I'm a little surprised that a few people are making something of a stink about Sami not starting. I think the aim was to have Carragher contain Drogba like he did last year at Anfield--a task that he carried out masterfully. Along side him, Skrtel was available to mop up and his pace was always going to be an important element. Sure, Arbeloa had a few dicey moments when he got sucked toward the ball and allowed Chelsea in behind (and for letting Kalou get that cross in) but I think that putting Carra at RB would have given Drogba a lot more chance to hurt us.

At the other end of the pitch I think Stevie was a little quiet because he had Makalele haunting his steps wherever he went on the pitch. Even when Stevie was standing near the corner flag the little fella was right there with him.

Look, it is 1-1. Simple. We need to drop all of this psychological nonsense about how it is so much harder at Stamford Bridge. That is really what it all comes down to, is psychological and then the team playing in a conservative cautious manner, only giving themselves 2-3 chances in a game and therefore not scoring. We need to leave everything behind and go out and play a great game and forget about everything else. A football pitch is a football pitch, simple as that and if they cannot win it at Stamford Bridge then they do not deserve to head to Moscow.

Very disappointed at the tie. The game was ours and we deserved the win. I guess this is how Arsenal fans feel?

Either way, Riise needs to make a statement as to what he was thinking. Nothing in my football career (although I must admit, I'm no where near as good as him) would tell me to get on the ground and head it. Absolute disgrace to a home victory.

However, lets not forget that Stamford bridge was where we discovered our form, and in that 0-0 draw we outplayed them. That then sparked a marvelous winning streak with amazing form, and now with Terry having a yellow I think Torres gets some more room to breathe, and a head with fewer knocks.

A 0-0 draw won't do it this time, we need to come out hungry to win. Although I predicted to myself a 1-1, and I knew we would have to score away. Only problem is I didn't want to have us to score an away goal just to cover an own goal. I'm seeing the Man U vs Chelsea game as a huge advantage in our favor, and I think Torres should get some well needed rest.

This match has reminded me of why I hate Chelsea so much. I thought that it was Mourinho who had made Chelsea such a disgraceful club, but now I know that it is the club itself that is a disgrace and everyone who is associated with them, turn into a bunch of shameful :censored:

. I actually hope that Manchester win the title at the Bridge on Saturday, because they certainly deserve it more than these mafia :censored:

terrible. in all honesty, considering the lack of goals in matches against them, what are our chances of scoring at SB? sure, we didnt have torres back then but we did have him today. all we can do is hope, but saying that we are gonna beat them again is abit too optimistic for me. i wont be surprised to see em hold out for a 0-0 draw. chelsea have the upper hand now. very disappointed but like i said, we can only hope.

Unbelievable and ironic that Riise would not have been on only for Aurelios injury.Saying that i still dont blame Riise it was bad luck and thats that.some may call for his head but in reality it could have been anyone!Thank god it was'nt Kuyt,ffs he gets enough abuse!

I think we were well worth the win that we deserved.And more to the point so do Chelsea,see the hugs at the end.Terry thought it was Xmas time.

i rather be negative now and end up surprised rather then be all positive and having some rose tinted glasses on and be shattered in the end. its gonna take very hard work to get to the final now and the odds are all stacked against us. i backed riise to score in this match earlier but i didnt think it would be an own goal. sigh.

A defiant Steven Gerrard has backed Fernando Torres to break Liverpool's goalless record at Stamford Bridge to secure a place in Moscow.
A last-gasp OG from John Arne Riise gave Chelsea a crucial away goal as the first leg ended 1-1, meaning the Reds are going to have to do something they have never done at the Bridge under Rafa Benitez – score.

Asked by Liverpoolfc.tv about that record, Gerrard replied bluntly: "We haven't played there with Fernando Torres, have we?"

Torres, who was absent from both of Liverpool's trips to Chelsea this season, missed a golden opportunity to open the scores when he went one-on-one with Petr Cech in the first half.

It was Dirk Kuyt who eventually fired home, though a thoroughly deserved victory was denied by an enormous stroke of bad luck for Riise with 30 seconds of injury time remaining.

Gerrard admits it's his job to now pick up his teammates ahead of the return leg next Wednesday.

He said: "Obviously we're disappointed with the late goal but it's done. We've got to pick ourselves up. We've got to get a result at the weekend then give it everything we can at Stamford Bridge. We know this tie is not over.

"It's my job as captain to pick the boys up and make sure we're ready for next week.

"Let people say Chelsea are favourites, let them. We've got to block that out and do what we've got to do. We are confident we can beat Chelsea on their patch.

"We've created the better chances against them here. I don't think Pepe had anything to do besides pick the ball out late doors. Petr Cech has had to pull off two or three great saves. To be honest, we'd have been disappointed if this game had ended 1-0 when it could have been 2-0."

Kuyt has now scored in every round of this season's Champions League – a remarkable stat considering the stick dished out to the Dutchman in some sections of the press earlier in the season.

The skipper added: "I haven't heard him get any stick. We don't listen to any of that (the media). Dirk has been fantastic for us, he's worked his socks off for us again tonight and deserved his goal. He is well respected in the dressing room."

Gerrard also had comforting words for substitute Riise, putting the last-minute equaliser down to misfortune.

He said: "These ties are decided on small details and Chelsea have had a bit of luck here at the end, but maybe we'll get that luck at Stamford Bridge. This team wins, loses and draws together.

"It's the second leg of the European Cup semi-final – if you can't motivate yourself for that you shouldn't be playing football."

Good to see Gerrard being positive. I hope that he gets the team fired up for Wednesday.
