With the transfer window about to swing open, I thought it might be interesting to note (and vote on) the quality that Rafa has added to the squad in previous winters.**  So, who do you rate as Rafa's best January signing and why? ??? (And, yes, I know that Masch came on loan initially and didn't arrive until February but I'm sticking him in anyway! :D ).

**The flip side, of course, would be to assess Rafa's worst January signings.  Can't be a.rsed creating a second poll, so if you're inclined, pick one from the following list:

Fernando Morientes
Scott Carson
Mauricio Pellegrino
Jan Kromkamp

Went for Fowler, i thought at that moment and time it was a masterstroke from Rafa, we needed a striker, the majority of fans were gutted with the manner of how he was sold initially and when he came in he scored some vital goals and didnt let us down at all.

Obviously Mascherano is a fantastic signing but for the impact and the lift it gave us fans at the time, definately Robbie for me.

Worst would be Pellegrino, he was well past his best and really struggled.
I dont blame Rafa too much as he was a top experienced defender who had been consistant for him for years, but he was a liability for us.
The goal that Nemeth scored for Boro at Anfield showed how far his legs appeared to have gone. Luckily we had Stevie to thank for getting us a point with possibly the best shot i have seen him hit later in the game.

went for mascherano. Added good stability to midfield. Was a beast in the middle didnt let anyone pass. Gave kaka a nightmare in the champs leage final. When taken off ac milan scored. hence why we needed mascha all the way in the match. Brill buy one of rafas best. Robbie did well when he came back. scored a few goals. was nice watching him in the red jersey again. skrtel is another player who i like. cheap but yet very solid.

Masch for me, I thought he had a terrific season last season, and while he hasn't hit those heights yet this season (Olympics?) has still been a pretty consistant performer.

Totally agree there mate i was going to go for mascha but skrtel has been nothing short of a revelation and will be in the future,he has brought more steel to our team as i thought it was near impossible to better our defence at the time.A close 2nd would be Mascha.

I can't believe people putting Robbie's name just because of what he done previous,ok it give us a lift but let's face it he was past his sell by date by this point.

All looks a bit defensive as there are no attack minded mortals.

and its debatable if Mascherano counts because we didn't sign him till later.

Totally agree. Value for money. World class defender.

Those who voted for Fowler. Get a life. This is football. Not charity.

So when Fowler come bak he didnt make an impact ?

And i am not just meaning giving the fans a lift either, he scored some vital goals as well as being able to drop deep and play the support role.

Obviously he wasnt the player he was first time around, but intelligence wise he was better than anything we currently have, am talking things like appreciation of space and bringing players into the game etc.

There's two ways of looking at this thread, the way i looked at it...initial impact the player had to the rest of the season.

Or the way the majority have, long term best buy in January, but thats not always what a signing in January is about, ask Harry Redknapp, the amount of times in the past he has signed players just to give the squad a lift and provide something missing for a short period.

Thats why i picked Robbie, nothing sentimental in that.

Good post and a agree.

I believe he had much much bigger impact than people gave him credit for. His performances were excellent aswell and we always looked twice as likely to score when he was on the pitch.

Hhhhhahh... the rose tinted glasses are out.

3 great signings - Masher, Agger and Skittle.  Masher by a whisker.
