Don't know much about VDV's other abilities, but is he a "stopper" like Masch ? If he has that feather in his bow, then I'd be infavour of cashing in on Masch and picking up VDV, but not just on the basis of the skills we all know he has. If he can play a midfield holding role and break up opposition forays into our half then yeah....otherwise, no. It's a lot for just that...

How many desperate saves did their keeper have to make? Most of our half chances were hurried snap shots from ricochets inside the box, and it says it all really that by far our most potent player in the build up was our right back. Then we conceded two goals. True it would be hard to pin the blame on the midfield for that, but they did slice us up on a couple of occasions, the fella Benitez got himself one on one with Reina not five minutes before they scored.
For me our passing and movement in the central area is too considered, not fizzy enough. There is insufficient appreciation of angle, little subtlety of direction, and for those who are screaming at the monitor "you mean like Alonso used to provide you c... when you never appreciated him!!!!!!", precisely. It will be interesting to see if Aquilani can go some way towards filling the hole, but our middle duo at the moment are absolutely nowhere near managing it. Like I say, you don't keep getting beat for no reason.
Well Aquilani to me looks like a player who should be further up the pitch and playing balls in for the strikers. The thing is, the only way I can think of getting him there is to drop Kuyt, and stick Gerrard there. The media would have a field day with him out there, but he's shown he be more than effective out there. We all know Kuyt won't be dropped though.

No he's not.
IF VDV comes, and we also have aquilani, that would mean to move Gerrard to the CM position once and for all.
Losing Masch would mean that we'd lose the only holding midfielder left in the team after Alonso going.
I would be very surprised if we signed him up.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez wants an amazing £14 million for Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva - and plans to keep him despite needing to sell players.
The Kop chief has been approached by a couple of top European sides who hoped to exploit the Anfield cash problems by landing Lucas in a bargain deal.
However, hard-line Benitez wants the stunning sum for the 22-year-old who splits opinions among Liverpool fans but is always solidly backed by his manager.
Benitez knows he must move out players in January to bring in cash to strengthen his squad - but his sky-high valuation suggests Lucas is not one of those he will sacrifice
Lucas has been a regular in the Liverpool side this season and even the arrival of Alberto Aquilani will not mean he is surplus to requirements.
The Brazilian will be watched by some of his admirers against England, but Benitez is steadfastly holding on to him.

to be honest I'd sell him if we got any offer over £10m.... but that's just me

I'd value him around £6m-£8m at the moment, certainly nowhere near £14m.

I expect Lucas to become one of them unsung heroes that never gets the plaudits of some ,but they are precisely the players that every team needs ,never missed until they actually leave the club .....
If Mascherano ups and leaves for pastures new in January, then Lucas will be more than a little relevant in our midfield and probably develop into the mainstay of our team as did Didi ,and these last two games I have seen have provided enough proof to draw the conclusion he will always give 100% to our cause
A little OTT to be fair
Hamman was class and a commanding, cool and influential player. If Lucas wants to be seen in the same light he must stop giving pathetic free kicks away like he did on Monday.
Not good

Certainly based on current quality and ability hes nowhere near that reported 14mill mark, and id say if we get 5mill or more we should sell him ... Been one of the main if not THE MAIN reason behind our sht start to the season before all the injuries took over as the main worry in the side....
For all the improvement hes still nowhere near good enough to play either Aquilani or Mascherano's role for us... best for all if we just sell him i guess..

Make no mistake about it Lucas could do reasonable well in a PL club with less demanding ambitions. The bitters for example! £14m is top heavy though. £13.5m would be nearer the mark.
