Golf... who plays?

Just curious chaps, been away for a while and been playin alot of golf the last year and a half. Only been playing just on eighteen months...

Has anyone else took it up? The lads I play with all regularly shoot around 90 give or take five shots on a bad day or a good day.

Yet I was just wondering has anyone found a point where you become consistent? IE after about three years or so.

I broke, 100 after a two months,

Broke 90 after 6 and was in the 80's consistently at the start of the year.

I hit a couple of 78's and 79's earlier in the year but the last month or two have been shooting close to a hundred again... with the exception of the odd round.

I have packed in for the time being as it was doin my head in as everyone else I seems to know is pretty steady and playing in around a handicap, i got down to 12 and am back up to 19  :no

Basically the reason I started the topic to say that its a ***** game and I hate it (sort of) but want to know if anyone else has suffered the same sort of things as me?

It would really depend on the course to be honest as no two courses are the same.

I play a 9 hour par 3's and do it in roughly 35

The thing with golf is the more you practice you do the better you will become

yeah i play golf a lot mate and can relate to what you are saying  :nod  mentally its a very tough game and frustrating but the key is to keep at it.
im playing now almost 10 years and went from playing anywhere to joining my local club and have never looked back since.
i am off 12 now(11.5) so hopefully before the end of the year i can hit 10. at the start i would have been hitting the same scores as yourself but then began focussing on 5 shots per hole which is 90 and really taking the par 3's serious because they are the secret to any card. in the 90 you have allocated 20 shots to them and if you can par 2 and bogey 2 then thats 14 with 6 shots saved which brings the 90 down to an 84 or 82 which is a good round gross.
playing regular will improve you to a point that if you happen to not play for a while then you can still go and shoot a decent round. the real savings is in course management.
are you a member of a club stu ?

Yeah, I was. Just let membership expire. I play some days and shoot 78 gross on fair courses, then others 98 99 gross on ***** poor easy courses, i went round St Mellion in 89 which was a crackin round on there!!

It just drives (pun intended) me round the bend!!!

I've played off 11.9 (actual handicap is now 16 but I'm playing to 19 at best at the minute!!! Its crazy!

Stu the potential is obviously there. I think you have probably got into some bad habits. Have a couple of lessons to put you back on the right track.

its a shame you just let the membership lapse  :(  i hope you didnt have to front a hefty joining fee.
i have found parkland courses much easier than links and tend to shoot much lower scores on them providing they dont have any tree's
the course i joined is links and less than 5 minutes from my house so its an added bonus to be able to play 12 months of the year and it helps to keep it going over the winter.
nothing better than a good round of golf with a smoke up  :D

I had a few, its strange though as I can hit every shot, draw, fade, chip, low cut, high cut, can hit a driver a good 280... (recorded a 337 yarder down wind the other day) :D

And I'd say my putting is as good as most cat 2 players.

Problem is my bad shots can go anywhere. I can go right, left, straight... even friggin backwards :( My mates play with either a draw or slice, or hook. Mines unpredictable which means i can never accomadate for my bad ones by aiming left or right (for example) :(

starting to hate the game lol

Welcome Back Stu

As for golf it is certainly a very frustrating game

I started about 6 years ago after I had knee problems

Within the first 2 years I got down to around 16 but then I got a case of the lambs for a whole year and had a nightmare and nearly gave up as was highly fecked off but I changed my swing and watched loads of vids and spent a fair bit of time at the range and after 6 months it clicked and was hitting like a dream and since then it's just got better and better. I'm now playing of 5 and hopefully want to get further down but it's bloody hard. Luckily I have plenty of time to practise and have outstanding facilities nearby.

Golf is frustrating when you are playing bad but so satisfying when playing well - stick at and you will get there - especially when you are surrounded by some stunning courses.

I'm lucky that I'm a member at Woburn so if anyone is ever in the area then let me know and you can have a round on the course of your picking.

Am currently in Rainhill mate and we've got some good courses. Always used to see Shelv, Reina and Dirk Kuyt at Eccleston and Blundells. Play at Walton Hall in Warrington and Houghwood too and obviously we've got a few championship courses fairly close. The game is great when you're playing well. In the club champs this year I hit 113 on the first day gross. 81 the day after. Its not even a pressure thing as everytime some ***** watching I play a blinding shot lol!!!

When you shape your shot is it all through the body and swing or do you bring your hands into it ? I use a rounder swing with a gentle roll of the wrists and it gives me a consistent draw. Even moving the ball forward in the stance a little could . Have you seen a pro to have a lesson ? Might be worth the money as he could spot something really simple

They are certainly some cracking courses !!  Well worth sticking to the game to continue playing them
