The more I look at the player we have now, the more confused I get about the Henderson signing and the C.Adam links..

On the one hand, signing Henderson for 20mill at this stage of the development of the squad where our starting 11 still needs a lot of improvement imo is a sign that the kid will be started from day1. In my books, we havent gotten to the stage where we can afford 20mill bench players who might improve in 3 or 4 seasons. Not yet anyways. That said, the only position where Henderson would be an improvement on what we currently have is the RM position, which would automatically point towards a 4-4-2 system.

With a 4-4-2 system

- we'd probably get the best out of Henderson (RM), Carroll (FW) and probably Suarez (FW).

-some of our current key players would have to be left out of the starting 11 (Kuyt, Meireles)

-while other high profile players would find it extremely hard to get any considerable game time (Aquilani, J.Cole, Maxi).

- Also, our main player and the best player in the squad (Gerrard) would have to adjust his game to play a CM role. Imo, he's nowhere near as effective when played deeper, and isnt the best at helping control the tempo of the game.

- Last point, where would C.Adam fit ?

4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 are probably the more logical options and would certainly give the squad a little more balance. However, unless we somehow manage to inject a little more pace and flair in the final third I still believe the squad seems a little too one-dimensional atm and players like Henderson and Downing (heavily linked with) will do little to help in that department

My preference is 4-3-3 as i think it would get the best out of Gerrard.
I have stated this previously about formations but i will say again. I dont think Kenny has one system in mind. He appears to me that he is wanting to sign players that give him options to play a number of systems.
I dont think we will play one system all season, it will depend on the fixture imo.

4-4-2 is completely outdated now at the very highest level. with the players we have, 4-3-3 is the way forward.

if we sign Mata I don't think a new striker would be too important. We'd have Kuyt, Suarez. Carroll and even Mata in an emergency

Suarez could play across the three tho he prefers to drift from the left. Mata is more or less similar in that respect. Some proper wingers in would be great

centre midfield we're spoilt though, expect a lot of rotation if we don't sell many players

It's all very versatile tho - I'm a big fan of that anyway  :D

you missed our Hendo btw  :D

we're def going to play 4-3-3, an maybe 3-5-3 on occasion and it's starting to look like we're going to have some decent strength & depth

GK - Reina

RB - Kelly (Flanagan, Johnson, Carra)
CB - Carra (Skertel, Kyriakos)
CB - Agger (Wilson,Ayala)
LB - Johnson (Agger, Aurelio,Robinson)

CDM - Lucas (Spearing, Gerrard)

CM - Gerrard (Aquilani, Henderson)
CM - Adam (Meirieles, Spearing)

RM - Henderson (Kuyt, Gerrard, Maxi, Meirieles)
LM - Downing (Surez, Gerrard, Maxi)

CF - Surez -(Carrol, Kuyt, Pacheco)

i think it's looking decent!

If we get Mata where is he going to fit in?

This doesn't even include the likes of Amoo, Ince, Sterling, Darby et al, and looking at last season we have a chance of some of our youngsters having a breakout season.

On a side note, we could put out an all british team (Reina being the exeption) that could do a real good job for us.......

4-2-3-1  (based on players we have now and assuming Adam passes his medical)

            Reina
Kelly  Carra Agger  Johnson

          Lucas    Adam
Kuyt         Gerrard       Suarez

                Caroll

If we do end up signing the likes of Mata, Downing or Lennon etc its gonna become really difficult to predict who'll be dropped etc.
I can see a lot of big name players on the bench providing a lot of competition.

Interesting that barely anyone has Hendo starting. If we're going for width and crosses I'd say Hendo is a better shout than Dirk

IMO, the key to success in the Prem. is the simplicity of the 4-4-2 formation. No need to explain why and go into details cos I'll be going off topic. So, like I was trying to imply my choice for a best formation would be the 4-4-2 formation. With the players we have now though, the best formation for us would be 4-3-3, but it really depends on who do we sign and who do we sell next.

With a 4-4-2 we'd probably play something like this:

              BACK FOUR AND KEEPER

  Henderson  Gerrard    Adam    New winger

                    Carrol    Suarez

For this to work, I think it really depends on who we sign to play on the left. I personally think that Mata wouldn't fit that much to this formation as Downing would (that's why I prefer him over Mata). For this we need a winger who stays wide, delivers crosses and has a good passing ability. Downing has that, as opposed to Mata who would rather cut trough the defense.

Not that Mata wouldn't fit at all to the 4-4-2 formation, but the better option for this would be Downing. If we want to play 4-3-3 though, Downing should never be an option. Mata would be perfect for that. With him our formation will probably look something like this:

                  BACK FOUR AND KEEPER

                           Lucas/Adam

              Gerrad                       Adam/Meireles

                       Suarez         Mata

                                 Carrol

Since Villa are being c'unts they can keep Downing cos there is no way that we're paying 20 mill for him. Although there are other players we can go for, my second option after Downing would be Mata. We could still try to play 4-4-2 with him but with this team and with Mata in it, the best formation would probably be 4-3-3.

I think we will go 4-2-3-1 but then again all teams are flexible in their approach these days.

                    Reina

Johnson    Carra      CB        LB

              Lucas   Adam

   Kuyt          Gerrard      Suarez

                   Carroll

If we play 4-4-2 with Gerrard and Adam in CM we'll be absolutely destroyed. :D

Surely you don't REALLY believe we paid 20m for Henderson do you ace?  IMO Adam is HIGHLY rated by Kenny and I fully expect him and Lucas to be our starting midfielders along with a third in a more advanced role, (Stevie, Aqua and Raul can all fill that hole).  Kuyt/Henderson to be the right side Downing/Suarez left with Andy up top.  We're going to be playing different styles but for the most part I think it'll be 4-3-3.
