AussieKopite wrote:All right lads, I bang on about being a Aussie all the time so I may as well give you boys a bit of an update. Now, being born and bred in Brisbane I am naturally a Queensland Roar supporter. Even got myself on one of the highlights packages after a round.

The current table looks like this:
                      W D L P
1.Sydney          7 2 3 23
2.Adelaide         7 2 3 23
3.Perth             6 2 4 20
4.Newcastle      5 3 4 18
5.Melbourne      4 4 4 16
6.Queensland     4 4 4 16
7.Central Coast  4 3 5 15
8.New Zealand   1 0 11 3

As you can see, only eight teams are in the comp and that its pretty tight from 1-7. New Zealand is quickly becoming an embarassment with the FFA (Football Federation Australia) is trying to help them out. This is a bigger problem than you might think as there is no promotion/relegation system in Australia.

In general the results have been favouring the away teams which noone seems to be able to explain. Sydney of course are going well with Dwight Yorke and have signed for a short time Kazu - famed stiker from the J-League (Japan). When Sydney played last in Queensland everytime Yorke touched the ball, he was booed,

There has also been some good supporters groups from around the country, the most vocal being The Den's Roar Army and Roar Rejects, as well as the Melbourne Victory's The Union.

With Australia moving into the Asian Football Confederation from Oceania next year, the AFC and the FFA are trying to see if the top two Australian clubs can join this coming Asian Champions League. However there are some problems with the AFC planning a major overhaul of the ACL and the problem that if they do admit the Australians, they need to expand it from a 28 team comp to a 32 team comp, so then they need to work out who also gets in. The FFA are not optimistic however the AFC are trying to do all they can. The FFA is already being invited to AFC meetings even though they are not actual members as yet.

Finally, Queensland has been dominating in possession, and have the best defence in the league, while also dominating in midfield. However the fans have been frustrated by their inability to execute once in the penalty box. (Sounds like another one of my favourite teams) In fact, they have the second worst attacking record.

Anyway, I thought I'd update everyone as Liverpool fans do pride themselves on being some of the most knowledgable in the footballing community.

Cheers from Australia.

the question is ''do you want kewell in january''

:D   :wwww   :lookaround   :D

i love love for him to play for the roar, but i think that he'll be better used in Liverpool

The Roar certainly need someone up front to score goals. I thought Brosque, Baird, Brownlie and little Richter might have done a bit better than they have...they certainly have the punch to get to goal but nothing to finish it off. Although I think you guys were robbed against Newcastle last week.

Brisbane Lions is a former NSL club, but I believe the Roar's licence came from a Lion's backed group. The AussieKopite might be able to clarify or deny this.

I think George played for most clubs at one time or another. He even played here in Hobart back in the 70's. Now that's scraping the barrell!!!  :eyebrow

Brisbane were named the "Strikers" when the NSL was ceased. Maybe they changed the name, but the only Brisbane Lions team I have known of in my few years living in Oz is the AFL team.

Yeah BBC lists in his career tally 4 games with Brisbane Lions back in 1983, not sure if that was old name for strikers or totally different Queensland NSL side

Brisbane Lions as we know then are an AFL (Gaelic football) team.

Queensland Lions were a rich state team who bought a lot of the best players. It also has strong Dutch connections hence the bright orange. The Queensland Lions won the bid for the franchise for Brisbane however because of the closeness of their name to the 3-time Premiers of the AFL the Brisbane Lions the decision was made to change it to the Queensland Roar.

Brisbane Strikers were the last team to represent Brisbane in the old NSL, however the turbulent nature of the old NSL meant that a fairly recent newcomer to the sport such as myself (2000) finds it hard to know the history of the NSL.

I'd like to say that the Queensland Roar have lost all chance of making the finals of the A-League with their 1-0 loss to Melcourne Victory. Scorer was PSV Eindhoven bound Socceroo stiker Archie Thompson in his farewell match before starting his 6-month loan to Guus Hiddink.

The Australian A-League wraps up it's first season after next weeks round of matches but the final four have been decided:

Team                       P   W   D   L   F   A    Pts
Adelaide United         20  13  4    3  32  23   43
Sydney FC               20   9   6    5  33  27   33
Central Coast           20   8   7    5  33  26   31
Newcastle Jets         20   9   4    7  26  26   31
Queensland Roar       20   7   6    7  25  20   27
Perth Glory              20   7   5    8  31  28   26
Melbourne Victory     20   6   5    9  24  23   23
New Zealand Knights 20   1   3   16 14  45    6

2nd, 3rd & 4th final finishing are still open and subject to next weekend's final fixture.

A good first season apart from the inclusion of New Zealand Knights (not competative). Hopefully the competition will grow from here and go on to bigger and better things.

Do you mean Perth 'Glory' or the A-League in general?? I can understand your disappointment in Perth but most other clubs have been models of inconsistency as well. Adelaide is about the only team that can be proud of themsleves this year. For anyone else but Adelaide to win the finals series would be unfair and unjust.
