Personally I think its poor for a side that goes into every tournament with a large section of their fanbase and media expecting to win it.

Also, QF or better sounds good until you look at it from the point of view that they have only made 2 semis, one of which was with home advantage.

Also during that time Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Greece and, God forbid, THE FRENCH have all won major tournaments  :D

but to be fair the cold facts dont tell the full story.
in 82 (and throughout the 70`s) there was a wierd system in place with group stages that led straight to semi finals, it wasnt a knock out type system so there were no QF`s etc, in 82 the england side did well, they never lost a game, they comfortably beat eventual semi finalists france (platini et al) 2-0, drew with eventual finalists west germany and drew with hosts spain but went out on some strange co-efficient thing.
in 70 they lost in the QF`s to west germany but were many peoples favourites to win the tournament after their performance against brazil, england were a bit unlucky, first just before the QF they lost their keeper gordon banks to food poisoning but despite that they dominated germany and cruised to a 2-0 lead. with 10 minutes left ramsey decided to save bobby charltons legs (charlton was giving beckenbauer the run around) because the game was played in a mexican heatwave and took him off.
with charlton off the pitch germany gained momentum and got a couple of soft goals that chelsea keeper peter bonetti took the blame for, they eventually won in extra time, it was germanys first ever win against england.
that england side was brilliant and pele himself said in his autobiography that the sense of relief that went right through the brazil camp when england went out was palpable.
england have genuinely been unlucky in a few tournaments, 86 was another one.

Of course there are (and have been) quality English/British players.. but the problem is the very top nations produce far more top players than here which means there are very few worth buying, hence the need to look abroad for better.

If we are to buy English/British players then they have to be the best.. and given that there are so few that means the pool is very very small. Man U gobbled up the two quality players in the market last year in Young and Jones.

There are no English/British players on the market, bar Gareth Bale, who would make us better/challenge top 4. Therefore we have to look beyond. The mistake Comolli (and Kenny) made was not doing so, and as a result they expanded the average load on the squad and made us worse. From Torres to Carroll, from Meireles to Henderson/Adam. Inspite of some dodgy buys themselves (Rafa with Keane, Houllier with Heskey, Diouf, Diao, Cheyrou) they have been in a different league to Kenny as regards bringing quality players in. No manager in our history has squandered so much as Kenny and in record time. His one true class signing is Suarez, and the one decent signing is Enrique. He (and Comolli) made a huge error in bringing in players to cater to Carroll, ripping up the progress he had made in his first six months. This season has been a direct result of his (and Comolli's) bizarre strategy. He failed massively and at huge cost.

i just think there`s a general lack of respect for not just english players but british and irish players in general and whenever i hear that disrespect the phrase that springs to mind is `sky generation`.
in the 70`s and 80`s english teams dominated europe with sides made up almost entirely of british and irish players, and it wasnt just one club having a good run, it wasnt just liverpool (infact we were quite late to the european party, british sides like chelsea, newcastle, leeds, man united, man city, celtic, spurs, arsenal and even west ham all won a european trophy before we did).
it wasnt just in the 70`s and 80`s either, the actual idea of a european cup came about in the 50`s when a french journalist watched the english champions wolves beat european superpowers honved (puskas et al) and real madrid and he asked `is there any club in europe that could defeat wolves?`
the reason british players dont look as effective these days is that the game has changed, for over 100 years the game was a physical sport but now its not, the british have been slow in adapting to the change in the rules but that doesnt mean they wont get there eventually.
i remember seeing a manchester united side when they were in their wilderness years knock barcelona with maradona in their side out of europe, in the past continental sides found it very hard to deal with the power and aggressiveness of even average british teams.
i dont think there`s another nation that has achieved so much in the game but their players get so little respect.

To bad we dont live in the 70's or 80s or even in the 50's anymore eh?

Perhaps we should have great respect for hungarian football players since they dominated in the 50's as well. Lets fill the team up with more hungarians.

I would chuck every penny we have at Javi Martinez

Having him, and Lucas, in central midfield, we would contend for everything. We have yet to replace Xabi Alonso.. and Javi Martinez would do.

