Kenny Departs

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Is anyone really surprised? TBH In this day and age when you spend in excess of 100mil in less than 2 years you expect better than an 8th placed finish. I just hope they get the right person in now and we get our signings right in the summer.

Rafa with backing  by FSG would be a good combo imo but I have a feeling it will be Martinez.

I hate the football industries tendency to be knee jerk (might explain why some many idiots on here are the same to be honest) however at least clubs are consistent. Both United and Arsenal will not show the same loyalty to their next managers as Fergie and Wenger have been afforded, that's a fact.

I'm torn over who I want to replace. Benitez got stale here last time but under new owners who actually have a vision he may be able to achieve things. Martinez for me is a risk, a risk not worth taking. If you are going to sack Kenny you must install a manager with some sort of CL track record.

it`s got to be benitez, he got stale but that was because he had to make a profit in the transfer market to pay off the interest on our friggin loans that the other two ***** took out.
he was here 6 seasons and took us to 2 champions league finals and another semi final, plus he finished 2nd in the league.
he`s won more than the likes of martinez, o niell and rodgers put together.
it`s got to be rafa.

Don't want Villas-Boas he's just not cut out for the premiership at the moment.

F.ooksake we are becoming like every other club these days managers at LFC used to be given time now we chop and change managers at a whim they should take the door out of the managers office and put a f.ooking turnstile in It's place. Am fuming 90% of managers in the prem had got to 2 cup finals in a season they would be given freedom of the city. I hope FSG don't ***** this up or we are in for more seasons of misery. As for kenny you will ALWAYS BE THE KING YNWA

Oh please, stop being so dramatic and look at the league table.
West Brom won for the first time at Anfield since 1967.
We've had the lowest number of wins at home since 1949.
Wigan and Fulham won for the first time at Anfield this season.
Norwich, Fulham, and Blackburn of all teams have scored more goals than us!
We won ONLY 6 games at home this season, and the only team in the top 10 who won as few happens to be WBA.
The only Liverpool player to hit double figures in the league where goals are concerned is Luis Suarez.

Benitez lost his job for finishing 7th. This season, we're on 52 points, which is 11 points lower than Rafa's worst season as Liverpool manager.
And you can say what you want about the number of players Rafa bought BUT (1) he was always quick to sell them if it didn't work out (2) most of the players were for the academy and reserves (3) he made many astute purchases such as Garcia, Alonso, Mascherano, Torres, etc who went on to play such important roles over the seasons they were here.

Kenny was a great manager in the 80s and early 90s but the climate has changed today and fans need to stop living in the past. We have Man City and Chelsea who flex their financial muscles at any promising player, there's Man Utd and Arsenal who are probably 2 of the most successful clubs for the past 20 years. And then there's Spurs who are proving to be credible contenders for an ECL spot. With all these factors combined, what the club needs is a proper manager with European experience who hasn't been in retirement mode for the past 10 years. The purchase of players like Henderson and Downing for such exorbitant prices hasn't done Kenny and DC any good as well. We're struggling to attract top quality players which is why a manager needs to have a good eye in the transfer market. Look at Hyypia for example, what a player he has been at such a low cost.

I'm not advocating for Rafa to return, as the sentimental choices are not always the smartest ones, but we need someone with fresh ideas who can take the club forward.

they can fook right off if they think about replacing him with rodgers, martinez or some young up and coming manager who will be way out of their depth.
and are they not setting a precedent here?.surely the next manager will have to improve or else he gets it also.absolute disaster and fenways intentions will become clear with the next appointment.

Rumour has it Steve Clark has gone as well.

Dave Whelan has said that Liverpool have made no approach to sign Roberto Martinez from Wigan.

Extremely harsh and premature decision.... Kenny should have got until Christmas.

Thats the major negative.

On the positive side it shows the owers are ruthless to win (for too long we have been nicey nicey... "give people time"... accepting mediocrity). I also think another major factor behind this decision is that Kenny was never their manager.

The big thing now is the successor... they have to get this right.

F*cking disgrace the way they handled this. In fact, the entire thing is a farce making us all look like a bunch of kunts. No doubt some in the media will be w@nking themselves silly about now, laughing at how they've been proven correct. On the other hand, I'm not terribly surprised either. The FA Cup was the thing that made the axe fall. Once Kenny and the Yank didn't shake hands, that was it. Writing was on the wall. Sick of these w@nkers with suits sh*tting all over who we are and what we are about...or used to be about. Again, I'm disgusted, but not shocked. Rafa is available, willing and knows this club and what it stands for. Get him in FSG, or you can f*ck right off.

I'm holding out for McLeish, that should get rid of 7_Kewell and D_C once and for all.

Mcleish was actually one of 7_kewell's post-Rafa picks along with another of his favourites, Hodgson. This is to say nothing of Owen Coyle, a man many on here touted as the next big thing not so long ago. Be careful what you wish for, Heimdallers.

I think this is a massive call by FSG. It seemed to me the sensible decision to give Kenny another season to see if he could rectify his mistakes. Yes, there was much reason to be concerned given the signings, the performances particularly towards the end of the season and our league finish, but in my opinion there was still enough reason to stick with him and allow him the time to learn and make the changes necessary to get us back where we belong. It certainly didn't feel to me like the end of the road or that all hope was lost, as it did for example under Hodgson. It makes me wonder whether FSG would have kept Kenny on if we had won the FA cup?  Any decision of this magnitude should be taken on broad basis with the long-term in mind, so I would hope that the answer was no.

As it is, with this likely being the last time Kenny will ever manage LFC, a lot of us will be left wondering what might have been. We will probably never know whether Kenny could have delivered the success we all crave, a success that would've been all the more sweeter because of his connection with the club. Whoever is his successor will have that hanging over him and also presumably be expected to achieve a top four finish in his first season or face a similar fate to Kenny. The risk is that if we are too hasty we will never have the stability needed to build a successful team. Others will argue that our faith in Kenny was misplaced and that we heading for instability anyway but I don't see how you could be so sure of that. But then that comes as no surprise as these are the same people who were sure that the likes of Mcleish and Hodgson were apt choices for the job.
