It's funny that these two lads have taken part of two great rivalries. Few rivalries can be equally passionate than the Liverpool-Manchester one, and these two lads were also archenemies in Argentina.

but they have also been teammates in huge rivalries

IAN RUSH: Liverpool need Carlos Tevez & Xabi Alonso for next season

May 26 2009  by Ian Rush, Liverpool Echo

THERE'S no doubt Liverpool need two or three new signings this summer to strengthen the squad.

I don't think anyone has made either of the positions on the left hand side their own.

We also need a different option up front as we've relied on Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard too much.

Ryan Babel and David Ngog haven't proved they are capable of producing the goods on a regular basis so Rafa Benitez needs to bring someone else in.

I would love to see Carlos Tevez at Anfield next season and I think he would fit in really well.

There is also talk of David Silva or David Villa being up for sale as Valencia have got financial problems.

Securing the services of any one of those three players would be a massive boost.

XABI ALONSO's future has been the subject of much speculation but I really hope he stays at Anfield.

I know the club is very close to his heart and he would be a big loss if he left.

I've heard some people suggest we might need to sell Alonso to raise cash for signings but that makes no sense.

If you are going to replace Alonso with a better player then you would have to spend a lot more money than Liverpool would be able to raise by selling him.

We might get £14m or £15m for him but who could we buy for that money who would do a better job?

Here’s to a five-star show

I'M off to Rome for tomorrow night's Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United.

I've been invited by UEFA and I'll be pulling on my boots for a special five-a-side match in the Fans Zone in the afternoon.

I'll be playing for the All Stars alongside the likes of Michael Laudrup, Ruud Gullit and Rudi Voller against an Italian team which includes Bruno Conti and Roberto Baggio.

I accepted the invitation a while back when I was hoping Liverpool would be in the final.

Things didn't work out quite as I hoped and it's fair to say I'm expecting a bit of stick from the United fans.

--------------

Personally I think he will end up staying at Utd. They will find the cash somehow knowing them.

Manchester United may pay asking price for Carlos Tevez

United have thus far been reluctant to pay such a huge sum for the Argentine, whose two-year £6m loan deal is set to expire.

However, with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City both strongly linked with the 25-year-old, who has shown he can handle the pace and rigours of the Premier League, United may bow to MSI's demands.

Kia Joorabchian, who heads the group of investors who own the striker's economic rights, is adamant whoever eventually signs Tevez will pay the designated fee.

Gill said: "It is clear we have an option. That is the deal we signed in 2007.

"If we wish to secure his rights and agree a personal contract with him, we have to pay a certain sum. That is £25.5m.

"It's a decision we are taking and assessing what we wish to do.

"Our honest opinion in the current economic climate is that it is a bit toppy but that is not to say that we won't pay that.

"Other clubs may be prepared to pay that so we have to understand we operate in a certain marketplace."

The mancs won't want him coming to Anfield, whatever happens it is £Xm of their budget on a player they already had use of last season, or they have to find a replacement which would come to a similar amount. Personally I don't know why they are dithering, they are a good side with him in their squad and they're willing to risk that over the fee?!?!?

If I was Tevez I'd be insulted and consider leaving if they aren't prepared to pay what he is worth

Could be an Alonso situation at the end of the day, also with the way his management agreement is written, salary is more important to Tevez than transfer fee.

I certainly can't speak for Rubbernose, but two things would make me dither over signing Tevez:

1. Tevez's own antics as the season drew to a close. No man has the divine right to insist a club sign him. No one player is bigger than the club, and Tevez's belief that he had a divine right to stay at the club, and that the Manc scum would automatically pay the ransom to secure his services is, I believe, flawed. I also believe this got right up yer man's Whiskey Nose, and probably influenced his actions in not coming out immediately and insisting Tevez was staying put (I could only speculate that the asking fee needed to be rubber-stamped first, but seeing as they seem to have money to burn, even in the current climate, that somehow seems unrealistic).

2. On the PLUS side, he is proven, both in the Premiership and at the club. He delivers goals, he has great skill, his workrate is second to none, and the fans adore him. This would make it a no-brainer to sign him straight away.

As an aside, there may be other (unlikely) reasons why they haven't declared officially one way or another what road they will take e.g. not wanting to see him go to another rival (dunno if there's a clause which gives them first option to buy, for example); whether a decision is to be made after the CL final; whether Tevez himself wants to consider options....

I think all of the above contribute to the current "impasse", but somehow, at the end of it all, I still believe he will stay put, and this whole speculation exercise will be just that !

Pity, 'cos I'd love to see him here. Though that's tempered by the decision on where to play him, and who will lose out as a result. 12 into 11 doesn't go...

I dont think we have ever really even been in for Tevez. I think all that talk from the player himself was designed just to push Utd into paying the asking price.

I'm not sure Tevez is insisting the mancs sign him, but they've won two league titles and a European Cup with him playing his part and set to contest another tonight. I think most people would think they had proved their worth and would want to stay at the club, wouldn't you?

To me it's not disimilar to Damon Hill being shafted in the 90s, won the F1 World Championship and then got booted out of his ride. OK Tevez hasn't single handedly won those trophies for the mancs, but they were one man's arrogance* away from reaching the FA Cup final and the chance to do the quadruple. Tevez was a big part of this season's success, that the mancs don't want him to join rivals is proof they value him and they've tied themselves up in ridiculous knots over his signing. It's not they don't want him, they of all people are quibbling over the fee.

I think you´re 100% right so why the BH are we being pushed into selling Xabi?

Dunno mate. My only guess is that Rafa has to wheel and deal this summer so he is probably thinking GB can come in and do the same job whilst the extra money can be put towards other positions. That is the only possible thing he can be thinking imo. I just hope should GB sign a new deal at Villa, that Xabi doesnt then ask to leave anyway.

I don't care what Gerrard thinks about Barry, i think Barry should stay at Villa.

Alonso must NOT be sold unless he is being replaced by somebody with better quality, now
call me thick but unless he is sold for 40+mil thats not gonna happen and even then it's a long shot.

No one knows what plans Rafa has for if he hypothetically sold Xabi. He isn't stupid so i'm sure it will not be a case of Xabi out, Barry in. It could well be Barry and an established striker in or Silva and another striker in. Plus we need a new RB of course.

Heinze was not the player he use to be when rafa tried to sign him, but still the red nose was doing everything in his power to stop the transfer. It's not about the value the player or not...it's just the never to Liverpool.

As for Tevez, it's not about the fee also. The red nose old fart style in signing players he wanted....do it quickly before anybody else does. He waited and waited with 30 mil for Berbatov, he was persistent on manucho (like other club want to sign that c.rappy player). but he did nothing for Tevez? at least a plan? why in the 11th hour ?

Assuming he could fit into Rafa's system, I'd say the team would have a more ferocious cutting edge to it which might prove to be the final piece in the jigsaw.

ok saw tevez late subs against barca, couldnt drag mancs back from the dead, but still better than berva. this may be tevez last game for the mancs, which i hope so.
coz he does bring an extra dimension to their game with his tenacity. he may may just fit in with our mentality if we can afford him.
