accordin to people on other forums, andy townsend said on itv that gerrard shouldn't have to "babysit lucas". is that true as i haven't seen it?

if it is, that's bang out of order imo.

yeah those pundits  :bowdown   :no

after telling us for years that Rafa plays gerrard out of position and   he needs to be in the CM engine room , last night they criticised his selection in the middle because he can influence torres more further up the field.... ffs  :veryangry

Dunno if he said those exact words, but would you really trust the opinion of a bloke like Townsend ? Speaking as an Irishman, I'm grateful to the man for his contributions to the national team, but as far as placing any value on his opinions....nahhh, don't think so.

The principle though of Gerrard hanging around Lucas' part of the pitch did seem a bit accurate though on last night's evidence. I thought Gerrard was closer to Reina than Torres for much of the game. Maybe it'll take a few more games before (hopefully !) Lucas can put his mare of the past two seasons behind him and show evidence of why we bought him. He certainly seemed to, shall we say, do "less" wrong last night, and put himself about to good effect. If I were SG, I don't think I could help but want to help the guy out a bit, but hopefully he can show soon enough that he's big enough to stand on his own two feet and command the space he's playing in. At that point I'd imagine SG will just feck off and leave him to it....

Thing is you say to Gerrard hold back, and Lucas to get forward, but realistically who is going to be more of a threat - Lucas is a defensive midfielder, end of. He's not comfortable going past players or hitting it from 30 yards - don't think you'd even get Lucas arguing with that.

Gerrard time and again sets things up, and it didnt suprise me to see him have, by his standards, a poor game - he's been playing in such an advanced role recently, to go back into centre mid and be told to sort it out defensivley and also to be expected to join in with pretty much every attack, is not the easiest job ... personally I think it just shows how much we miss Xabi - and yeah there's no point harping on about that as he's gone, but it still remains the same.

A lot of times gerrard dropped too deep last night - there was no need really - he needed to be just in front of lucas and alongside yossi/kuyt supporting torres - when we did that last night lucas had lots of space and just played the ball into gerrard or yossi or kuyt or spread out wide and it looked for more comfy from everyone - when gerrard dropped deep things got a bit crowded and it meant kuyt dropped a bit deeper and it left torres a bit isolated at times .

Can I just say albeit being completely out of context, did you see the headbutt Lucas was on the receiving end of ,and just shrugged it of with the contempt of a man that had just used a dirty razor :D  He's a hard little B@stard

Lucas got stuck in and actually had one of his better games or was it just that everyone else played :censored:. I have no idea what Nando's problem is at the moment but it looks like he needs a rocket up his :censored:. Stevie is also off form and that yellow card he got was just dumb.

anyway glad to get the 3 points yesterday. my men of the match were probably Kuyt, Johnson and Lucas.

Lucas has generally upped his game this season. So long as he isn't given the job of trying to distribute the ball from deep he is fine.
My new blog for my upcoming holiday.

Strange how peoples opinions differ.
From where i was sitting last night, everyone around me were slating Lucas's performace...Many were laughing at how shockingly poor he was.
I took a mate to the game, who isnt a lfc fan, and had never watched Lucas before.
He was the most critical of him, so i value his opinion as there is no bias.

:O  but you stated yourself that everyone around you was slating Lucas..... "no bias"?

you've lost me...?

everyone around me was slating him. thats the 100 or so people in immediate earshot.

i stated that there is no bias in my mate's opinion. (and only my mates opinion)

point i was getting at...some lfc fans, as proven on here, will slate lucas no matter what, based on 2 years of being sh.i.t
some people, as proven on here, are blind to the fact he is s.hi.t, because he wears a lfc shirt.

my mate, never seen him play before, was shocked at how s.hi.t lucas was...there is no pre-conceved opinion there.  he thinks he is s.hi.t based  on last nights performance.

yet many on here are saying he had a good game....

if everyone around your mate is slating him, then i'd suggest that might bias his opinions a bit .... :p

it's all opinions though eh? thanks feck we're not in charge of picking the team  :rasp

Gotcha....

I guess you could be right...to a certain extent.

Personally, i'd keep playing him.  At least until AA arrives.
(thats Alberto A, not THE AA.  I don't think even they can fix some of Lucas's issues)
