Like Drogba, who's to say Schevchenko can't have a fantastic second season? Drogba's first season hardly paid off did it?

well, yes it did pay off...he was awesome, tho not prolific.

Why arent you sugessting then that bellamy or Kuyt will be prolific next year, and we shouldnt bother signing anyone.

Mourinho didnt want sheva, and if he has his way he'll be off.

I cant see too many people on here being patient if we spend 30 mill and it doesnt work out 1st year

nowhere s bad as some are suggesting.... a great signing and doesnt get much bigger than this if you ask me...
etoo, villa, tevez, and owen are all better strikers and better overall players but Forlan, Bent, Huntelaar and Milito... give me a break !

for 17mill hes a bargain imo ! he is a brillant player with great skills and is miles ahead of anything we have atm ! slag him all you want but iv seen much of him and to me, hes a great striker ! his scoring record is average to say the least and doesnt reflect his abilities...hes the kind of player you'd see performing and expect to see score week in week out...

to me, hes capable of scoring 20+ goals a season for us....

Would be dissapointed if Garcia leaves but if that is what it takes to get torres....then be it !

sign him up and lets start looking for a decent left winger !

Torres is far too overated, i'd prefer Forlan & Owen for the same money & keep little Luis.

Yes Torres playes for a poor team but i don't tink he's cut it over here in the prem'

I don't understand all the moaning about Torres ? We all wanted a big name signing,  we all cringed when the likes of Bent or Forlan were mentioned but now maybe we have the chance to sign a great player some of us are against it             ?

If it takes Garcia + cash to land him so be it, Garcia was never my favourite player anyway and disapeared a lot when the games got physical, for me if it happens its a sign of our intent for next season.

I like Torres, he always looks a classy player when I watch him.  Reasonably quick and strong with a good shot on him and great first touch.  But the stats don't lie.  He's not going to score a shedload of goals for us if he signs.

Granted he's the captain of his club at 23 and that may put extra pressure on him at that age, detracting from his game rather than enhancing it.  Also the side he plays in is a mid table side and he isn't exactly surrounded by quality.  Despite that he's scoring about 10-15 goals a season roughly?

The question is if he played for us would his goal tally be more or less.  You have to assume he'd take time to settle.  It's a different style of league and he'll get roughed up etc, etc.  On the flipside he'll be surrounded by better players who'll likely supply more chances for him.  Then again will he get as many minutes on the pitch as he does in Athletico?  Doubtful, knowing Benitez even a big name signing will get rotated and that will also detract from his goals tally.

All-in-all I wouldn't predict Torres would score any more than 12-15 a season if he signed for us.

I would definitely prefer him to Darren Bent, but then again I'd have Tevez ahead of Torres.  It would also mean admitting that signing Eto'o was beyond us, because there's no way Benitez would be given cash for both.

Bottom line though, do I think there's anything in this?  Probably not.  I saw an interview with Torres a few months back - I think on trans-world sport or eurosport or something - in which he said he was very happy at Athletico, how he was very proud to be captain of his hometown club and how he didn't think he would ever leave.  I doubt he's changed his mind already.

On a final note, I wouldn't get rid of Garcia barring an absolutely ludicrous offer.  I wouldn't trade Garcia plus 25 million euros for Torres in a million years.

Cant believe some people have this player judged already..FFs he has not even signed never mind pulled on the shirt or kicked a ball for us.

Already he has been called over rated and not good enough.
Has history taught us nothing.?

Look at Cisse?Prolific in France, top scorer 2 seasons on the trot.Came to LFC and was useless and no where near worth his price tag.

Morientes was great at every club he played at practically.Came to LFC and just could not fit in.He looked a shadow of his former self and was sadly a waste of time.

A few above have mentioned Forlan! Remember him at Man UTD?
He could not fit in and was sent packing because he was not good enough..look at him now at another club in another country with a different system.

What i am trying to say is that just because Torres is not exactly prolific in Spain does not mean he will not score bagfuls of goals for LFC (IF HE SIGNS).
A players performance at their current club before moving to another is only a mere guide to what they will do when they move on to pastures new.
Theres no doubt Torres is a quality player but it remains to be seen if he will be the out and out goalscorer we want and need.
Every new signing in a way is a gamble. All we can do is support the lad if he comes to us and hope for the best!
Saying he is not what we need now at this early stage is pointless and ignorant to history!

Torres has 75 goals in 173 league games over the last  few seasons. This isn't a terrible record and he's only 23. Also his performances usually lift the whole Atletico team and create goals.
For such a big fee though it could be a bit of a gamble, but unlike a lot of players he seems to have more of the attributes you'd expect for someone to make a successful transition from la liga to the premiership. He could be better off here than there actually.

If we get Torres for £17m I think its a fair price.

It seems the player is keen to play for Liverpool and that goes a long way.

He will be part of a better team and fired up to make a big impression in the Premiership.

If Utd can pay £20m for a holding midfilder in Hargreaves who is older than Torres then it would be a decent deal for a striker.

Every player you bring in is a risk and no one ever knows for sure if they will play well in your team but I reckon that at £17m in todays market that Torres is not high risk and worth going for.

Perhaps the fact we are now looking to spend decent money means we are more nervous but this kind of fee has been the norm amongst our rivals and much higher than that.

What he said!!!
Certainly don't let Garcia go anywhere and certainly don't pay more than £20mill for Torres but I think he's worth a punt.
Every striker is a risk and others need time to settle, not every top striker can score straight off the bat like Benni Mcarthy did for the Rovers. Next season Kuyt might knock in 25, Bellamy might stay and hit form or Torres could come and bag a hatfull....noone knows.
I wouldn't be unhappy if we signed Torres for the right price and would give him a chance like I would anyone who signed for us.

Hes a scorer of great goals but hes NOT a great goal scorer.

Defintley not a 20 goal a season player. Hes only a bit better than Kuyt i reckon.

forget about 17 millon for torres...

there is no chance to land him for that...

he will cost in excess of 25 million...

we will have to move quick to beat off other teams to land him   :)

Alrite lads,i tink Torres would be a dream signing, hes young, hes still no where near hes peak+hes got pase, something we badly need up front.Hes just gone that bit stale at Ath.Madrid.New challange would do him the world of good.Id pay big bucks for him, think he'd be worth every penny.
