Benitez keen to splash the cash
Liverpool fans could be welcoming their new Kop heroes sooner than later if boss Rafa Benitez has his way.

Time is of the essence to Benitez, who has revealed the Reds are trying to sign new players this month, and not wait until later in the summer.

Co-owner Tom Hicks has agreed to a summer spending spree of more than £30million, and Benitez has given chief executive Rick Parry a list of top targets.

The Reds have already been linked to Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry and Wigan's Antonio Valencia.

And any new faces will be coming quickly, hopes Benitez.

He told the Daily Star Sunday: "We will not be waiting until August to sign players. I think we will do things well before. Perhaps you will see some evidence in a few weeks.

"It will help me if the signings of new players are done early. It needs to be as soon as possible really, because then you know the situation and you can control the pre-season.

"Rick knows the necessity of early deals. Our conservation the other day was very positive.

"We are trying to fix the targets and progress. He knows that we want to sign the players right now.

"We aren't working on signing new players in June or July - but to sign them in May if that is possible."

After a trophyless season this term, Benitez is determined to return to winning ways.

He said: "We want to win the next two games and we want to win silverware next season.

"We have Pepe Reina, who can be the best keeper for another year, with more clean sheets than anyone if he has one more.

"We have scored 116 goals. We want to be the best team in England - and people talk about us being defensive!"

Wales on Sunday has revealed that Liverpool’s £3m bid for Cardiff’s Aaron Ramsey has been rejected, with Cardiff reportedly looking for at least £5m.

Ramsey has only recently burst into the first-team fray for Cardiff, impressing with some sensational performances to lead Cardiff into the FA Cup final.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has made no secret of his admiration for the teenage Welshman, publicizing his interest to sign him. However, he might just have met a stumbling block with our owners allegedly unwilling to release the funds to Rafa.

He will have to act fast, with Newcastle and Manchester United among an array of clubs waiting to pounce should the deal fall through. Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly willing to fork out £10m for the talented youngster.

Benitez is trying to attract the youngster by including a clause in the contract that ensures Ramsey that he will secure 10 first team appearances in his first season at the club.

Among his defining traits are versatility, passing ability and a deadly eye for goal. At just £5m and with a bright future ahead of him, I think Benitez should invest in the playmaker, dubbed “the new Gerrard”.

Liverpool Bid For Cardiff City Star - Rejected!

The first of theis summer's much anticapted bids for hot property Aaron Ramsey is in, Liverpool made it but Cardiff City have rejected the offer.

Aaron Ramsey is in demand from all of the 'big four' Premiership clubs with Manchester United showing very strong interest.

Liverpool decided to jump in with the first firm offer, tabling a cheeky £3m bid for a player expected to fetch around double that value.

Juve line up £12 million Liverpool ace

Juventus are planning a £12 million summer bid for Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso. (Daily Telegraph)

Alonso has been linked with several exits from Anfield in recent months after he lost his place in Rafa Benitez' side to Javier Mascherano.

Juve spent £8 million on former Liverpool midfielder Momo Sissoko during last January's transfer window. The Serie A giants are believed to be very keen on bringing the 26-year old Spaniard to the Delle Alpi.

I don't really know what to make of Alonso's season this year. The last few seasons since joining Liverpool he was a key part of the team however in recent months he has played a slightly lesser part. £12 million for Alonso, may be good value for money.

I thought that when I wrote it. Some on here seem to be dreaming of £25million. If we get £25million for Alonso, Rick Parry deserves a knighthood not the sack

Dude, chill out! Have you ever considered that this is just the smokescreen, so other clubs don't rip us off. After buying Torres last yr, everyone will be expecting us to spend ridiculous amount of cash on players like Real and Man U do. I really don't think we are poor, this is just the way our club is choosing to conduct it's business.

LIVERPOOL have checked on Barcelona left-back Eric Abidal as Rafael Benitez steps up his summer transfer plans.

Representatives from Anfield were in attendance to watch the France international left-back play in Barca’s 6-0 La Liga thrashing of Valencia on Sunday.

Abidal was also assessed during both legs of his team’s Champions League semi-final against Manchester United last month.

Liverpool would have to spend big to prise the 28-year-old away from the Nou Camp, the player having only joined Barcelona from Lyon for £10million last summer.

But with John Arne Riise poised to depart – Newcastle United are among the interested clubs – and Fabio Aurelio injury-prone, left-back is one area Benitez is keen to strengthen.

The Spaniard has already put one transfer in place for the other side of defence, with Switzerland international right-back Philipp Degen poised to arrive on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund.

Meanwhile, Benitez is confident Fernando Torres will avoid suffering a bout of second-season syndrome.

The striker netted the 32nd goal of a fantastic debut campaign at Anfield with the winner on Sunday in Liverpool’s final home game of the season against Manchester City.

Torres, runner-up in the PFA and Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year polls last week, has now equalled the 23-goal record of Ruud van Nistelrooy – the highest number by a foreigner in his first season in the Premier League.

And while Benitez expects life to be tougher for Torres next season, he believes he has the character to cope with the extra attention he will receive from defenders.

“Fernando has been amazing, and he has reached that total without any penalties,” said the Liverpool manager.

“Clearly it will be more difficult for Torres next season, defenders will have watched him and will work on stopping him.

“But he can improve even from this. He has a strong mentality and he can cope with what defenders do.

“It will not be easy to score this many goals again, obviously it will be more difficult for him.

“But if he scores a good number of goals and his team-mates, five of whom have scored 10 or more this season, also improve and increase their number of goals, it will be okay for us.”

Torres has netted 21 league goals at Anfield this season, a total bettered by only four players in the top flight in the club’s history – Ian Rush with 23 in 1983-84, Robbie Fowler’s 22 (1995-96) while Sam Raybould (1902-03) and Gordon Hodgson (1930-31) both scored 21.

Overall, Liverpool have scored 79 goals in all competitions at Anfield this term, the club’s second-highest total following the 87 they scored in 1985-86.

Benitez has also revealed that Liverpool will again begin pre-season with a training camp in Switzerland, where they will play a couple of friendlies.

With the debate raging as to who Reds boss Rafa Benitez is lining up to bring to Anfield during the summer, one player who seemingly won't be arriving is Czech Republic international defender Tomas Ujfalusi.

With the Reds boss allegedly on the look out for a new right-back, Ujfalusi's name along with the those of Schalke's Rafinha and Dortmund's Phillip Degen have been mentioned as possible targets.

But, the Fiorentina player once courted by Benitez, has reiterated that he won't be making the trip to Merseyside this summer or to any other English club for that matter. Having turned down the opportunity of regular Champions League football in January, leaving the Spaniard to bring in the impressive Slovakian Martin Skrtel, Ujfalusi revealed to CTK that he has no intention of going back on his decision.

"Two weeks left and then we have to make a decision. Of course, I am more or less decided, there are some signals but I will announce it when it is certain."

"As for England, I have decided against it. I think that it will turn out that I will either stay at Fiorentina or I will move to Spain.

"In Italy there is only Fiorentina for me.

"There are a lot of reasons why to stay or leave. Florence is currently my home.

"I have been here four years and have a lot of friends. It is one of the reasons to stay with Fiorentina. The team is well composed, the coach believes in me and relies on me."
