The lad was shocking today. He made Fellaini look a decent player (no mean feat) as the bitters controlled the derby from midfield for the first time in over a decade. Thank Christ they are atrocious in attack (and also MOM Pepe who was brilliant yet again). Masch work rate and tackling was superb.. he just needed a quality partner to give the ball to.

The introduction of Aquilani alongside Masch cannot come soon enough. In terms of both the CL and Premiership title we are out of both while Alonso's stop gap replacement lucas has filled in.... but hopefully Aquilani is genuine class, fully fit and ready to start, and can salvage our season in securing CL qualification and a good Cup run. Write this off as a transitional year post Xabi, then start again next season... offload the likes of  Voronin, Lucas and Babel, make one or two quality additions... and we will be ready for a title shot.

I still mantain that he's a good enough player. He's shown enough in the last few months for me to re-affirm that belief.

Having said that, the partnership with Mascherano doesn't work well simply because of the roles that they seem to be playing do not compliment each others gifts. I can only assume, that is down to the way they are ask to set-up in the team context. There are players out there who can fullfill many different roles but these players are not common but a rarity in today's game.

This is a phenomenon that we've seen quite a fair few times over the last few years. Players who do well before or after the leave the club but while they were with us, their performances have steadily declined until the inevitable happens and fans/the press/general public come to the conclusion that they aren't good enough when this is simply not true. Not all square pegs can fit into round holes.

Names like Morientes, Sissoko and Lucas fall into this category IMO. Possibly, also Babel and Kuyt.... we'll have to see when and if they leave LFC.

I'm a firm believer in 2 things. Either buy the players to fit in, into our prefferred system OR (if we're going to buy players based on their overall talent) modify the system to suit the strengths of the players you do have. Theres of course, nothing wrong with having faith in a system you prefer but if that's the approach we need to take the 1st approach mentioned above.

From the start of the season, I've mentioned and continue to believe that the best set-up we have with our current crop of players is to play Mascherano and Gerrard in midfield and unleash Yossi in the free role behind Torres. With Reira (when fit) out left and Kuyt on the right (no choice here).

If Torres is injured, move Dirk upfront and and play with a 3 men central midfield utilizing Insua/Aurelio and Glen Johnson as wingbacks. If Gerrard gets injured, get Lucas to TRY and do the role of the box-to-box midfielder..... Something that I feel is more to his natural game than what he's doing now. Whether he's being asked to do said role or he's not good enough to is pure conjecture. Only the coaching staff will know.... IMO, though, he's being asked to perform a role that he's ill suited to.

Lucas did what was needed in a derby - got stuck in their and made a nusiance of himself - tried to get involved going forward and was involved in some good work - decent performance in a combative game .

The lad can't win , it's obviously a different game in the flesh cos the amount of sh!t he's getting is ubfeckinbeievable . He had a crackin game yesterday .Was one of our best players. Breaking up there attacks ,starting our attacks , getting stuck in , sleek passing , always making himself available . Runs into the box , stone wall peno he should have had . Clearances in our box . Give the lad a break ffs.

Were you :censored: whilst watching the match? :D

Lucas and sleek passing should never be in the same sentence and Lucas and cracking game is just wrong so very very wrong.

Lucas is a slick passer when passing back to the defenders which is what he does most of the time, if he tries to pass forwards he either passes to the opposition or dithers so fecking long that he gets dispossesed, he is truly fecking useless, a complete waste of space, I cannot comprehend what you guys see in him.

On another note what the hell has happened to Kuyt, apart from his tap-in yesterday he was woefull back to his very worst, my patience with him is wearing very thin now.
