New centre back required - Campbell or king maybe

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

We all know that we need a new CB for the new season ahead. The Milito deal is almost dead and buried and he would have probably cost us £10m. What about Sol Campbell for the next couple of season's. He now has competition at arsenal and he will not be happy sitting on the bench for most of the season especially with the world cup next year. If not Campbell, maybe a long term investment in Ledley King . He would probably go for £10-12m and he would be a great partner for Carra. What do you guys think? Whatever, happens we need someone with pace and including Gallas we need someone pretty soon.

Already a thread made discussing this matter.

King is an unrealistic target btw and Campbell is at his peak currently suffering from constant injuries and will miss the start of the season.

Not sure, King would cost too much and Campbell is too old now and tends to get injuries, it all depends on how much Rafa is looking to spend really ???

Quality centre backs it seems are like gold at the moment. Fortunately we have one in Carra and one who based on what we have this season is at best rusty and at worst past it. As a stop-gap one off Gerrard could certainly play there. He posesses all the attributes required and any mistakes would be disguised by his pace.
Realistically though, we probably need two new players which this near to the season starting is going to be difficult. I've said it many times before that I think we need someone who would adapt immediately to the Prem, maybe even someone who already plays in it. They need to be young, strong, powerful and quick. Unfortunately these blokes don't come cheap but sometimes you gotta dig deep.
Get on the phone, how much do they want for Ledley King? My suspicion is that a bid of around 18 million would do the trick both in terms of tempting Spurs and of turning the head of a top young player (Spurs are not in Europe at all this season and the World Cup is the Summer). He IS the player the player we need I'm convinced of it. We're not Chelsea by any means but given the fact the strings are tight at Manure and Arsenal now could be the time to dig deep and close the gap.
Go get him. He is our man.

I agree....Ledley King would be an excellent long term solution. I also agree with Mick's point about a player with Prem experience being prefferable. With that in mind I think Matt Upson would be a great signing too. Gallas is unrealistic but i'd love to see it. Campbell is past it, I really think so and would cost too much for too little

With the amount of money we would of had to shell out for Milito, surely there are endless possibilities. Big name defenders with top reputations down to next big things. If we were going to splash £10+ for Gabby, then surely we can have a look at the likes of Samuel, Upson, Andrade, Bouma, Zauri, etc, etc. It may just be the CM talking, but are those Brazilians really happy at Leverkusan? They are the bridesmaids after all. There are a thousand names in England, Italy, France, Spain and Germany which would fit the bill, why not get suited and booted and do some shopping?

Colocinni won't be leaving Deportivo, because he joined them in January and I don't think he's keen on a move right now.

Andrade and Upson would do the trick.  I do not believe that a move for King is realistic at all.  With all the money Spurs are throwing around right now, I doubt they would be willing to dump their defensive anchor (they will need him to pick up Davids man after he dribbles past him....:D )

The money we were going to shell out for Gab's, plus Baros should be able to land us both Andrade and Upson.  Carra/Andrade with Upson/Sami and Whitbread as cover will do us nicely in all of the fixtures we have this year i think.

Werent we lining up a 6 million bid for gallas a while back?

I dont think gallas is happy at chelsea with mourinho.  Mourinho would probably start ferreria, terry, carvalho, and bridge/del horno.  I think we should go after him.

If not gallas, then we should get upson or andrade.  Spurs wouldnt let king go for less than 12-14 million.  Thats more than what we offered to zaragoza for milito.
