Crouch and figo - Why and why not!

Rafa Benitez feels it will be difficult for Liverpool to sign Luis Figo as the European champions close on a deal for Peter Crouch.

Portugal international Figo has expressed a desire to move to Anfield after falling out with Real Madrid coach Wanderley Luxemburgo.

But the transfer has hit an impasse as Real are demanding a fee for the experienced winger while Liverpool want to land Figo on a free transfer.

A compromise is proving arduous to come to and Reds boss Benitez believes the chances of the mercurial wide man moving to Merseyside are receding.

"We have two or three options for the right side and we are trying to see which is the best option," said Benitez.

"Figo will be difficult. At this moment it is really difficult."

Benitez, though, is hoping to add another fresh face to his squad before the start of the season after maintaining his interest in Southampton striker Crouch.

Saints have already rejected two bids from Liverpool and are believed to be seeking around £8 million for the England international.

Crouch has voiced a willingness to secure a quick return to The Premiership and Benitez confirmed talks with Southampton are ongoing.

He added: "He (Crouch) is a player I like and I would like that we finish talking about Crouch as soon as possible.

"We want to see the player working with us as soon as possible.

"Rick Parry is in contact with Southampton. Always, the manager wants a player as soon as possible for training with them."

Liverpool have almost finalised their swoop for Valencia midfielder Mohamed Sissoko, while Benitez is also keen to recruit a new centre half.

Im a bit disappointed that the Figo deal is in doubts. He really is one of the best players on the right and would be a wonderful signing for Liverpool.

What i cant understand is what you will do with Crouch!?

I mean, with attackers like Cisse,Baros, Fernando - not to mention Garcia and Kewell  :no , what is crouch going to do? Will he get a game ahead of these?

He clearly isnt a world class forward. He is good in the air and is an ok player otherwise. Why would you want to buy a half bet?

Cheers

The way I see it, Rafa is stockpiling talent as back up for the forwards and mid's, where we were worst struck last year to injury.

Crouch fits a role, good in the air, set piece role player.  Rafa is a master tactician, and understands that besides Mori and Hypia, we are lacking in that department.

Figo on the other hand is a luxury.  We are deep in the Midfield.  Figo's talent and experience would be a great benefit to the squad, but is not a need.  Hence, Rafa is not going to be held to ransom by Real to get a deal done.  It is a well stated fact that Real would let him go, if he negotiated a location to pay his wages.  Now that it is the 'pool, those bastidos are trying to snatch two pounds of flesh.  If he was going to Fulham, it would be on a free.

Needless to say.  Either player would be a solid addition to the squad, but neither is needed (Crouch's arguement notwithstanding).  What we need is help in the back.  Upson, Milito.........whomever!  We need some able bodies on the back line, or we will be in worse trouble than last season.

Pellegrino, who on his best day gave the ball up quicker than a two dollar whore, at least gave us depth.  I fear seeing Traore anywhere near the middle.

RAFA, sign a defender FFS!!!!!!!!!!!
