The squad is already full of left sided midfield. If next season, none of them are able to play on the right side, I forsee Gerrard is going to occupy that role again~   ???

Pennant ready to join Liverpool for £6m

Dominic Fifield and Stuart James
Wednesday July 26, 2006
The Guardian

Liverpool will complete the signing of the Birmingham City winger Jermaine Pennant today after an improved bid worth about £6m for the player proved more acceptable to the Championship club's board.
The former England Under-21 midfielder was due at Melwood for a medical last night and, provided the tests show up no problems, will complete negotiations over personal terms today before travelling to Switzerland to join his new team-mates for their pre-season training camp and tour. A proportion of the fee is expected to be linked to appearances and Pennant could make his debut in Saturday's friendly against Kaiserslautern in Liechtenstein.

The signing ends a torturous pursuit of a right-sided midfielder by Rafael Benítez, who has been attempting to strengthen his side's flank virtually since his appointment at the club, with the lack of options in the position forcing him to use Steven Gerrard there for much of last term. The Spaniard's first choice had been to Sevilla's Daniel Alves but talks reached deadlock, with the Uefa Cup winners' refusal to drop their original £10m valuation of the Brazilian eventually ending Benítez's hopes completing that signing.
There were initially similar problems with Birmingham over Pennant when the opening bid of £3.5m was quickly dismissed; City must pay 25% of any fee for the 23-year-old to his former club, Arsenal, under the terms of the deal that took the former Notts County trainee long-term from Highbury to St Andrew's a year ago. City will rest a little easier now that they will eventually make a profit of £1.5m on a player who showed flashes of his quality last season, even if he was ultimately unable to prevent their relegation from the Premiership.

Like another of the new signings this summer, Craig Bellamy, Pennant will arrive at Anfield with much to prove. Secured as a 15-year-old from County by Arsenal for £2m, a record fee for a trainee at the time, his impact was blunted by a succession of disciplinary problems. Even a hat-trick on his Premiership debut for the Gunners, in 2003, failed to convince Arsène Wenger that his was a talent worth pursuing and loan spells at Watford, Leeds and Birmingham followed before he signed for City last summer.

That transfer went through despite Pennant's arrest for drink-driving after he crashed his Mercedes into a lamp-post in Aylesbury while serving a 16-month driving ban, an offence which saw him sentenced to 90 days in prison. He was eventually released on parole after 30 days and played with an electronic tag on his ankle.

Pennant will travel to Switzerland once the deal is complete, with Benítez still hopeful of adding another player, most likely the Dutch international forward Dirk Kuyt, to his squad before the new season. The club hope to make some progress in pursuit of that deal before the weekend.

just seen this...  a medical last night... im still waiting for news from our own website...

Reds close on Pennant deal
By Tom Adams -  Created on 26 Jul 2006

Reports suggest that Birmingham City winger Jermaine Pennant is closing in on a move to Liverpool.

The Reds have been tracking the former Arsenal man for some time and Steve Bruce revealed on Tuesday that the relegated side had rejected a bid of £3.5 million.

However it now seems as though Rafa Benitez is close to resolving his lengthy search for a right sided midfielder after tabling a bid in the region of £6.25 million.

Blues had been holding out for more due to a clause in the star's contract which guarantees Arsenal 25 percent of any sell-on fee, but with Pennant on his way to Liverpool to continue talks it appears their resolve has broken.

Despite Birmingham's relegation from The Premiership last season Pennant still managed to impress at St Andrews with his trickery and deadly crossing, and his signing would further reinforce a Liverpool squad already boosted by the arrivals of Craig Bellamy, Gabriel Paletta, Fabio Aurelio and Mark Gonzalez.

The 23-year-old originally moved to Blues on loan in January 2005, before completing a permanent deal worth £3 million in July of the same year.

is it just me or does anyone else agree that Pennant feels like a last resort signing, or at least last choice behind Simao (who i assume is now likely to join Chelsea given Duff's gone), Alves, and possibly a.n.other. Not sure why we should be doing such deals.

I'm not going to pass judgement on how good a player he is and how he stacks up against the others on the list, my only point is we had a clear preference for others but have had to settle on him. And yes money/value does matter but paying an extra £4m for an Alves can be easily recouped by one better performance from a better player (presumably why Simao/Alves were previous targets) in an important champions league game or the like - is it really worth sacrificing??

I do trust Rafa, but this deal, if it happens, and the way it has come about does concern me ???

I understand where you are coming from mate ,but I think Rafa had to make a decision ,buy Alves and no striker, or buy Pennant and hopefully a striker. If we could have got the money for Cisse im sure Rafa would have done things differently.

Most of the clubs in europe expect us to spend like cheatski. That's why most of them gave us hard times during transfer season..benfica, sevilla etc. Last season, no new right winger for us...this season, at least we'll get pennant and and he's quite good. At least liverpool wont have the same problems as arsenal..(99% foreign players) in the future.

Fair point s@int - i just thought we had been budgeting for a RW for a year now, so thought we had the coffers to get the player we really wanted, not the one we have settle for. Don't get me wrong, i hope JP proves to be a great signing, but he was clearly not our first choice, not by a long shot i imagine - after all Rafa knows English players are overvalued in general so why be held to ransom by Brum?

from BBC news this morning:

Birmingham dismiss Pennant claims

Birmingham have dismissed reports they have accepted Liverpool's offer for winger Jermaine Pennant.
Blues revealed earlier on Tuesday that they turned down a £3.5m offer for the 23-year-old.

The Press Association reported that Liverpool's improved bid - believed to be £6.2m - had been accepted.

But a Birmingham statement said: "The two clubs have talked on a couple of occasions, but they are a long way off in their respective valuations."

It added: "Until Birmingham's valuation is met the club will not even consider a move for Pennant.

"Contrary to reports in the media Birmingham City Football Club has not agreed a fee with Liverpool FC with Jermaine Pennant."

Perhaps if we had managed to sell some of the players no longer in our plans we could have had more possibilities. Clubs havent exactly been fighting over Traore,Kirkland, Diao or Letallec and we got a pitance for Cheyrou. Unfortunately this has forced Rafa to gamble on two players of questionable charactor.

Not long now as I heard that Pennant will be at Anfield today for a medical before flying out with the rest of the squad for the pre season tour!

I dont understand what the problem is with people.

"He is second class"

"pennant is third choice"

And the likes.

FFS Ronalinho is first choice, but we have not signed him cus:

1) He will cost around £50m, so is over our valuation of the player, which is more like £20m.

2) His Chairman is not willing to let him go.

3) We dont have hte money to meet his clubs valuation of the player.

Therefore we go for someone who we can prise away, will not use all of our budget and who we beleive is priced reasonably in relation to his talent.

Alves at £8m is the man, but at £12m he is definitly not.

Pennant at £6m is the man.
