Both decent enough players in their own right (?) but nothing special to me. Lucas is a short pass player with little or no threat to goal. Same with Mascherano who was the better ball winner but just as much a liability as Lucas
Aquilani had some class in my opinion. He was always looking for the forward pass. Unfortunately last season we didnt like going forward so he looked as if he didnt know what he was doing. As far as his tackling was concerned I can think of plenty of attacking midfielders, past and present who never put their foot in. Yet this seems to be one of his major faults to some.
I have said time and again that 7 assists and 2 goals in the small amount of time he played proves at least that he was going in the right direction.
Unfortunately Roy didnt rate him and we are struggling for attacking creative players.
Can he order him back or not?

the thing is ihmo the tackling thing. one in italy they always have one midfielder like a gattuso got no skill and one creative player like a pirlo whos tackling is non existent.. plus the lad had serious ankle surgery so put yourself in his shoes hes hardly gona go steaming in tackles is he. its the british mentality unless you get stuck in your no good. well look at bergkamp baggio zola di canio no of them could tackle but boy could they create things!

Played brilliant for Juve today. Is he out on loan or do they have an option to buy him? They will snap him up if he can stay fit for sure.

Would rather have the player than the money - we need someone with some creativity as we currently have none but Aquilani will never play for us again.

Solid game for Juve tonite @ the San Siro. Top performance!
Floyd stepped left and threw the hook that caught Hatton flush under the chin. Finally, the British champ had arrived in that mythical place of which his fans speak: Hatton Wonderland.

Good passer of the ball and maybe we should have kept him to see what he was capable of in a sustained run of games. Different kinds of players but obviously better than either Lucas or Poulsen whichever way you look at it. (Maybe the player weanted out, who knows.) That said, I think we overpaid by about a half and to spend that kind of money considering the risks (no football for over 6 months, his injury record overall, suitability to English game) and considering the alternatives, was downright daft. For your £20m you expect more certainty about what you're going to get. Along with the signing of Keane (when Arshavin was available for less), his signing was a critical mistake of the Benitez era. We had to get it right because of who he was replacing - Alonso. I remember at the time we signed Aquilani, Sneijder went for about £13m, a player many of us on here advocated, and he's since gone on to become perhaps the best player in his position in world football, worth about three Aquilanis.

Talking of people we could have signed, and I level this one at both benitez AND Hodgson, this fecking Raphael Van Der Vaart looks a bit tasty at Tottenham doersn't he? 8 million quid, feck me what a difference a player like that would make to us.

In his Wikipedia page, this is interesting -

"On 21 August 2010, a deal between Liverpool and Juventus was agreed, to allow Aquilani to go on a one season loan deal to Juventus. Juventus have an option to buy the player for 16 million euros at the end of the 2010-2011 season. Aquilani has since said that he has great plans when he returns to Liverpool once the loan deal is over, and hopes to get back in the Italian national team. After Liverpool's poor start to the new season, many fans have voiced their anger over the departure of Aquilani who they had high hopes for the 2010/11 season. During the 2-2 draw against Sunderland home at Anfield, a small section of the crowd could noticeably be heard chanting Aquilani's name."

I sincerely hope he has great plans on returning, although he will be hoping for a change of manager, I'm sure. I've always thought it was a mistake to sell Aquilani and I hope he comes back at some point. I would rather have him in the team than most of the midfielders being picked at the moment.

Look at Malouda at Chelsea. It was a couple of years before he started performing consistently well for them, and he wasn't even injured. Chelsea had patience with him which, sadly, wasn't given to Aquilani. He certainly deserved more time.

Just one of Roy's many mistakes in team selection, transfers and loan deals since he's arrived.
