Dont judge a book by the cover, unless you cover just another, because blind exceptance is a sign,

can we not say depression can be cured by will power or by just cheering the feck up, OSD is another one that I suppose can be cured by will power, but it is still an illness.

I do not have an addictive personality so I can't talk from experience about how easy or hard it is to give something up, I think though it's not as easy as just saying you will stop if your body craves a substance, I imagine gambling releases endorphines which gives you the high when gambling, is this the rush you get from gambling or is it something else that causes the addiction?

No you cant say that because thats not how it works .

And if i am suffering from depression then i dont do stupid things like work on stuff that can cause harm but im now lucky enough to notice the signs and get them sorted nice and early.

Have i had a drink - yes i have but i know my limits and know the dangers and i dont get a thrill from it .

Have i had a bet - not in a bookies - yes done the lottery but im not addicted to it and dont get a rush from it .

Have i ever smoked - no not in a million years .

Have i ever taken drugs - No im not stupid enough to start .

I get my thrills from playing sport - i know it wont ruin my life if i get addicted to sport.

Im guessing the people that gamble start out wanting to get more money and then the thrill of the win bites them . and away they go .

Yes that is because there is this wierd concept called quick money or easy money. People try easier routes to get money. If there was such a thing called easy money then i dont think we would have had 80% of worlds population starving. Sad but true still people think they can gamble and make money easily

Ok so you say you know your limits, as do I, and I am sure the addicted person never set out to become an addict, it is just in their personality, if you had an addictive personality and become addicted to something that you thought you had  a limit for, would it be fair to tell you that I have no sympathy as you should have known better, It seems you are saying that if something can be addictive then anyone would be stupid to try it, but then saying you have done things that lead others to addiction, how do you know when you start that you will not become addicted?

I just think it is unfair to slate an addict who has become addicted to legal things, or things that will not damage your health. I agree about drugs, only a fool would get involved, but gambling is a regular occurrence for many people, some get addicted, some dont, and until that person gets addicted it would be fair to say he didnt know he would become and addict or plan to become an addict

But the warnings are out their there is always the risk of it - surely after a certain amount of times doing it he then must of realised he was addicted to it but did he stop or did he carry on ? he then had the choice of stopping and getting help or carrying on cause he was enjoying the buzz of it all ? im guessing he carried on cause he enjoyed the buzz so once again made the wrong choiceand it was his own doing .

If i become addicted to something that i know can be addicted then yes it is my own fault and i dont deserve sympathy but i know that gambling on the horses or football etc can become addictive so i decide not to take that risk to make sure 100% i dont become addcited to it in the first place . Better to be safe than sorry .

you make it sound too simple, nobody chooses to become an addict, the question is really how many times do you have to do something to become addictive, I suppose its possible after one time,

would you say you are addicted to this forum, you have many posts for just under one year

I think some people here aren't comparing like with like.

An addiction to gambling is very different than getting addicted to Heroin or even smoking. There are copious amounts of evidence out there to show EVERYBODY that trying heroin is a stupid, stupid decision that WILL wreck your life. Likewise, the same can be said for smoking these days too. People will still have a go and the results will be the same by and large. But, there are no excuses at the end of the day.

However, "having a flutter" is still presented as an acceptable pastime. Bookies line the street in every town in England and Ireland. The Irish government was even looking at bringing over Vegas style casinos at one point. Can you imagine? In Ireland? Bloody hell.

Anyway, my point is that there just isn't the stigma attached to gambling, as there is to taking hard drugs etc. So some people go into it completely unaware of it's potential addictive qualities. A friend of mine, his old man got addicted to the horses. An extremely intelligent, well read kind of chap. He had no real vices whatsoever. Liked a drink, but never got addicted to cigs or any other drug, found himself one day with a serious gambling debt on the g g's. He kicked it, over a very long period and always said, "I never saw it coming". He hated himself for it.

Personally, I would have more sympathy for someone with a gambling addiction than I would with somebody hooked on heroin. One is presented as an acceptable activity with it's inherent dangers masked to a large degree. The other is a mugs game, with absolutely no excuse for getting involved in.

Arguing with you is damaging to the quality of anybodies life, might as well argue with a brick wall, would probably get more sense, just kidding.  :D
