I can understand where emerald and dundalk come from - my mum is irish and she hates being called a paddy - I guess to non irish people you cant understand why someone would find it offensive but in the world these days you have to realise that some people will find things offensive and you have to take everyones view into consideration . I guess if emerald or dundalk or any irish person was constantly called paddy then it would get on their nerves and become offensive to them and people have to understand that no matter how silly you think they are - One persons joke is another persons insult.

Quick question, is it Ok to call Taff, "Taff" since he actually has it as his name  ??? Because "Taff" as far as I'm aware is a geographic group nickname, ie those who come from Wales are sometimes called "Taffs". Just checking, and while we're at it can we clear up "scouser", "cockney", "Manc" (that must be OK surely, it's onamatapeic (well it isn't but you get my drift). Geordie and the like must be Ok, Brummie and all them? It's a bit confusing sometimes particularly when these little sub groups call themselves by these names, and use it in generic terms themselves but others aren't allowed to go there. A good example of that is n!gger, not that I am complaining about not being able to use it, it's a horrible word. A bit like c..., or crevice, that's a dirty word  :D, security on the other hand isn't.

Its all down to how that person feels mate and if he finds it offensive or not - if you call a welsh person a taff or etc etc then if that person says i dont want to be called that cause i find it offensive then you have to respect his wishes .

Thanks Mick for that.

I'm a Cockney, well a Southerner, and dont get offended when we play Chelsea and everyone and their Mother shouts off 'Lets beat these Cockney K.unts'

Unfortunatly these days we have to be more tolerant of othe rpeople and thier views - it the way of the world now - FFS we arent even allowed to shout too loudly in peoples faces in the military now when they go through training in case they say your bullying them ??

There seems to be a few people getting a bit upset about the use of "paddy" in Bams post and while personally, I couldn't give a toss about being called a "paddy" or a "mick", I can understand some may feel miffed about it. Also, if you're going too use such terms, it's a bit silly to think that the possibility of offence to at least some people doesn't exist. Of course, the person's ethicity is also part of the equasion. For example, if we change Bams sentence to the ones below, would they have been said?

"Its typically bias to see all the Yid's flooding the boards, jumping on the 'Bennayoun was treated unfairy' and 'Good enough for LFC' bandwagon."

or

"Its typically bias to see all the Wog's flooding the boards, jumping on the 'Babel was treated unfairy' and 'Good enough for LFC' bandwagon."

The answer is no, obviously.

In saying that, I believe that most "Offence" is actually used as a weapon to gain the moral high ground on something. But Bam's original post was said with a certain amount of spite, if not anger and it's in those moments that we should all check the words we use carefully.

I think John Barnes had the right idea, when asked if he preferred to be called black or coloured, he said "I prefer John".
