I think he will come good in time. He is already showing signs and he will go from strength to strength. It was a blessing in disguise for Masch not to play the other day too so maybe he needs to earn his place back in the side.

My guess is he'll do a decent job in pretty much every game he plays, provided you don't ask him to do something which he isn't capable of. Stick him in next to Gerrard and ask him to fetch and carry the water, and he'll do a decent job. Nothing more, nothing less.

Just to return to GYBS's post though briefly, he mentioned that Lucas does the same job as "Fletcher, Anderson and Mikel". He kind of does, but he isn't as good a player as any of those three in my opinion anyway, although he'd be closest in ability to Mikel.

He did a decent job though at being the holding midfielder against Burnley. It is worth remembering that this was the first match where he was actually asked to do that job, and he is fairly obviously best suited to this role. Like most other central midfielders in the Premiership though I guess, stick him alongside Gerrard and he looks fine.

Good post Bigmick.

For me Lucas has played better than Mascherano this season so far but because it's Lucas certain fans just can't give him any credit because he's no flashy blah blah blah, as if Mascherano is.

It makes no difference to me if his best performance this season so far was against Burnley because, if you may have forgotten, they did beat United and regardless of the fact that they have lost Ronaldo and Tevez there is no denying they are still very difficult to beat so we were not playing against a poor Burnley side.

As you said he just got on and did a good disciplined job, allowing our better, more attacking players to release forward and cause havoc. As I've said in the past, Gerrard and Lucas I have no problem with in central midfield. Gerrard and Mascherano just doesn't work.

Lucas really has taken over from  kuyt

The people that were saying the same negative stuff about kuyt - ie he is sh.it and not good enough for liverpool are saying the same things about lucas - same posts just a different name -will be good to watch lucas ram those words down peoples throats just like kuyt did

its an interesting piece and just shows how much of a conundrum lucas is. there can really be no escaping the fact that he has shown glimpses of being an excellent player. player of the year in brazil (yes, brazil), captain of his club as a teenager, sought after by man united and liverpool. all those people just can't be wrong.

the only sensible answer is that he really is an excellent player who just needs time to adapt to the premiership. he's not half taking his time though which makes me worry about whether he ever will or not. he is definitely improving but its not exactly leaps and bounds.

we can't just comfort ourselves with the thought that true class will always come to the fore either. the names morientes and veron have well and truly put paid to that idea.

Good solid performance tonight. Even mopped up a few sloppy passes from Stevie.

He will contiunue to put in decent performances I have no doubts at all. Now he's been mercifully (for him and us) relived of the primary ball distributor from central midfield duties, he can play more to his strengths and will do OK. Good luck to the lad.

My only hope is the fact that it took us three or four league matches to work out that this was always going to be the case doesn't ultimately cost us. Equally, such is the Gerrard factor that there's a good chance Torres will continue to look less potent without his buddy alongside him. Benayoun is doing well, but there's a World of difference. No matter though, until Aquilani is available, Gerrard must obviously stay where he is.

I think once Aquilani is fit Stevie will go back to his forward position.

So do I, provided of course Aquilani turns out to have a clue.
