Spain for 2 weeks, cant wait to get out of the humidity here and looking forward to being able to walk places and just stopping at a bar, sitting outside and having a beer.

Thinking of having a week in LAS VEGAS in October.

Haven't decided upon a hotel, been looking at the Bellagio and the Mirage, still undecided.

Any tips from you lads about hotels and stuff in Las Vegas would be appreciated

A brother in law of mine was living in San Fran about 13 years ago so went there on a 3 week holiday. While there we went to Vegas for 3 nights and stayed in the MGM and I would reccomend there. It is a nice modern spot and it cost 370usd each for hotel and return flights to san fran but it was midweek and in October.
He went regular enough and often stayed in Circus Circus or Golden Nugget and they are cheaper but a bit rundown imo. Being honest quite a few places are really outdated as well like the Tropicana which is like a trip to the 70,s. I had the missus with me so that wouldnt suit .  At the time the Wynne Casino was just ready to open and have heard its nice also.

It really is some spot Woof but a week would have been far too long for me. The heat was unbelievable mate and takes its toll when your ***** all the time

Holiday is primarily a thanks to missus woof for sticking with me for over thirty years.
Heard good things about the "Wynne", but still thinking "Bellagio" (fountains in front) or the Mirage (Beatles "Love" show).

Take your point on a week could be too long, weather aside,  Missus Woof loves a gamble, we could be out of money by day three     

Looking at maybe a 4-5 night visit now.

 

Not far off 20 myself so maybe its time to be leaving little subtle hints about the place  .

As soon as the plane doors open you can hear the slots chiming away in the airport  its only a few minute cab ride to the strip as well so not costly at all. The Wynne is at the bottom end across from a shopping mall if I remember correctly so herself will be plenty entertained between bouts of gambling  .

Only bit of advice I will give Woof is have 2 separate wads of cash because the tipping is constant everywhere. Taxi driver will drop your bags at the door and his hand is out, The bellboy will pick them up and drop them 20 yds away at the desk and hand out, Then another lad will bring them to your room and hand out so just have one pocket full of dollar bills because its mandatory to tip and you wont get away with not handing something over. They only get paid tips as far as I know but the plus side of that is you can get whatever you want to drink for about 2 bucks 

Be sure to check out the Baccarat tables where the high rollers are like blowing 20k per game    Its actually quite entertaining to watch  . You will have an absolute ball mate so be sure to post back how you get on.

I was in Vegas for a business course a few years ago - its  what the hotels do midweek waiting for the weekend gamblers to roll in. Only time I've been to was made up to see the famous strip, however once you're off it... there isn't a whole lot of things to do or see. It's a typical US city, you need a car to go anywhere or do anything. I wanted to get some presents for the kids and by the time I'd paid for the taxi there and back its a fecking expensive Action Man! San Diego or San Fran would be my choice.

Never been to Vegas and probably never will. Just a personal preference but it's way too vulgar for my liking. There's probably more culture in a pot of yoghurt than there is in pretty much any US destination.

Cheers Reg, once spent 3 months in Southern California (based just outside San Diego) loved the whole area, got to visit LA, Palm Springs and many other places. Never got as far up as San Francisco but it's on the bucket list

What kind of things do you and your wife like to do, Woof?
I live relatively close to Vegas, and typically travel there for work a few times per year. I've been there for fun a time or two as well. I'm personally not the biggest of fans, but it's all about preference. There's not a lot to do during the day if you're not gambling, and same during the week. The city really blows up on the weekends tho. Most your time will be spent at a bar/club drinking, or at a casino gambling. The place is in the desert with nothing else around- I'm sure it's set up that way so you're forced to gamble. Most activities like shows are pretty expensive- again pushing you to gamble instead. If you're looking for a couple things to do, I'd recommend a couple things to check out:

Golf if you like it- A lot of nice golf courses that are affordable

Top Golf- It's a golf driving range set up like a bowling alley. They have micro chips in each golf ball and you hit them at targets. The balls are tracked and you score points. You don't have to be good at golf, or even like golf to play- most people enjoy it. There's food and drinks there too.

Gun range- I'm not sure where you're from or what gun laws are like there, but it wouldn't be a trip to America without shooting some guns! The state of Nevada actually has some of the most lax gun laws, so there are quite a few ranges in Vegas where you can shoot a large assortment of firearms, including fully automatic guns. It's not cheap, but it's fun.

