Trabelsi's a right back and although that's where Alves plays for Sevilla, I thought it was understood we were buying him for further forward on the right.  In that case Trabelsi is no substitute for Alves.  Although Trabelsi's a good right back, I don't think he's got the skill to play right midfield to be honest, unlike Alves.

When I heard the Trabelsi rumour I assumed it was just Benitez playing mind games with Sevilla making them think we'd changed targets.  I get the impression Benitez is still set on getting Alves, although we can't afford to wait too much longer on him and leave things too late like last summer with Figo.  The difference this time though, is that the player is also set on coming to us.

May well be the case John , and although on the little I've seen he looks very good going forward hasn't he in fact spent the last 3 seasons as a right back ?

ps , thats not to suggest a player can't change his position , Carragher is evidence of that   :)

The last on Alves I read from Marca was, on July 5th.

Translated

Del Nido Stops Alves departure to Liverpool

José Maria del Nido is not willing to lower even a pound his economic demands regarding Dani Alves.

Last Tuesday, in the introduction of Duda to the press, he admitted that the contacts with Liverpool has been cooled a bit, and at the moment, the swop of the Brazilian wasn't going to be made. "The contacts we had for Alves, in which Sevilla put clear the conditions for the swop, were cut last week. So Right now, we have forgotten about this issue".

Despite this quote (says the journalist) the agreement is more than possible.

----

I agree the journalist, I see Del nido's tactics normal to get more money from Alves, but I think that the swop will be eventually made.

True woof, but considering we still need to bring in a forward and a right midfielder, we seemingly don't have a bottomless pit of funds and given that Finnan has performed excellently at right back for 2 seasons now, I just don't see the sense in Benitez spending close to 10 million for someone to be used at right back. ???

Take your point entirely , but who knows what game plan Rafa has up his sleeve   :D  . Perhaps Gerrard will continue at right mid ? Also consider that Finnan despite an outstanding season were he showed a willingness to push forward is now 30 and not getting any quicker .He could become more of a squad player than first choice if Rafa plays Alves as an overlapping right back.

New bid to bring Alves to Reds

Jul 7 2006

Liverpool Echo

DANIEL Alves is hoping his dream move to Liverpool can still come off - despite the Reds' interest cooling over the inflated fee being demanded by his Spanish club Seville.

The Reds have turned their sights to other targets after Seville refused to accept Liverpool's offer in the region of £8m and demanded a £12m fee.

Alves' agent is hoping Seville will adjust their position and allow his player the transfer he has set his heart upon. Agent Jose Rodriguez Baster says he is confident a deal can finally be reached "in the next few days."

Liverpool have had twobig offers rejected for the 23-year-old Brazilian full back wh can also play on the right of midfield.

Benitez has now switched his attention to Birmingham's Jermaine Pennant after running out of patience with the Spanish club.

Baster said: "It is true that there are difficulties with the deal.

"There is an economic difference between what Sevilla are demanding and what Liverpool are willing to pay," he said. "We need to try and reach a compromise and we will try to do this in the next few days. Liverpool is Daniel's first option."

While Alves is clinging to his dream of a move to Anfield, striker Djibril Cisse "already considers himself a Marseille player", claims the French club's chairman Pape Diouf.

"We arevery close to an agreement, and we think it will be a one-year loan deal," said Diouf.

"I still have a few details to discuss with Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry.

"Things can happen very quickly now. We will only announce Cisse's signing after the papers have been signed.

"But I talk to Djibril every day on the phone. For him he is already a Marseille player."

£4m of a difference is a hell of a lot of money. I can't see the gap being bridged.

Just hope this is not a ploy wherebye Cisse's contract winds down while he put out on loan and he eventually leaves on a free ,I have a feeling he wouldn't think twice about sticking it to Rafa , £14 million down the f'ucking drain

I was worrying about that too woof, as I thought he was on a 4 year deal and a year's loan would take him to the last year of his deal.  Think I've read recently he signed a 5 year deal initially.

Some say we shouldn't knock Gerard Foolier as he did many good things for the club but I can't help getting totally pi'ssed off when I consider the way he splashed our cash . Maybe I have short term memory loss but have we actually made any money from the "stars of the future" that Foolier signed. I'm convinced he at least did
