruitment team to Fenway Sports Group.

However, Wallace reports that the methods of Julian Ward, who led the process as he prepares to take over from Michael Edwards as sporting director, left FSG “delighted.”

Having repeatedly turned down Porto’s asking price of £50 million plus add-ons, Liverpool had nevertheless “asked that they could be informed” if any deal was struck for their priority target.

When Spurs agreed a package similar to that eventually paid by the Reds, Porto alerted Ward and he, along with Edwards and head of recruitment Dave Fallows, “moved quickly.”

With FSG sanctioning the fee, Liverpool jumped ahead of their Premier League rivals as Diaz made it clear he preferred a move to Merseyside.

After a FaceTime call with Jurgen Klopp, the club arranged for medical and media staff to head to Argentina to finalise the move and prepare its announcement.

Crucially, Liverpool have agreed to pay €8 million to Porto by Monday, which has allowed the Portuguese side to avoid UEFA sanctions during a period of financial difficulty.

“On Thursday, the Spurs chairman tried to get back into the running with an improved offer to Porto,” Wallace adds.

“But these things tend to have a momentum of their own. Those crucial funds for Porto had been arranged. Diaz and Klopp had spoken. The deal was moving inexorably in Liverpool’s direction and by close of play on Friday the backdoor closed gently behind them.”

Liverpool host Tottenham in one of the final games of the Premier League season, currently scheduled for May 7, which could see Diaz play a major role for the Reds

****************************

:grinning: hilarious that they would be so offended because we did what they have done many times. Not sure what Levy was expecting the owners to do, sanction Julian Ward for doing his job? As the article shows, spurs were outplayed. I think Porto just used Spurs to hurry the deal as he was probably always coming. Spurs were negotiating probably from a position of strength in there eyes as Porto had financial troubles. They got out hustled.

Luis Diaz’s “incredible” rise to the top – and Carlos Valderrama’s role in it
January 29, 2022

Luis Diaz is on the cusp of joining Liverpool in a £50 million deal and his journey from Colombia to present day has been brilliantly documented by a South American football expert.

A delegation from Liverpool are to meet with the 25-year-old in Argentina over the weekend to conduct a medical and put the rubber stamp on the deal to take him from Porto to Anfield.

It will seal an exciting addition to the squad after the Reds acted swiftly amid Tottenham‘s pursuit of the winger, bolstering the attacking options as Jurgen Klopp‘s side compete across four fronts.

And Diaz’s journey to this point makes for compelling reading, with South American football journalist Simon Edwards providing insight on Twitter into his incredible rise and the person Liverpool are adding to their dressing room.

The winger is from Barrancas, a remote village in Colombia and is a member of the Wayuu people and at 17 was dangerously underweight playing on a dusty pitch for a team run by his family.

At a Colombian trial for the Copa America of Indigenous People, Diaz impressed and was picked for the tournament that led to Colombian legend Carlos Valderrama taking action.

He was to join Barranquilla FC thanks to Valderrama’s recommendation before then moving across to Atletico Junior and in the space of three years, Europe and Porto were calling.

It’s been an incredible rise for Diaz who then went on to represent his country at the senior level in 2018, just two years after his senior debut for Barranquilla.

He would be a regular for the 2021 Copa America as Colombia finished third and with Diaz as the competition’s joint-top goalscorer alongside Lionel Messi (4).

A trip back to his village was then in order for a player Portuguese outlet A Bola described as “an ace that seems to literally live on a separate planet.”

It’s been an amazing story so far and Reds will be eager to see more successful chapters written when he arrives at Anfield.

Exiting signing, can't say I know a great deal about him. But if he's good enough for Klopp, he's good enough for me.

Wonder if he'll get the usual 1 or 2 month bedding in process or will start straight away?

I'm made up we've got this lad if he's half as good as folks are saying he is.

It also fits into the category of buying one 50 million player a season to improve the squad as City do. Diaz and Konate are two very welcome additions to the squad in the last 6 months.

Good luck Diaz.

Don’t know much about the lad but he looks an exciting signing, good age too, at 25 he’s right on cusp of his footballing prime and just about to enter the best 4/5 years of his career so injuries permitting we’ll be seeing the best version of Luis Diaz that there will ever be.
Although our front 3 arent slow they aren’t quite as quick as they were 2 or 3 years ago so this lad will inject a bit of genuine pace back into our attack. Because he plays on the opposite flank to Trent as well I can see a partnership developing between the two of them as he uses his pace to get on the end of long raking diagonals from Trent in behind opposition defences.

Jota, Konate, and Diaz. Players between 20-25 that have already showed up well in decent leagues and in European competition. These are the types of players we have gone after over the last 5 years or so (Mane, Salah, Fabinho, etc). We don't seem to have an appetite to take big risks on wonderkids with no track record and with the exception of Thiago we haven't really bought anyone bang in their prime. It all seems to be about bringing in players who are on an upward trajectory and then having them go up a level with us and seeing out their peak years here with the club not bothered about cashing in before they get older.

A very good signing. We've had players that were phenomenal for us that were signed in January in the past decade or so (Suarez, Coutinho, Sturridge, Virgil) so I hope history repeats itself. Considering this signing is probably the last bit of business done at Liverpool by Edwards, I'll consider it his parting gift.

Anyway, welcome to the biggest club in the world Luis!

P.S. so is he cup tied in the CL or did the rules change recently?

Much needed competition for Mane, looks like a real talent. Hope he settles quick and gets firing.

According to new rules Damjan he will be eligible to play in UCL, probably taking Minamino place.