Enjoy a hike? Zion National Park- I think it's about 2 hours outside of Vegas. One of my favorite national parks. Gorgeous views and a wide variety of hikes with different difficulties. Rent a car and go for a day trip, or stay a night if you want to spend a bit more time.

Helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon, or over Vegas at night- I've never done it, but heard good things.

Circus Circus is a giant arcade in the middle of a casino. It's designed for kids, but most people enjoy old-style arcade games.

Swing by the Honolulu Cookie Company- Their cookies don't look good, but they're fantastic. Good opportunity to bring gifts home too.

Look for places that sell "Yard Margaritas"- They're just massive margaritas a few feet tall (sorry, american standard system). Vegas is a wet city, so you can walk around the strip with your drinks.

Don't go to the Hoover Damn. Somebody will tell you it's amazing. It's not, and it's a couple hours from Vegas. Just don't do it. A lot of the Museums' aren't that great either- they're tourist traps that aren't worth the money.

If you feel like you're running through money and want to go to a cheaper Casino, try Hooters, Tropicana (both on the edge of the strip), or Hard Rock. Hard Rock is in the middle and a little nicer. The first 2 are kinda shitty, but you can play $5 or $10 blackjack or other table games and they will bring you free drinks (true for any casino).

A lot of people will try to pull you into clubs or strips clubs while you're walking around. Ignore them. If they're trying to pull you into it, it's because it's because nobody wants to go there.
Will you have internet on your phone? If so, download Uber. Not sure if it's popular where you live, but you call on driver through the app, they pick you up wherever, and it's significantly cheaper than using a Taxi. Typically cleaner too.
Vegas has some really good food. If you're willing to go a few miles off the strip, there's some great restaurants that aren't very expensive. There's obviously tons of great food on the strip as well- The buffet's at the nicer casinos are really good (Cesar's and Bellagio, I think?)

More than a couple days in Vegas may be too much if you don't love gambling for large portions of the day. It will probably still be really hot, too. If you really love gambling, it's the place for you. If it's not the main staple of your trip, there's some great destinations close by that you guys could cheaply fly to out of Vegas depending on what you like to do.

You must try shooting Woof, where else can you shoot all sorts of weapons and not get arrested? My favorite was clay pigeon shooting but even shooting all kinds hand guns is a blast, might I suggest the high caliber hand guns. Remember, its only bad when you aim at people, aiming at targets in entertainment 

Also I went to Vegas for a horse show and then drove to Scottsdale and it was a stunning drive through the Cactus filled desert, watch out for rattle snakes when you stop halfway to pee in the desert.

At my age maybe Las Vegas isn't now the place for me 

Should've gone 20 years ago when I could still walk a mile or two with no sweat , but I didn't have the money then

I'm now thinking about a tour of the European Alps, Switzerland to Italy by local train !   

Sorry to hear that Woof but you should reconsider as its one of those places you have got to experience for yourself  Maybe break it up a bit and spend a few nights in San Fran seeing as you would be travelling that far.

Back in the early 90's I travelled from Vienna to Milan by train and it was scenic alright but a bit boring in fairness. Spent most of it in the bar 

If you are looking for something really scenic and relaxed then Iceland would be a good shout. Brought the wife a couple of years ago for her 40th and it was really enjoyable. It isn't half as expensive as people make out either. We flew from Dublin return for around 180 euro's and stayed 3 nights in the Hilton Canopy for about 130 euro per night. its right in the centre of Reykjavik as well so walking distance to everywhere. The tours range from 50 to 100 euro each but well worth it and are pretty much sewn up by 2 companies which pick up and drop off from most hotels or within a min or 2 walk. We did a weekend and took in the Northern lights tour, The Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle tour which went to the Geysers, Waterfalls and the Pingvellir national park where the tectonic plates are separated. The tours were excellent and the guides brilliant. I would recommend going in December or January when its cold and covered in about a foot of frost cos I think its too cold to snow  . The place has a ton of history as well.

Took the train from Bologna to Salzburg. You go through the Alps, it makes for a fantastic viewing.

Try the Munich - Milan or Zurich - Milan train trip.
