Kenny Departs

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I've grown to like Kenny because of all that you tell me and the amount of love and respect you give for Kenny. I haven't been a liverpool supporter long enough or in fact a watcher of football for that matter, to completely appreciate your affection for Kenny.

Bearing that in mind, I've been critical of Kenny's managing decisions from an objective point of view, but as he leaves Liverpool today, I feel pretty sad.
I guess I try to liken your respect for Kenny to my respect for Sachin Tendulkar, he's the only sportsperson who I've grown up watching and having a lot of tremendous affection for, and I would feel gutted if he failed in an endeavour. I'm not saying Kenny has failed us in any way, at all, but I do think we need someone with a better grasp of today's football, and I think that maybe isn't Kenny.

dEVASTATED IS NOT THE WORD , FEEL SICK TO MY STOMACH , looks like another lot of clueless yanks making decisions like were Newcastle or Chelsea,

The next decision they make on who they appoint must be massive for there own sake on the relationship with the fans,

I am shocked and feel very sad about the news today as Kenny Dalglish has provided me with so many happy memories of Liverpool fc since I started supporting in the mid 70's.
He will always be a legend at Liverpool.
However there is little room for sentiment in football today and our American owners have acted with clinical and ruthless efficiency.
I never called for Kenny to go (and was prepared to give him another season) but it looks like the following things counted against him..
1. Premier League - ultimately a poor perfomance with only 6 home league wins all season and fourteen defeats in total. I think the poor second half and downward trend counted against him.
2. Transfer dealings - Comolli paid the price earlier for the perceived poor performance of the big money signings and now Kenny follows suit. Henderson and Downing got plenty of starts after Comolli left which indicates that Kenny picked them. Maxi and Kuyt (players inherited rather than purchased) featured less from the start this season. Unfortunately if you judge Kenny on his signings then it is hard to argue that they were a success. Having said that people quoting a spend of over £100 million are conveniently ignoring significant the money we got back from Torres, Babel and Meireles.
3.Suarez incident - Kenny's public backing of Suarez may have been seen in a less than favourable light. The T Shirt incident was crass and ill advised. It may have been meant solely as a way of backing a player but too many people saw it as some form of supporting racism. Not a good advert for selling LFC shirts in different parts of the world.
4.Media Coverage - whether you like it or not the media coveage will have had some impact. A widespread anti Liverpool bias combined with some journalists harbouring long standing grudges against Kenny probably meant he never got a fair crack of the whip from all elements. Personally I loved Kenny taking the ***** out of journalists and avoiding questions if he wanted to but in today's world that is perceived as negative and insensitive.
It's like a lot of jobs - if you pull in the numbers everything is fine - if not it is a differnt story.
Thanks for some great memories Kenny.

Wowzer I only just heard the news, can't say I'm surprised but I was starting to think they might not sack him. I think it's sad that it didn't work out for Kenny, as I along with everyone else had high hopes, but onwards and upwards, lets get a good manager in and build for the future.

Hi Boxscarf, I apologise unreserveadly mate. I think it may have been D_C who said "excellent" about Fenway's ruthless decision making today. I have spent the last 10 mins trying to find it in this ever lengthening thread  but please accept my sincere apologies.................

I accept your apology, it's not a big deal, I am just a little fed up of being constantly attacked, if it's not Red Beer Goggles, it's Roger Red Hat that's having a pop at me for something or another. I know I have been one of Kenny's biggest critics last season, but I have taken absolutely no pleasure in seeing that man sacked as our manager. Despite my criticisms of Dalglish last season, I fully respect the man as a person, as a manager and as a great custodian for Liverpool football club. He epitomises everything that is special and unique about this football club and he didn't deserve to be sacked. However despite this, I can understand from a business point of view why FSG have chosen to wield the axe at Kenny, even if I feel the decision is premature.

If any of the "true-fans" had all their savings put into the club they would have been as "ruthless" as FSG. That's for sure. FSG gave Kenny thechance and he expressed his gratitude for this, and that made Kenny look good and made him leave with his head held high. Credit to Kenny for this.

Gutted Kenny's gone, I wanted him to get another season because we need stabilty and continuity, that said I can't say I am totally surprised, when you spend that sort of money on players who don't perform and its not like it was just one or two of the new signings it was most of them, then somebodys going to take the blame and Comolli and unfortunately Kenny are the fall guys. Just hope we get a good replacement and he gets a good start otherwise he will be in Hodgsons position and probably be gone by Xmas

it was the right decision though after a terrible season, they really had no choice. It was a really brave call from them and I totally agree that the next manager has to make an immediate impact.

Oh please, stop being so dramatic and look at the league table.
West Brom won for the first time at Anfield since 1967.
We've had the lowest number of wins at home since 1949.
Wigan and Fulham won for the first time at Anfield this season.
Norwich, Fulham, and Blackburn of all teams have scored more goals than us!
We won ONLY 6 games at home this season, and the only team in the top 10 who won as few happens to be WBA.
The only Liverpool player to hit double figures in the league where goals are concerned is Luis Suarez.

Benitez lost his job for finishing 7th. This season, we're on 52 points, which is 11 points lower than Rafa's worst season as Liverpool manager.
And you can say what you want about the number of players Rafa bought BUT (1) he was always quick to sell them if it didn't work out (2) most of the players were for the academy and reserves (3) he made many astute purchases such as Garcia, Alonso, Mascherano, Torres, etc who went on to play such important roles over the seasons they were here.

Kenny was a great manager in the 80s and early 90s but the climate has changed today and fans need to stop living in the past. We have Man City and Chelsea who flex their financial muscles at any promising player, there's Man Utd and Arsenal who are probably 2 of the most successful clubs for the past 20 years. And then there's Spurs who are proving to be credible contenders for an ECL spot. With all these factors combined, what the club needs is a proper manager with European experience who hasn't been in retirement mode for the past 10 years. The purchase of players like Henderson and Downing for such exorbitant prices hasn't done Kenny and DC any good as well. We're struggling to attract top quality players which is why a manager needs to have a good eye in the transfer market. Look at Hyypia for example, what a player he has been at such a low cost.

I'm not advocating for Rafa to return, as the sentimental choices are not always the smartest ones, but we need someone with fresh ideas who can take the club forward.

So we sack him after one full season, which we won our first trophy in 6 years and got to a final? is this what we have become? Do we expect to get instant results even if we spent some money in the summer? What p!ssed me off that we aren't giving anyone a break these days, it's all NOW NOW NOW NOW, how long are we going to give the new one then? another 6 months?

i can assure you I have a very firm grip of reality and also of my emotions and don't let sentiment cloud my judgement, good to see the owners think the same, they gone up a couple of notches in my estimation.

In what way? He didn't exactly coach the team to any great new heights did he. He won't be missed by me.
