I think he will be a very good player for us, he has been doing well when he is coming off the bench lately

as i said elsewhere, it would be ideal if we could send him out on loan to another premiership club.

i've been fairly impressed with what i've seen. decent engline, good passer and can take a decent set piece. he's hardly been helped by being stuck out on the right in games when he's come on. he's a central midfielder.

At the moment I do think he is another player who is 'typically' over hyped by our own.

I ws one of the first to rave about the lad and I must admit he has been very inconsistent when he has played but i've still seen enough to make me believe he can be a reall player. The pass for Suarez' goal on monday night was excellent and he's shown some other glimpses in cameo roles he's played this season. Kenny seems to like him and i'm still confident we will see more from the lad if he can get a good pre-season behind him in the summer.

Agreed, mate.  It's important to remember that he often comes off the bench late in games and has been stuck into the LB slot a couple of those times as well.  It's hard to establish a consistency when you are playing only in fits and starts and coming on late.  IMO, it's a bit unfair to compare him to the likes of Kelly and Flanagan or even Spearing, who've benefited from a run of games.  His pass the other night shows the first glimpses of something and I like that he's a positive, drive-em-forward type of player looking to make things happen.  It may be too early to truly big him up but it's also too early, IMO, to write him off.

well said BB.
he's shown enough talent when he has played and there are far more positives in his game than negatives.
he's also had a lay off with injury and if this season was another 5 games long i reckon he could force his way into the starting line up.
doesent deserve to be written off just yet!!

That's pretty absurd. How can we let a player like him out on loan when all his best things are about to come? The boy is young and is about to expose all delightfulness!!!

Really? Jonjo has only just come back of a long injury lay off. As soon as he came on he set up a goal for Suarez with a great through ball. I think he's been great. btw Kelly has been out injured for a while too, unless you mean't youve been impressed with his picture.  :D

:D    Maybe its just the hype around Shelvey thats making me expect more.. The through ball was brilliant and he has been good at times, but he has had some pretty poor performances too.

Whereas kelly, Spearing and Flanno have been very good every time they played.

Agreed.

Well, I'm sure we all agree he needs games. So who does he replace, week in, week out, in our team? No-one.

So a loan move to a club that will play him is a great idea. As long as he plays regularly of course...

That through ball he played was hardly 'eye of the needle' stuff, let's not forget Suarez's excellent movement too if we're gonna bang on about that pass. The Fulham defence left a gaping hole between the FB and CB and even Carra would have been able to make that pass.

Also remember Shelvey trying the 'hollywood' ball when we were under pressure from Fulham. He tried to picked Suarez out with a 60 yarder only to give the ball and momentum back to Fulham. At that point the commentator remarked that Kenny was on the side line yelling at Shelvey to play it simple to Maxi, instead of looking for the glory ball.

He's still got a lot to learn, will he be as good as Gerrard, NO. You can see it already imo. He has the potential to be very good but he's got some way to go imo.

Yeh and what was Spearing doing when he was 19? Oh yeh :censored: all. Flannagan has been consitent but through injury's hes had more time in on the pitch. Kelly is exquiste so im not arguing hes been better although hes also over 2 years older. Shelvey plays in a role where you have to make things happen and thats alot harder then just getting away with being steady. Hes class and was far more influencial then Flanagan, Spearing and Mierles was (a portugal international) when he came on the pitch. Dont forget hes had a big injury lay-off, which some people forget. Not slating Flanno or Spearing coz theyve more then done enough to justify being in the team.

It wasnt just that pass he started to pass all over the pitch and its range of passing and great close control that impresses me.

Spearing. As good as hes been Shelvey is better, the timing of his injury was unfortunate for him and is the reason Spearing has had his chance.

Yes, perhaps so. But, let's remember Gerrard is back. And if we pick up another central midfielder in the summer... then a loan is a good move for the kid I think.

If we can give him plenty of game time, sure, no need. But if all he is likely to get is 5 mins at LB here and there, then loan him!

I think we're splitting hairs here. Its rather like Man Ure in 94/95 when they had Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, Neville x 2, Butt etc.. coming through and folks arguing who was best before they had a chance to shine.

All our youngsters are looking good and its reasonable to assume that 4 out of teh top 6 will have long term Anfield careers. Who will turn out to be the best we'll have to wait and see.......

I agree Reg.

As far as those suggesting loaning him out next year.  I have one question.  When was the last time loaning a player out helped his growth and made a contribution to LFC?  Who was the last player in a decent side to make a return from a loan and have a good career?

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

We can't expect too much too soon from someone like Shelvey as he is a young lad who hasn't played all that many minutes in the EPL and has only just returned from injury. I haven't seen his reserve performances but from what I have seen of him in the EPL he is not yet ready for a regular 1st team slot. If Kenny goes out and does what many expect in the transfer window and brings in a few players + Aquaman might return then I see Shelvey's chances in the 1st team limited and maybe it would be best to send him out on loan either to another EPL team of the Championship...
