Chelsea forever. wrote:A.B. wrote:Another person obssesed with ''big name signings''. When Wenger bought Henry,Pires,Vieira,etc... they were hardly big names and many didn't think of them of class players. Look at them now.
I agree.
But remember one thing. None of Wengers players have performed in Europe or for their country bar Bergkamp (who is a legend) and Viera (who does play well).
Henry and Pires have been great in the EPL. But for country and in the CL they have been very poor.
Viera is good for France. Viera is ok for Arsenal in Europe, although he has never managed to get them past the group stages in his 9 years at the club. Viera was great for them in the EPL.
All this might be down to Wengers management. His players are top class in the EPL but seem to be a shadow of themselves in Europe. I can quite understand why a player of the quality and caliber of Henry cant perform well for France.
Quite a mystery if you ask me!
Chelsea, I don't know if you remember a couple of days ago when I had a little pop about you trying to steer discussions onto everything blue. Well this contrived, silly and obvious attempt to turn a general point about buying unproven and non "big name" players into a comparison between how well Chelsea and Arsenal have done in the Champions League is precisely what I'm talking about. Now I know you will come back and deny that is what you were doing but that will do you no credit whatsoever, we both know that I am correct on this one.
Not only is it a point which doesn't need to be made here, covertly or otherwise (after all, we are the European Champions so don't talk to us about doing well in Europe) but as the Judge has pointed out, it is factually incorrect. Further, if you cast your mind back to your glorious past when you put Arsenal (the best team in Europe at that point, bar none) out of the CL at the quarter final stage, you will recall that Chelsea were very fortunate to prevail. Further, you will also recall that they were then comfortably beaten in the semi's by a very ordinary Monaco team, who were subsequently humbled 3-0 in the final by another at best above average team, Porto.
My point? Remember it's a Liverpool forum and keep the posts based at least slightly on a factual basis. to describe World Cup and European Championship winners as not "performing for their country" is laughable.
