Alcohol - In light of recent events....

I thought I’d start a topic on alcoholism.  To be fair, we've all been bombarded with media tosh about the 24 drinking laws, and how the country was going to screech to a drunk, spew filled, halt.  Obviously this hasn’t happened, but it has made me think about drinking and how much is too much?!?!

I’ve recently finished 4 years of University and, to say the least, I spent a considerable time in the bar.  Fair dues, I got my BA and MA degrees, but I did also see people who got so drunk, so often, that they failed or had to retake their studies.  But how much is too much?  I enjoy a drink during the weekend and once or twice during the week, have some tins in front of the telly, but now feel guilty because the media is making out everyone who goes to the pub is likely to be the next George Best!  (imagine that…waking up after a heavy night, only to find you’ve signed up to Manure for 4 years!)

My basic point is, has anyone else found this media paranoia intrusive because it seems to be the newest thing on the agenda of the PC brigade.  :veryangry

F*ck 'em.
If you like a drink and don't turn into a tw*t after supping a few, then carry on.

Boozing has been around for centuries, and the trouble some dickhead teenagers start on a Friday night after 2 babyshams and a malibu and coke is nothing compared to the carnage we'd witness if ale was ever banned.
Despite what the Labour pansies tell us, alcohol is a massive stress reliever, and helps folk have a fun evening without endangering others.

i went about 10 years without touching a drop of alcohol, didnt miss it at all. i now have an occassional drink since i moved to asia. i just decided to stop, also stopped drinking tea and coffee and anything with caffiene in it, i still dont drink tea or coffee or caffiene based drinks.

im not one for drinking in the house, its just a social thing for me and to be honest i much prefer the taste of orange to lager so i wont get any pleasure drinking cans alone at home. i could quite happily go the rest of my life without drinking if it was banned tomorrow

...except for the thousands of people who have a drink and turn violent, beat their wives around, go out looking for a fight with anyone and also the ones that will get in their cars and attempt to drive home :censored: thinking they're invinsible only to run some mother of 3 over and kill her.

Yeah, I'd say it wasn't endangering others.

think it through

Lee, in all honesty for those people if ti wasnt drink it would be something else. I can handle my drink but when i see some of the people coming out of pubs/clubs i dont know what to say. its sad that some people just cant handle it.

Everythiung has good and bad points. i love a drink but i know its something that can get out of hand. gotta find that happy medium

I love getting p!ssed but thats not to say i drink all the time, might have a pint in the pub through the week but dont drink in the house, not even when the match is on, cant see the point, i see it as a social thing, if me mates are round in ares on a friday night or something then we will get a crate or 2 in, I link drinking to socialising and never drink just for the hell of it or when im on me own.

And i dont see the point of people having 1 or 2 pints then fooking off, never understood it, if i was gonna go the pub for an hour id drink orange or Coke because 2 pints then youve got the taste and then you have the whole dilemma of going home knowing you want to stay out or staying out getting p!ssed and facing the Wrath of whomever!!!

I love just taking about drinking, its the best.

I can take it or leave it but like the occasional one and you need a blowout every now and again, I like the taste of it more than anything else.

I used to work in a pub for three years though and I've seen it wreak people's lives, they get caught up in the social element of it and forget what they're dealing with - it's addictive and will screw up your health, most people can handle it ok but :censored: happens and some people turn to the booze... It's not a nice way to go either.
