Luis Suarez signs for Barcelona

International Football/Football World Wide - General Discussion

AS journalist Javier Matallanas on Monday morning claimed that Real Madrid have opened talks with Liverpool over the transfer of Luis Suarez. He says that the Spanish club initially gave up on the idea of a move in July when it became clear Liverpool would not accept the €40m they had wanted to pay for Suarez. Arsenal were turned away with higher bids and Arsene Wenger has since said that his club have no chance of signing Suarez because he's 'chosen another'.

The journalist claims his paper have been contacted in the last few hours by sources close to Suarez to say that Real Madrid have re-opened talks with Liverpool. The Spanish club was Suarez's dream choice for a transfer and he's made no secret of that this summer. Inviting Marca to his Merseyside home wasn't the best PR move but the player was relentless in making sure Madrid knew just how keen he was to make the transfer happen.

Matallanas says that Real Madrid had been minded to stick with Benzema and Morata upfront but with the former being the subject of speculation himself and performing poorly against Real Betis, it's given Ancelotti's side a nudge to see if they can get Suarez. It would be hard for the club to get the money together unless they sold players but with reports surrounding possible exits for Coentrao, Benzema, Ozil and Di Maria, then it's clear where the money would come from. Real Madrid would think that the sale of two of those players would pay for the arrival of Suarez.

An amount isn't mentioned but Liverpool will surely be 'happier' to sell Suarez to Real Madrid than Arsenal. Liverpool have started the season well without Suarez and may see this as a good opportunity to swap a restless player for a big chunk of cash so Brendan Rodgers can invest even more.

I expect Real to come in, even more so with this Bale news going round. I hope not though, I'd rather not be p!ssing into the wind searching for a replacement this close to the window closing

I'd rather hope we'll finish top 4 this season and he stays.

Just for the record. Luis has now missed 15 games as a result of being banned. We have WON 11 LOST 2 DRAWN 2. If we had that sort of record when he's playing we could win the league !!! I still don't want him to go anywhere. United at home, Swansea away and Sunderland at home and then we will see an end to Suarez's ban.

If the club sell him on the last day of the season we will have paid him during a period this season when he has missed 4 matches due to being banned. I think it would have to be an absolutely crazy deal for us to buckle now.
Net Spend Over The Last 5 Years 20/21 to 24/25  (10 years
are in brackets 15/16 to 24/25 )
LFC €300m (€420m)
Everton +€33m (€211m)
Arsenal €557m (€853m)
Spurs €571m (€684m)
Chelsea €945m (€1051m)
Man City €370m (€1038m)
Man United €687m (€1240m)

it doesnt matter what the bid is and what the stats are when he dont play. he is a top player and he wont be replaced.
if he leaves now during this window then john henry has lost all credibility in my book.

every player we have signed since FSG took over has replaced one that was earning high wages so they are not likely to buck that trend.
suarez leaves and god knows what we will end up with

Actually he will be back for the Sunderland game, all domestic games count towards the ban. Now we have progressed to the League Cup 3rd round - this will count also. The 3rd round is scheduled for week of September 23rd (after the Swansea game).

I'm not sure about that statement. It may look that way but it is most likely that Rodgers has a salary budget to work with. I think Rodgers intentionally is freeing up salary cash to be able to pay decent money to big signings.

It seems the salary strategy is to pay on the very few star players big money, the rest are on lower salaries that are incentivised based on performance. Which, in my opinion, is a great way to ensure you are NOT signing mercenaries.

it is that way SCS, not one player has been given a salary that trumps the player he is replacing.
im not disputing rodgers has to work within budgets because its obvious he does. we have been slashing wages at this club for a while now and it doesnt seem to be reflecting any change in the pay structure for new arrivals.  suarez is the biggest player at the club and his wage is rumoured to be 80k basic rising to 120k with the incentive. he is the top player at the club and he is on a deal like that so why would you think we would pay ozil or di maria what they currently earn at madrid ? maybe the reason we are losing our top targets is because we want to give them deals like this.
i believe its a good way of losing players tbh, other clubs will always poach them because they will exploit that structure.
we have been offering players (even an international) a trial, we are all about rent a player before we buy and we will not even pay a fee the club is asking.
i dont think policies like this are befitting of a massive worldwide brand such as liverpool, look at the support we recieved on the preseason tour and try and tell me we cannot afford to push the boat out a bit.

It also means the club loses out on players because there is always a team that will happily pay the wages the players want. Again the theory is commendable - unfortunately the reality is we will struggle to get the upper echelon of players.

...and are we in the frame for Erikson??? and if not...WHY???

Losing Dampsey & Siggurdson and getting Coutinho & Sturridge is one thing...to think we will have the good fortune to repeat this feat is foolish. How many players who we looked at then hesitated only for Spurs or other clubs to snap them up quickly is alarming...if FSG is going to play this game I suggest they sell up. I wanna be loyal to the owners & the manager but we are getting players in on loan, free or low fees/salaries it is getting more ridiculous by the hour  :veryangry
