shocking peice of business in a summer of shocking Liverpool transfers

Yet Merieles spent the majority of last season being quiet on the pitch , he also then put in a transfer request to leave for one of our rivals.

If a player doesn't want to play for Liverpool then he can leave.

The picture people paint of Merieles is a lot different to what we witnessed on the pitch and why he still spends a number of games in the bench for Chelsea .

He had a good Jan feb for us but spent the rest the time in hiding.

remind me, who was voted PFA fans' player of the year, last season?

Raul wanted out because the club went against its word in regards to giving him a better deal if he had a good season. Instead he got f**ked off after we went back on that and wanted out and i didn't blame him in the end.

we sold him and replaced him with utter dross in the form of Adam

Merieles won that award because it was voted in late feb after he had his 2 month spurt of scoring goals

No one had even heard of the award before then!!

He didn't have a good season so didn't earn this pay rise !

He was as bad as Torres and Masher - putting in transfer requests to force a transfer through !! :censored: off out of the club then.

It's amazing how people try to change history.

He's a gifted player no doubt but far to slow for the way kenny wants to play . Henderson however although still very young and learning has it all , he will be brilliant in a couple of years . He has an engine and can see a pass , he loves getting forward and tracks back . He's everywhere and when he learns to tackle better and have a bit more composure on the ball he'll be a star . i really thingk he's be the next big thing for us .

Yeah ok !!!

you mean Benny the Noon hadn't heard of it

ah, that ok then...if you don't know about an award then it's clearly worth nothing

He had a good first season and, as i said, was head and shoulders above both Spearing and Adam...in fact add Henerson, Downing into that, because Meireles was often played out of position on the left and right flanks and he still better

Meireles was one of our best players last season. When you take into consideration that he was new to the league, and was played out of position for most of the season thats a big accomplishment. Especially considering we had hodgson for half the season.

He was then not only refused the payrise he was promised, but also practically pushed out of the firstteam because we wanted british players instead. He accepted low wages for his first season because he wanted to play here. I dont blame him for leaving the way he was treated, but i wish we stop selling players to our rivals.

meireles was a good player but you need to have a drive and winning mentality about you to be a player that wins trophies.
i think he lacks that.
you only have to listen to gary neville, when everyone on saturday was going on about the handshake and the media storm he kept reiterating that the 3 points were the main thing not the soap opera surrounding the game.
when everyone else in the commentary box started flapping like hens when luis blanked evra he kept saying who gives a :censored: if they dont get on it`s the points that matter.
thats the mentality of a winner, our players had that mentality in the 60`s, 70`s and 80`s but we dont have it any more.
meireles was good but he wasnt prepared to run through brick walls to win

I agree with most of what Benny says here..  The PFA is voted for at a really stupid time.  It was voted for right at the end of Meireles' ridiculous run of 5 goals in 6 games or whatever it was, where he looked amazing.

The rest of the season tho, he was extremely inconsistent.  He never lasted more then 70 minutes before he was dead.  He could do some really great stuff sometimes, but others he was just nowhere to be found.  Him winning the PFA player of the year award was a joke. I laughed extremely hard when I saw he won that.  That's like Bale winning prem player of the year last year.. Absolute joke.

out of position? Nobody knew where he was at his best such were his inconsistencies! He's joined a Chelsea midfield we're currently sitting four points behind with one league goal to his name - fair to say he's hardly made an impact there

Yes we are lucky that Chelsea, and Arsenal are in trouble as well. It gives us a chance to get to 4th.

After the League Cup final, we play at home to Arsenal and away to Sunderland. Chelsea meanwhile are at home to Bolton (3pts) and away to West Brom (quite likely 3pts). They are currently 4 pts clear of us... and after these 2 fixtures theres only 11 to go. So if after the two games that gap extends to 7pts thats a pretty tall order (no chance). Therefore we must take six points from our next two games if we are to have a chance.

Personally i dont think we are good enough. Man for man this is the least talented midfield we have had since the dark days of Souness as manager. I always used to enjoy writing down our midfield.. Redknapp-Ince-Berger-McManaman.... Gerrard-McAllister-Hamann-Smicer... Gerrard-Sissoko-Alonso-Garcia... Gerrard-Alonso-Mascherano-Riera... nowadays i glance over what we have and hope for the best. Kuyt as a right midfielder, Spearing as a holding midfielder, Adam as a playmaker, Downing as a winger, Henderson as an up and down midfielder. If you were compiling a list of PL players in each of their respective categories they would all be way down. You wouldn't hear any top 7-8 side saying.. would quite like to have that Spearing... etc etc.

This season the standard in the fight for 4th has been low.. Chelsea have not looked this bad in a decade, Arsenal have the weakest team since Wenger's been there...so its been a golden chance. If we had bought quality in the summer then 4th would have been ours. I cant see next season being as poor as they both will reinforce. Its imperative then that the major surgery is carried out this summer, and is a success.

Cant agree with the first paragraph. I still think the race for 4th is wide open and granted we are under pressure to catch up before its too late, I our think our chances hang on the next 2 games alone.

The other stuff is hard to argue against. We do have a bit of an issue though with many of the player needing t be replaced being ones we bought in the last 12 months or so. We paid over 80million on Carroll, Downing, Henderson & Adam and many dont consider any of them to be good enough for the starting 11.
The likes of Reina, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson, Lucas, & Gerrard are all players we've had for quite some time and somewhat constitute the spine of the side. Enrique and Suarez have been good additions to the sides and deserve their spot in the starting 11.

The question becomes this: Do we seriously expect to have 80+million pounds worth of players on the bench for next season ? If not, do we sell some of them? At a loss?

Outside the mentioned players we have players like Carra, Kuyt, Bellamy, Aurelio, Maxi + youngsters such as Kelly, Coates, Shelvey..etc

Realistically, I can see us letting Maxi, Aurelio, Aquilani and maybe Kuyt go. Between them they'd get us about half what we paid Downing. Which would mean that any money we want to invest would have to come straight from the owners rather than us selling to buy.

Anyway you look at it, that sentence you put:

"Its imperative then that the major surgery is carried out this summer, and is a success."

applied more to last season than it does this one.

Oh i agree with the bold comment, it was hugely important that the surgery carried out last year was a success.. hence "its been a golden chance, if we had bought quality in the summer then 4th would have been ours"... but as it hasn't been a success then Kenny is only going to get one more shot to get it right (if hes given money of course). Houllier was never given a second chance, his summer dealings in 2002 finished him.

The one concern i do have is that we could see a repeat of money squandered as we have owners who are brand new to the sport, and have almost no understanding of worth. I cant think of any other owner who would have sanctioned 35m for Andy Carroll.

As regards our next 2 league games, lets say worse case scenario we lose both, Chelsea win both.. we are 10 points behind with 11 games to go, and given the side we currently have it would take a bigger comeback than Istanbul to turn that deficit around. We are not good enough to go on a run of 8 or 9 consecutive wins. Therefore we must constantly stay within reach (no bigger gap than 4 or 5 pts).
