"Liverpool's Premier League form has been utterly absymal in 2012 and plenty of critics, rival fans and even Kopites themselves have suggested Kenny Dalglish isn't up to the task, but here are five reasons why we think the Scot should be cut some slack. For now…
1. IT'S TOO EARLY TO PASS FINAL JUDGEMENT
If a manager is appointed, unless he is a catastrophic failure he should be given two full seasons to prove his worth. It takes time to get things right and Dalglish inherited a dog's dinner at Anfield, largely created by Hicks and Gillett, with a dash of Benitez and Hodgson. Alex Ferguson finished 11th, 2nd, 11th, 13th and sixth in his first five seasons at Old Trafford, while he overhauled a club that hadn't won a league title for over two decades. In this day and age Dalglish had no chance of being given that amount of time to turn things round, but one full season in charge is not enough.
2. THIS SEASON CAN STILL BE A MAJOR SUCCESS
At the start of this season Liverpool had a chance to win three trophies, one of which was the Premier League and, let's be honest, that was never going to happen. They have won the League Cup, beating Chelsea and Man City on the way, and are in the FA Cup semi-final. Right now, few would back them to win it, but if they do that will be two out of three trophies in the cabinet. Yes, Champions League qualification is what matters most to the owners because it brings in the big bucks, but fans want glory, not fourth place. Two trophies in a season is success by any Premier League club's standards, including Manchester United.
3. LIVERPOOL AREN'T FAR OFF BEING A MUCH BETTER TEAM
No excuses, Liverpool deserve to be where they are in the Premier League and the results have been poor. There is light at the end of the tunnel, however, because in many of the matches in which the Reds have dropped points, they could so easily have got a different result. People will argue that you can say exactly the same about any club, but that's simply not true, because the stats show Liverpool have hit the woodwork more often, missed more penalties and wasted an alarmingly high number of clear cut chances (third highest in the league, last time we checked). They are not being played off the park without creating chances. Something is wrong at Anfield, but just as pundits say of misfiring strikers that they should worry when they aren't getting chances, far more than when they miss them, so too Liverpool can take solace in these dark days that they aren't as bad as their sharpest critics suggest.
4. HE IS THE SPIRIT OF LIVERPOOL
Kenny Dalglish is Liverpool through and through - he knows what makes the club and its supporters tick better than anyone. From the youth team players to the senior squad via the tea lady, the man lives and breathes Liverpool Football Club and no one will be more disappointed with the current run of league form than Dalglish himself. Because he was such a successful figure in Liverpool's past, with results not going well this year the accusation persists that he is a throwback who belongs in a bygone era, but equally Dalglish's experience of those glory years mean that he won't tolerate failure for long, starting with himself.
5. FSG NEED HIS EXPERIENCE
Liverpool's American owners are new to football - their expertise lies in making money and running American sports franchises. Football is literally a different ball game and Dalglish's 40 years of experience and track record of success should not be dimissed lightly, certainly not off the back of a poor run of results. Damien Comolli may have impressed John Henry, but Dalglish has forgotten more about football than the Frenchman will probably ever know and the club's owners are fortunate to have his knowledge to call upon as they go about trying to make Liverpool a force again."
