Roma ace Alberto Aquilani has been told by the Italian club to prepare for life in the Premier League with Liverpool, according to Il Corriere Dello Sport.

The report suggests the Reds are expected to make a move for the Italian midfielder if Xabi Alonso joins Real Madrid. In light of those developments, the Giallorossi are ready to cash in on Aquilani in order to balance their books, and they have told him to prepare for a move.

Club directors have never completely ruled out the possibility of selling their man and the feeling at Trigoria is that the Rome-born midfielder will be sold for the right money. Any move is now hinging on Alonso and Real Madrid.

Reds coach Rafael Benitez has already claimed that Alonso will remain with the English team and it is suggested Real have slowed down their chase for the Spaniard. On Monday, Aquilani's agent, Franco Zavaglia, said there was nothing concrete in the recent press reports.

The player is currently recovering from ankle surgery and he is expected to return to action in August.

Chelsea & Man City enquire after Xabi Alonso

Chelsea and Manchester City have contacted the agent of Xabi Alonso enquiring after the player`s situation at Liverpool...

In the last 48 hours, Xabi has spoken publicly for the first time since returning for pre-season. The Liverpool midfielder  told Spanish newspaper AS that: “It`s always a great feeling when Madrid want you, especially considering the phase of the career I am in now...Madrid`s project is certainly impressive. But beyond that, I can`t tell you anything else.”

Xabi`s words have, understandably, been well received in Madrid, but the Spanish club continue to insist that they will not increase their last offer of €27 million for the Liverpool midfielder. Nevertheless, I suspect that, unless Madrid make another signing for the central midfield role, they may very well return with a higher offer following a few summer friendlies and it becomes increasingly apparent to Pellegrini that his side needs a player who possesses Alonso`s qualities providing control and stability in midfield.

Meanwhile, Liverpool remain unwilling to reduce their asking price and Rafa Benitez` public statements support that stance. However, as the player caught in the middle becomes increasingly frustrated and is pushed towards making a more public expression of his desire to leave, the likelihood that other clubs will start taking an interest grows.

As a consequence, Liverpool`s premiership rivals Chelsea and Manchester City have both made enquiries with Xabi`s agent, although at this moment in time, neither side appear willing to pay more than €30 million for the midfielder.

Xabi Alonso closes in on Real Madrid move

Xabi Alonso will take a step closer to joining Real Madrid today by missing Liverpool's latest pre-season match with what has been described as a “minor injury”.

The Spain midfield player is determined to join Real, who had a £24 million bid rejected last week, and has ruled himself out of Liverpool's match against a Thailand XI in Bangkok later today while the stalemate over the prospective move continues. Liverpool want about £32million for him.

Alonso and Masch mate. I'm sick of all these foreign players that come here and use clubs to springboard themselves to other teams. Well :censored: them, Xabi and Masch have a long way to go in their contracts so simply throwing their rattles out of their prams is not going to get them what they want.

They need to grow up the pair of them I am honestly sick of this situation and with their silence. They don't have the bollock.s to tell the fans straight what they really want, instead they talk through their fecking agents.
My new blog for my upcoming holiday.
