Compared to this season YES they were.

I'm deliberately ignoring the piece of tin we picked up this season in a penalty shoot out against the mighty Cardiff as it's something that many people (apparently with even shorter memories ) would have dismissed as not worth p'issing in just a few seasons ago.

I doubt that the players who won it four times in the early 80s would agree with you.

You don't need unlimited funds to break into the top 4, Newcastle have proven that.

they aren't going to finish in the top 4.

i just heard one muppet say we as liverpool fans should be "envious" of what newcastle have done this season. they've done fantastically well but i wanna see what they do next season now to back it up. they've had one great season, everton did the same. villa did the same.

so you all have faith that this season was a blip for us and that Newcastle's season was a one-off. Do any of you have even a tiny bit of evidence or theory to back this up. From where I'm watching Newcastle are a much better team than us so I don't quite understand why that would suddenly change from one season to the next unless both teams radically change their squads/managers etc. BTW I think Newcastle will get 4th spot ahead of Spurs, I certainly hope so just to p1ss you guys off.

Are you running out friends and decided to make a few more by re-joining this forum ? A better idea might be to sign up to a Barcodes forum.

Patience with you Hiemdall is getting pretty thin.

You want Newcastle to get 4th to ***** who off exactly ?

Even if they do get 4th they won't last long there - they had a great run and the confidence was flowing for them but they don't have the depth to continue with it.

I'm also wondering why people dismiss a domestic trophy ? Also when they do mention it as a negative they only mention we beat Cardiff on penalties but fail to mention who we beat to get there in the first place.

I agree in fact we did beat some strong sides to reach the Carling Cup Final though we didn't really perform well enough on the day to beat Cardiff in normal time or extra time.

My feeling about saturday I'm afraid is that apart from the tactical errors made with team selection etc. the form of the last couple of months didn't help against Chelsea who have been right back on form since Di Matteo took over. We were almost as poor against Cardiff and Everton but got away with it because those teams aren't top sides. We were shown up against Chelsea.

You're wondering  "why people dismiss a domestic trophy ?"  ???  is that an attempt to insinuate that the league cup carries the same Kudos as the FA Cup or the Premiership trophies. I've never heard anyone dismiss a Premiership or FA cup trophy, I have however heard countless fans dismiss the importance of the League aka "Milk" cup, unless of course they've won it.

I have no problem with people who want to verbally polish our winning of a 4th tier trophy as some kind of major achievement, knocking out Man City along the way was certainly worth praise but lets face it in a world game we picked up a winners medal in the final of what can only be considered the most unimportant of all our regional contests, one that more than half of the football fans in this country couldn't be bothered to watch, hardly something that I personally mark as some kind of great accomplishment.

Your perspectives are different to that of other fans then. Bearing in mind that we weren't in Europe this season and clearly were not title contenders we therefore had the opportunity to win a domestic cup that would put a trophy on the sideboard to make us winners again so that it was something to build on.

Of course winning the league cup when we were always in the top four under Rafa would have been small beer but that's the difference when you've got higher sights in mind. This team was and is weaker than most of Rafa's teams and given the strength of the likes of City, Spurs and Chelsea it was always going to be tough to get back into the top four this season. Kenny is right to say that the cup competitions in this country should not be as devalued as they are by people.

I'd also say to you as an additional point that a number of Arsenal fans were pretty gutted when their team lost to Birmingham in the League Cup Final last year they would have given their right arm to win a piece of silverware.

The league cup carries as much kudos as you want - i have no way insinuate its as important as anything

We started the season where we had a chance to win three trophies - we won one , got to a final of another and was very disappointing in another

Now the season overall has been disappointing but with some silver lining including going to Wembley twice - winning our first trophy in 6 years and losing another final.

I dont give two flying shits if half the countries fans couldnt be bothered to watch it - the only fans that mattered or our own fans and the day at Wembley was fantastic and i loved every minute of it . You try dismissing the trophy as 4th rate to the fans who where there that day . You also try telling that to the players who picked up medals that day

Maybe that's part of the problem.

Do you see that flying over your head ?

That's the point you miss.

Who said anything about settling.

Liverpool was built on winning trophies - all trophies including "4th rate" cups

Before this season when did we last win a trophy ?

We will see if hes done a good enough job when he meets with John Henry to
review the campaign at the end of this season.

If he stays then he has and if not he wont be manager next year simple as that.

Personally I think he will be lucky to hold on now but if he does then fair enough
and we move on and try again next year with Dagger at the helm.
