Don't know if anyone saw this, but it seems increasingly more common.

I've seen a number of cases in different countries where players have been dying due to undiagnosed heart defects - and it's not just in football.

Lucky for this guy he didn't die.

In the pitch I thought it was a sudden loss of blood pressure, because he recovered consciousness. But apparently his heart stopped once again in the dressroom.

Now he's stable, but the situation is not light.

All the best wishes for this promising player. Sometimes LFC2007 is not easy to spot some problems, despite the checks being thorough.

I know mate, heart defects are not easy to spot. At the very least though you'd expect the very best cardiologists to check over each player as part of their medical, especially at the top level of football.

An ECG usually gives an indication of any problems, players should have these at intervals throughout the season along with a few other tests IMO.

I had one a year or so ago as a checkup - it can affect anyone in any sport at any time.

There are cases of perfectly fit 20 year olds collapsing and dying for no apparent reason.

Victories for all the new boys. Valencia are in shreds.

Goodnight.

I hope Puerta recovers well, that looked really terrifying. Best of luck lad, hope to see you back on the field again soon, if the condition (or whatever was wrong with him) permits so.

Unfortunately his state is critic. I don't know to translate his illness, but it's a heart problem that can appear, in the second, third, or fourth decade of your life, and normally you get sudden death as a result.

Good luck for the lad.

Puerta just passed away.

He couldn't make it to recover from the damage of the 5 heart stops, one of them long enough to make brain damage. He's been worsening progresively.

Rest in peace. Shocked, didn't expect this, once he made it to the hospital.  :sniffle

My condolences to the Sevilla F.C. fans if there's any reading.

This is absolutely horrible news. Saw the game and it looked awful, but just as Sabre I was expecting it to get better, once he got to the hospital. A tragedy for football, Sevilla but most of all his family of course. RIP Antonio Puerta, and best of luck to his family in these hard times :(

Just reading an article written yesterday describing fellow team mate Fabiano's words about Puerta and this happening before to him.

The first time against Getafe the Spaniard dropped to the floor like a stone and the panic-stricken reactions of his team-mates was, in Luis Fabiano’s eyes, due to the fact that the player had fainted previously and his colleagues were aware of the danger.

In an interview with rádio Jovem Pan the Brazilian forward was understandably depressed by the events and sounded exasperated that the problem wasn't a bolt from the blue. "He’d already fainted twice before, although the others weren’t as serious as this one”, he began.

“He’d fainted like that once at half time at the end of last season. It was a friendly [Luis Fabiano didn’t specify the match] and it was really hot, but as he recovered later on we all put it down to the heat.”

"The other time was during training and he fell in exactly the same way he did on Saturday. But he walked away and we thought it was heat exhaustion again as it was boiling then as well", he added

The events on Saturday were, however, far-reaching as after an apparent recovery – the same as Luis Fabiano had described, the player collapsed and had to be taken to the Virgen del Rocio hospital by ambulance.

Of course we now know the tragic outcome since...

Rest In Peace, very sad for him and his family. Godd bye to a great player and (as everybody in his environment says) a great guy.

BTW, shame RFEF doesn't cancel all matches this weekend.:(

A thorough article of one of Spain's best cardiologists, said that there are not heart attacks that happen for no reason, and some of this reasons are very difficult to detect, some of which can only detected with a very specific TAC, called "multi slided" TAC or scanner.

He says aswell that's why symptons like faints shouldn't be ignored, as it can be more than a simple faint. I just hope it wasn't a case of not checking thoroughly, but so it seems.

It's tragic, it happens too much, seemingly healthy young men dying due to undetected heart problems. It is NOT just football, it happens in every sport that requires a high demand from your heart.

E.G. Athletics, Rugby, Rowing, Cycling.....and more.

RIP mate.
