PEPE REINA - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

If Barca offer anything close to the 10m pounds being rumored, we should snap their hand off. When is the last time you can remember Pepe Reina making a save that kept us in a game or made a crucial save that kept us in a game? Too often this season, we have conceded from the first shot on target (away at Sunderland, home vs. aston villa, home against arsenal) and this is down to poor goal keeping. I think Brad Jones' is probably not as athletic as Pepe, but his positioning is better and I think based on current form he should be in the side ahead of Pepe.

Barcelona need a keeper that is good enough. Barcelona need a keeper that is good with the feet. Barcelona needs an equal or better keeper than Valdes. And a list of keepers that fulfill all those requirements is short. We know that Barcelona paid a ridiculous sum for Ibrahimovic. Plus, Barcelona need desperately that keeper.

So offering 10M quid is a joke.

I don't know what's wrong with Pepe's performances, but I know a good keeper doesn't forget his job. He might be distracted, he might have lost the will to win things at Liverpool perhaps, but a good keeper doesn't forget to be a good keeper. And Liverpool can't sell a good keeper cheap.

i really hope that figure of £10 mil is somebody having a laugh.
i wouldnt think we could get a decent replacement either for 10 mil and selling him for less than a replacement costs would be ludicrous. he has a contract here till 2016 so we hold all the cards.
imo it would have to be a silly fee for us to even consider letting him go but knowing us we could save 40k a week on his wage so that in itself would be enough for fenway to let him go.

So now we're snapping hands for 10 mil for our first choice goalie? I agree with red and Sabre, 10 mil is a ridiculous fee. I think we could get at least 15 mil for him.

He's not worth £25M.

Would you be happy if we bought Reina now for £25M?

Are you people having a laugh?
2-3 years ago 20-25 million might had been the fee. Now, he hasn't been performing as well lately, not in a team doing well and 30+.
Adding all those things together 10 million sounds about right.

Always the same when some supporters value their own players. Agger is for example not worth 30 million. Accoring to the valuation of some we have the most expensive squad bar city.
No matter that we have finished midtable for several years.

I'm not really a fanboy of Reina as I prefer taller and more athletic keepers like Neuer, but he is one of the few quality keepers around. Spain's 2nd best goal keeper after Casillas is not worth as much as de Gea who Man United bought for 18-19 million? I think he is worth that much even with his form now. Previously we could probably ask for 25 million.

Barcelona arent going to need a keeper until 2014. That gives them plenty of time to find a replacement for Valdes. As far as Reina is concerned, I'm not sure about the interest Barcelona have in him but if they are, then 10mill would be closer to the figure they'd be willing to pay imo. Seems like a fair price with all things considered and I think what we would get for him (10mill or so) should be more than enough to bring in a capable replacement. Not too many keepers who would be interested in joining us would cost more than that anyways.

I think Barcelona will go for Courtois as first choice, but Reina will also be on their radar I'm sure.

I think reina needs a new challenge, his form has been very patchy for a couple of seasons and I think we should be looking at replacements this summer regardless of interest from Barcelona.

If he can recover his form and genuinely wants to stay then great but I can't see both happening. Been a great servant to LFC, whatever happens he'll always be a LFC legend.

He'd be a perfect moneyball purchase for another club at 10 million, all that exoerience and able to direct the back 4 etc.. Bargain at 10 million if thats what folks think he's worth.

you have got to be careful when you replace your keeper, especially when you are a high profile club like liverpool or united.
plenty of keepers who looked outstanding between the sticks for other clubs suddenly start to come apart at the seams when the eyes of the world are upon them.
whenever liverpool or united play a game they are watched by hundreds of millions if not billions of people worldwide, those types of figures start to play tricks on keepers minds, not to mention the fact if they make a mistake it will be plastered all over the back of the sunday papers the next morning and be a topic of conversation in factories, building sites and offices up and down the land on monday.
the likes of david james, chris kirkland and brad friedel were all highly rated before they arrived at anfield (and friedel and james did well once they left) but they couldnt handle the pressure here.
united have had the same problem over the years too, the likes of bosnich and bartez looked great before they signed but turned into a bag of nerves once they stepped through the doors at old trafford.
being a keeper at a big club is as much about character as it is about athletic ability.
reina`s form over the past 2 seasons has been sketchy but he does look more like his old self again and make no mistake he will be tough to replace if he does decide to leave.
just because someone looks good for swansea or birmingham means nothing, liverpool and united have never signed a poor keeper, they start to turn into poor keepers AT united and liverpool, not before.
i`d rather he stayed but those comments by his arl fella dont sound too promising.

I understand what you're saying about Keepers at LFC and that other club. But the scaremongering amongst it all, shouldn't put us off looking for a new keeper. We'll have to move on at some point and we may as well start that now, while Pepe is flirting with the idea of Barca or another club. His performances have been of underachievement over the last 2yrs and it's only sensible and logical that we begin to make inquiries into other keepers.
