Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby bigmick » Mon Jul 19, 2010 2:36 pm

I'm absolutely made up, now hopefully a few of the people who have been a bit down in the dumps it's fair to say can cheer up a bit. It shows many things. Firstly it shows that contrary to some of the scare stories, BIG players are happy to sign for the club while Roy Hodgson is the manager. Many feared that that wouldn't be the case, thankfully their fears were totally unfounded.

Secondly it shows that we are prepared to shell out a lot of money on a proper flair player. Cole may well provide "options and possibilities" in that he can play in more than one position, but he is a footballer first and foremost. He won't be tearing up and down the pitch, but he will provide much needed quality when we've got the ball, a welcome change of emphasis.

Thirdly it shows that we have the financial clout needed to pay big money in terms of wages and signing on fees. Once more some doubted this, and it's nice to see that some of the more dramatic predictions of our imminent demise were wide of the mark.

Fourthly and lastly (you'll be pleased to know), it shows that we have a manager who is well able to play his cards close to his chest yet come up with the goods. People said Purslow sold Benayoun and Roy had nothing to do with it, they said Purslow was doing the signing and the selling. I don't believe that to be true, I think it's Roy. Whoever it is though, 6 mill for Benayoun then Cole on a free is absolutely fantastic business by any standards.

I'm sure the money came into it but you'd like to think the lure of the club played a major part as well. All bodes well on the Gerrard front i think because I have no doubts they would have spoken over the last week or so since the rumours were going around. Great bit of business by the club. It's important we keep our best players until the club is sold so bringing in a high profile signing such as Cole can surely only make this more likely?

He's an excellent player. We became a very workmanlike team last season so it's good to see a player who is skillful, unpredictable and versatile come to the club.

Fingers crossed his injury problems are behind him because he could be a real gem for us this season. How many times has the little bugger scored the winner against us in the past? Am sure it's at least 3 times!

Im pretty sure the massive wage 90 grand a week would of been a very big pull to the player .

I should think both Arsenal and Tottenham offered him big moneyb too Ben, not to mention Man Utd who as you say were favourites to get him for a while.

I think it's probably time to not be quite so grudging in your praise for our new manager. It's time to admit it mate, he did a good deal here and fair play to him. Go on, it won't kill you .

or maybe he came for football reasons?

where would he play more regularly? here, spurs or arsenal? it's a no brainer. the last thing arsenal need is another diminutive midfielder and at spurs they've got modric, bale, lennon, krankjar etc.

How about Cole on the right side and give Babbel a season on the left to prove himself?

The thing is he gives us more options,

The debates will rage on, but Kuyt did help Holland to a WC Final playing on the right!

If Woy is to give Babel a run then Cole can play behind Torres.

Massive versatility in our front line now with our two FREE signings.

Have to say im not as depressed as I was yesterday. :-)

We have quite a few Chelsea fans at work and all have said if we can keep him fit we will see the best of him as he is only 28. I hope Gerrard and Torres recognise this as a sign that this club still aims to finish in the top 4. Don't get me wrong we still need another 2 players at least but this is a great start.
My new blog for my upcoming holiday.

Cole has to play down the flank for me... We have Gerrard and Aquilani who both play down the middle and contribute more going forward than they do at the back...

Having said that, I see absolutely no choice but to go for 1 striker yet again with the players we have at our disposal at present...

Personally i'd go for this

                                 Mascherano

                  Gerrard                      Aquilani

Kuyt                                                                 J.Cole

                                   Torres

Victor Meldrew, you never fail to depress me.

Cheered me up no end that has . Well played Roy , top signing and welcome Joe . In behind torres for me with gerrard back in midfield. Another thing aswell ,hopefully this will prove to Gerrard and Torres and Mascherano for that matter Roy's intent for the coming seaon.
