A-league update - Queensland roar

International Football/Football World Wide - General Discussion

Postby AussieKopite » Fri Nov 18, 2005 12:37 pm

All right lads, I bang on about being a Aussie all the time so I may as well give you boys a bit of an update. Now, being born and bred in Brisbane I am naturally a Queensland Roar supporter. Even got myself on one of the highlights packages after a round.

The current table looks like this:
                      W D L P
1.Sydney          7 2 3 23
2.Adelaide         7 2 3 23
3.Perth             6 2 4 20
4.Newcastle      5 3 4 18
5.Melbourne      4 4 4 16
6.Queensland     4 4 4 16
7.Central Coast  4 3 5 15
8.New Zealand   1 0 11 3

As you can see, only eight teams are in the comp and that its pretty tight from 1-7. New Zealand is quickly becoming an embarassment with the FFA (Football Federation Australia) is trying to help them out. This is a bigger problem than you might think as there is no promotion/relegation system in Australia.

In general the results have been favouring the away teams which noone seems to be able to explain. Sydney of course are going well with Dwight Yorke and have signed for a short time Kazu - famed stiker from the J-League (Japan). When Sydney played last in Queensland everytime Yorke touched the ball, he was booed,

There has also been some good supporters groups from around the country, the most vocal being The Den's Roar Army and Roar Rejects, as well as the Melbourne Victory's The Union.

With Australia moving into the Asian Football Confederation from Oceania next year, the AFC and the FFA are trying to see if the top two Australian clubs can join this coming Asian Champions League. However there are some problems with the AFC planning a major overhaul of the ACL and the problem that if they do admit the Australians, they need to expand it from a 28 team comp to a 32 team comp, so then they need to work out who also gets in. The FFA are not optimistic however the AFC are trying to do all they can. The FFA is already being invited to AFC meetings even though they are not actual members as yet.

Finally, Queensland has been dominating in possession, and have the best defence in the league, while also dominating in midfield. However the fans have been frustrated by their inability to execute once in the penalty box. (Sounds like another one of my favourite teams) In fact, they have the second worst attacking record.

Anyway, I thought I'd update everyone as Liverpool fans do pride themselves on being some of the most knowledgable in the footballing community.

Cheers from Australia.

At least they changed the name from National Soccer League to the A-League. Australians are used to having names like that, AFL - Lions, Bombers & Swans; NRL - Broncos, Roosters & Storm; ARU - Warritahs, Reds & Brumbies.

Football is trying to reinvent itself in Australia so it has to endear itself to the masses.

In the press O'Neill the Executive Director of the FFA said the the CEO of the AFL (similar to Gaelic Football) said that every time the Socceroos fail to qualify for the World Cup, they open a bottle of French Chamagne. O'neill mentioned that he hoped they worked out how to get the cork back in the bottle.

Well I'm a Newcastle fan being born in the steel city, even though I now reside in Hobart (Tasmania).

I enjoy the closness of the A-League. It seems as though there are no foregone conclusions as far as results go, that is unless you are playing New Zealand Knights!!!

The new league needs a youth or second tier competition though, and badly...where do all the up and coming young players play otherwise apart from State Premier League comps.

Long live this new national comp.     :D
