Did anyone see the program last night on C4? Interesting statistics considering everyone is under the impression that our city is one of the worst places to be. Here was the top ten worst....

1 Hackney
High crime, bad education - our worst place to live.

2 Tower Hamlets
The second most deprived borough in the UK.

3 Merthyr Tydfil
Slowly improving since the steel industry died.

4 Newham
New hope has come in the form of the Olympics.

5 Islington
Super rich lies next to super poor.

6 Middlesbrough
The city's dilapidated old housing lies empty.

7 Nottingham
Crime is down but it's still burglary capital of Britain.

8 Strabane
The troubles still go on, but things are improving.

9 Blaenau Gwent

10 Manchester
Lots of investment but still not a nice place to live.

Here is the low down on Manchester...

Since the 1996 bombing, Manchester has attracted £500 million of investment and undergone a major redesign and extension of the city centre, and for the Commonwealth Games, held in the city in 2002, it attracted £2 billion of private sector investment and now offers world-class venues such as the International Convention Centre, Bridgewater Hall and the MEN arena.

Despite all that, Manchester harbours many social problems, hence its appearance on our list; so many that in recent years more people have moved out of Manchester than anywhere else in the country.

Best at

Manchester ranks in our top ten for access to art galleries, museums, hotels and retail facilities.

Worst at

Ranks third worst in the country for crime: 9% of the population are likely to have been a victim of crime. For individual offences it ranks fourth worst for robbery, second worst for burglary and third worse for car theft.
Ranks amongst the worst 5% in the country for education, with 43.7% of students achieving five or more GCSEs at A* - C*.
Ranks amongst the worst 5% in the country for levels of carbon emissions.
Ranks amongst the worst 10% for economic activity.
Manchester has the worst life expectancy in England for men at 72.3 years, and the second lowest in England for women at 77.9 years. The average life expectancy for Manchester is the sixth worst in the UK.
It is estimated that 24.6% of adults binge drink, a much higher figure than the national average.
Deaths from heart disease, stroke, smoking and cancer are the second highest in England, and there is a high rate of teenage pregnancies.

In your Liverpool slums my a**e

It doesnt suprise me to see three of Londons boroughs in the top five, I used to work in Lewisham, Leyton stone, Tottenham and Erith. And to me those places were all s.hit holes, known as the armpits and @rseholes of London respectively. I never had the pleasure of working in Tower Hamlets but I know Hackneys a dive, but they must be bad to of topped the lot I worked in.  :O

I also remember last year, Luton was voted the grimist town in England, and I can also vouch for that its a propper hovel in places.
I was working in an estate called Hockwell ring, in a tower block installing central heating as a contractor for the council. And f.uck me dead, I'd be standing outside the block in the morning waiting to gain access to this block stairing at all the syringes lying around the bins, when  dirty nappie's from thirteen stories up had been lobbed out of the window, missing me by yards. On another morning we had Pigeons falling out the sky, the guy who lived on the very top flow used to shoot em out of the sky, and again they'd only fall yards away. While we were working there, the council had some other company in fixing the lifts, (basicly renovating the carcass of the building. Anyway these guys had removed the old lifts and installing new ones, and this particular day they were working in the basement of the lift shaft. When a few of the local kids thought it would be funny from nine stories up, to prize open the doors and pi$$ over the blokes working at the bottom. Personally I found it quite funny but just as disgusting, the blokes left site immediately and the work was haulted for a few days. I dont know what happened to them as I was more concerned in watching my own back around there, but Apparently that was the half decent part of the estate so f.ucknows what thew rest was like!!

Merthyr Tydfil has had a battering and has a huge estate which is like a war zone although to be honest its not that different from the rest of the valleys, Blaenau Gwent is probably the roughest of the South Wales Valleys but only just but I put its inclusion down to Goldie Lookin Chain  :D

Islington surprises me, I know it had a reputation years ago but you can happily sip a latte there reading the Guardian and fit right in.

i live near erith and go to school near lewisham. Erith is a bad place to live but lewisham is only a bad place to live because of its surrounding areas i.e deptford peckham. Dirty places to live.
