THE MICHAEL OWEN THREAD - all owen talk here from now on please

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby stmichael » Wed Aug 24, 2005 3:32 pm

Following last night there's so much doom and gloom on here it's starting to depress me. The main concern of most supporters seems to be the lack of "big name" signings considering that we are currently the champions of europe. Well it appears now that Owen will not be coming back, even though we could desperately do with him, but we should count ourselves lucky. We could currently be without Owen and Gerrard. As great as Owen would be for us, given a choice of having either him or Gerrard in the side and I'm sure most would pick the latter, especially given his form so far this season.

We dont have pots of money. If the Toon have agreed a record fee for the club, ie, in excess of 15 million, we just don't have that sort of money to spend on one player. And even if we did how where is the 5 million improvement been in Owen this year? Generally speaking, we are far far too critical too quickly of our players, in particular our strikers. Its a new system, with some new players and these things take time. I cant believe there's talk of offlading Cisse already, I've watched all the games so far, and as far as I am concerned he is making steady progress. The one thing with Owen however, is he can do all the things that Cisse does, only better. Mori is a worry but he has been great everywhere else so I havent given up on him yet. Crouch has hardly even played yet so leave him alone! Despite this, I still think we desperately need him and there's absolutely no doubt that he wants to come back. Hell he's on the phone to Jamie Carragher nearly every other day.

remember we sold his for £8M coz he had less than a year left on his contract. £18M is a bargain wen u consider cisse cost £14M and drogba cost £24M and crouch cost £7M, etc.
we've only won it 5 times

I'm afraid I am gonna have to eat my words about Michael Owen. We badly need him back.

Watching the game last night from row 8, we were so poor it was untrue. All this cr*p about Cisse saying he is going to score loads of goals for us.

No you aint mate! This aint french football.

And what was all this boll*x of Sissoko doing all these silly back heel flicks that never came off! who does he think we are BRAZIL ?

muppet.

Having Said that, It is certain Rafa will not sign Owen. Driving home half and hour after tha match i listend to him beng interviewed on radio city 96.7 fm.

Reporter: " So after this performance, would you say you still dont need michael owen?"

Rafa: " we have strikers, we created lots of chances and they just need to score more"

Reporter: " So you will definately not be signing Michael Owen" ?

Rafa: "We have two strikers"

Now correct me if Im wrong, but with the transfer window closing in days, Rafa surely would have said "yes we are interested" if he really was, as there is nothing to hide.
I think he is just being polite by not Directly saying he doesnt want owen. its obvious he doesnt.

what short memories people have  :no

Owen shafted Liverpool FC just 12 months ago...now, because his Real Madrid 'dream' has turned into a nightmare, Rafa is suppose to drop everything......scrap his transfer plans, just because Owen has now 'decided' Liverpool is good enough for him?  :veryangry

I'm behind RAfa on this......Owen can go rot!  :veryangry

it could just be that Newcastle have had to put the statement on their website to appease their own fans - most of them must be miffed as to why Owen only wants to go to Newcastle on loan and would rather sign premanently for Liverpool - after all they still believe they are a big club with big ambitions (perhaps not for a while eh)

why start the bidding at £18m when all the recent speculation has been that £12m would prove enough, for £6m you can buy another player, like Scott Parker!

think the whole thing has been handled badly by RM, MO, Liverpool, Rafa etc but still think all is not lost and we could yet see him back at Anfield

Michael Owen is miles better than any striker we have at the club, period. He made a mistake by leaving us and is now big enough and honest enough to realise he has made the biggest mistake of his professional career. It's not like we don't need him!! Rather than drag the lad over hot coals. i appeal to Rafa and the board to put in place whatever is necessary to bring Michael home and I also appeal to all those who doubt him to give him a chance, we all know he'll provide the goods. The difference between when he left and now is that now we're creating chances galore and Owen would have a field day. Let's all swallow our pride and move the club on. What's in the past has gone. All I'm worried about is the future and improving this club. Michael Owen would do that. I know it, the fans know it and even Rafa knows it, even if he is denying it.

Why would he come out and say that he wants to play for us if there was no interest from us? There must be interest for him to come out with this statemant in the first place if you ask me.

Whats the Difference?!?!?!?!  I'll tell you the difference!  Ian Rush openly admited he wanted to play abroad......fine, no problem.  If a player wants to move on, so be it.  The difference between Rush and Owen is,

Rush NEVER deliberatly ran down his contract

Rush didn't tell his agent to start negotiations with another club in regards to a BOSMAN transfer (albe it the Bosman rule didn't exsist)

Owen REFUSED to sign a contract.....in fact he done worse than that.....he gave the impression he WOULD sign a NEW deal in the summer and by that stage Liverpool were shafted because Owen's fee was halfed, he wouldn't sign a new deal and his agent said he had agreed terms for a Bosman deal should the transfer fail.

Legend?  Owen isn't fit to clean Rush's boots.

I would love to have Owen back.  He'll guarantee the 20+ goals.  Rafa should make a move for him.

But, if he goes to Newcastle, I think that would hurt his career.  Owen should've stayed with Liverpool from age 17 all the way to retirement.  He goes to Madrid and the Toon and he probably wont get a single trophy.  If he had stayed with us, then he could've been celebrating with SG and Carra on May 25, instead of watching TV.

Michael, its time for you to come back.  You'll win plenty of trophies here.  Rafa needs to make a bid right now.  Friday will be too late.  Owen's made a mistake and now he should come back and make up for it with 30 goals.
You'll Never Walk Alone

Wrong.

Rushy didn't want to go in the first place. When Juve made us a big offer he accepted the move out of loyalty to LFC, putting the club's interests ahead of his own, but he would never have chosen to go in a million years.

Well if Rafa isn't signing Owen because he has a grudge against him he isn't the right manager for us its just not a professional attitude. Owen is better than the other strikers we have at the moment. Rafa has tried and failed to sign cover for the centre backs (Josemi and Pellegrino) is he just going to keep throwing £1 or £2 million at it at a time thinking sooner or later he'll get lucky with one of these signings (LIKE HOULLIER)? Now he has the chance to sign someone we all know is better than what we have at the moment.
