Djibril cisse - Worth buying?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby LFC #1 » Sat Mar 06, 2004 7:31 am

I believe Djibril Cisse is a class striker. He is the leading goal scorer in France this year and i see highlights of the french league and he is similar to Henry in his play (not quite as good!). The question is whether he can perform in the premiership, we've seen quality players come from other leagues before and be rubbish in England, Veron for example!

Yeah, he could be the next Zidane or Henry, or he could be the next Diouf, Cheyrou, Smicer.......

I've seen him play 6 or 7 times and been totally unimpressed.
I just hope he was having a few off days when I saw him play, that's a serious amount of money if he doesn't work out!!
Let's hope he's the next Henry and not the next Heskey !!  ???

I'm a french fan of Olympique de Marseille.
and i can say Djibril Cissé is a great striker, he is only 22 years and he scored 17 goals, I think it's not the future Henry but you can buy him.

another thing, would Cisse come if houllier was sacked? I think Cisse has a lot of respect for houllier and they're both french.

If anyone out there can get SportRO or Canal+Sport then Cisse will be playing against Lille today at around 4.30.
Don't be fooled by the highlights and watch him for the whole match - if he's worth 12million then I give up. How Houllier can waste our clubs money on these glory boys is beyond me. We are in no position to take players like this on until we have 9 or 10 players carrying their weight. He will be a luxury we don't need and when you consider that the likes of Smith will no doubt come available at the end of the season the purchase baffles me.
£120 million plus wages and we still rely on players who cost nothing!!!

I tend to agree with most skeptics as the French league is a bit of a mickey mouse league compared to the Premiership or Spain or even Italy. No disrespect to France, but it does not take a very special player to be a top scorer there because there as even the best French players ply their trade outside France and the French league has been a good breeding ground for foreign players who largely coma from former French colonies like the African continent.
The French league would help develop more tactical awareness for these players but they would still lack that extra 5% or so high-end skills of the top players in other top leagues and also the French based players would be relatively ill-equipped to thrive in the hustle and bustle of the English game. An exception is Pires who came directly from France but he has sublime skills and he has the benefit of having compatriots at Arsenal who are not only world class, but also helped him to settle down at Arsenal.
Perhaps this is why Liverpool's French based imports have largely failed...

If the figure of 12 million being bantered around is true for his signature, sounds very over priced to me.  That sort of money should buy a player of proven class who could adapt to any league,  im sorry but he is not in that category from what ive seen. I hope he proves me wrong!  For half that price would Defoe not of been a better addition? or Forsell at chelsea, class act.  If you can score on a regular basis in that Birmingham team, well it speaks for itself.

I am getting fed up about buying more French players, it is getting boring for Liverpool. I think we should buy Robbie Earnshaw of Cardiff City, well, you all may not agree with me because you might be think that he is not good enough to play for Liverpool, well, you don't know that. That's why he is young chap, very fast and furious, very good technique too. He always cause defenders problems, he love to attack all the time. I feel that he is the right man for Liverpool.

Have you all seen him yet? I rate him very highly and it is cheaper for us to buy him, about 6 to 7m quids to buy him, and Cisse is not worth it that price of crazy 14m quids, he doesn't impressed me.

I havent seen too much of him but i saw him score a quality goal last weekend which the like sof Henry would have been proud of and this was on the back of an apparent goal drought (although he's still got 17 so its not a drought of Heskey proportions)- sorry that wasnt necessary

Yeah, why not buy a lower division player so he can make us look really cr@p. Zamora ring any (alarm) bells?!?!?!?!? Stead has made a minor impression, yet to see if that will last. There must be some regular internationals playing in a weak league who we could snap up at a fraction of the cost, buying French is like when Norway beat us in the 1994 World Cup qualifiers and they all flooded in here. Trouble with the French league is they're quite happy to rip us off based on reputation and "promise"
