Reds reject Torres bid - report
Claims of £40million Chelsea off

Spanish reports claim that Liverpool have rejected a huge bid from Chelsea for Fernando Torres.

Radio Marca report that Roman Abramovich lodged a cheeky 50million euros (£40million) offer for Torres - who has shone on his debut season in England.

Liverpool are believed to have rejected the offer out of hand and did not discuss any possible deal as they have no intention whatsoever of selling the Spanish striker.

It is also claimed that Avram Grant tried to use his friendship with Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun to make it known to Torres, Chelsea's admiration.

However, Torres - who is readying himself to play a pivotal role for Spain at Euro 2008, is more than happy with life at Anfield and has no intentions of quitting less than 12 months into his Liverpool career.

Chelsea make Torres bid - why does Abramovich think he can sign anybody?

Reports are emanating from Spain that Chelsea have made an audacious £40million bid for Fernando Torres.

What gives them the right to think they can just flash the cash and get any player they want? What makes them think that the world's most talented players desire a move to a club with little history and even fewer morals?

Liverpool may not have ran alongside Chelsea in the title race this season, but then Torres would not necessarily have expected them to in his first campaign. He will also have seen from the Champions League semi finals - when Liverpool came within a goal of eliminating Avram Grant's side - that the gulf between the Reds and the Blues is not as wide as Chelsea fans would like to think. So why would a £40million transfer fee and a larger pay packet sway Torres to move South, away from fans who truly adore him?

It wouldn't. Liverpool have flatly rejected the approach and refused to even discuss the possibility of a Torres transfer - every player, it seems, does not have his price. But the fact that Chelsea even thought it worth their while to try is simply embarassing.