In:
Nigel De Jong - he's a beast and would be a good replacement for Masch. This would allow Lucas more creative licence. I can envisage a 4-2-3-1

Adam Johnson/James Milner/Aaron Lennon - English, all love to get forward and would work beautifully in a triumpherate with downing/suarez and gerrard

Promotions:

Sterling - bench
Morgan - bench
Ngoo - if Carroll gets injured

We don't need a massive overhaul this summer, just 2 or 3 players of quality.  I say 'just' as if it's easy, clearly it won't be.

Adam Johnson and Clint Dempsey are the two Premiership based players I'd look at.  Johnson will have his league winners medal and hopefully will be ready to move on and get more regular football elsewhere.  Dempsey, even at the age of almost 30, would be a good signing.  Proven quality in this league, scores goals, very professional and good attitude.  Surely he'd be tempted by a move to us and our owners I'm sure would be keen as he'd help raise the club's profile in the U.S.

I'd also keep an eye on Robben's contract situation at Bayern and I'd look to the Dutch or South American leagues for a good striker.  Maybe De Jong from FC  Twente could be an option, not seen much of him personally but scoring record is good.

The likes of Erikson and Hazard are probably out of our reach but you never know.

We need a striker and a winger really.  De Jong could be a really good shout for striker, and Kagawa or Erik Lamela as a winger.

Martinez is a more effective center back than he is a defensive midfielder.

I would rather go for Mario Suarez in left central defensive midfielder. He was phenomenal today in the europa league final as he has been most of the season. Its almost impossible to press him, with quick feet and quick thinking...scores a few goals too...
Floyd stepped left and threw the hook that caught Hatton flush under the chin. Finally, the British champ had arrived in that mythical place of which his fans speak: Hatton Wonderland.

Nonsense. Hes filled in at central defence since mid March due to Bilbao's injury crisis. Hes actually not a defensive mid either.

Javi Martinez is a deep sitting midfield playmaker who specialises in bursting forward as well as spraying 40/50 yard passes with unerring accuracy. He ran the game at Old Trafford this season. Hes 6 '3, mobile, great tackling, great passing, excellent in the air, tireless worker. He would be the engine of the team and a replacement for Alonso.

I agree with Kerry, Martinez is best suited in midfield and he would be perfect for our midfield. But I doubt we'll get him. When was the last time Bilbao sold their best players? Even if they do agree on letting him go, it won't be cheep.

After a player has been corrupted by City's mega spending I don't think we can match or improve their wages here!

That applies to:

De Jong
Adam Johnson
Adebayor ..and any other players who have been through their system.

We need to spend what little money we will have a lot smarter than what City does not to mention what we have done recently!

We took Bellamy from them. We can probably match anyone in the league in terms of wages. Plus Johnson will want to leave he isn't playing and isn't getting any younger. So he will probably push for a transfer and can't see him going abroad.

I'd be over the moon if we signed Adam as I think he's creativity and movement is up there with the best of them

Adam Johnson wont leave City having signed a new contract not long back
and no doubt on big coin. Forget the City players they will stay there on
big contracts with a successful team.

What we need to do is get shut of the under perfomers and non contributers
and replace them with young hungry footballers from outside the UK where
there is real value if your smart.

I will be glued to this window because its massive for us and no more mistakes
can be made in the transfer market.

We need to use our budget and sales/wage save money to buy half a dozen
talented young foreign players to PLAY in this team alongside the best
half dozen we have in this team right now, and let it grow through pre and
early season into a proper unit.

GOALS, players than can score goals, that would be my message, goals from
midfield, from wide areas, from strikers and PACE, all these lads must be
quick and mobile.

They are out there, tons of them, and Liverpool have to find them starting NOW
before someone else does.

Johnson wont be happy sitting on the bench every week at city and watching his england oppurtunites pass by whilst the likes of downing who is half the player gets called upon.

I think Johnson will leave city this season. If he comes to us is another issue.
