we havent got the personel to play any other way, in the 70`s if we slung a ball into the box you had the likes of toshack (and after him david johnson) who was a target man CF and kevin keegan who, although small, was like tim cahill in the air, plus you had the likes of ray kennedy arriving from midfield (kennedy started out as a target man CF for arsenal and scored the goals that won the gunners the double in 1971), they were all great in the air.
then around those players you had the likes of terry mcdermott, jimmy case and even phil neal getting in there looking to get on to the end of knockdowns and scraps.
it was the same in the late 80`s, the only time we did have that approach was when we had dalglish and rush up front but they were two once in a lifetime players, dalglish was a creative genius and rush was the greatest goalscorer this club ever had.
we have a manager who doesnt believe in having someone who can get onto the end of crosses, you tell me how we are going to score off a slow build up.
pass our way through a packed and set defence? yeah right.
