ROY HODGSON - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Ok he totally changed his tactics for the game at the weekend but the question is, will he keep it like that? I'm not holding my breath. I expect us to revert to type on Sunday and be completely negative again.

If he wants to see the tide turning in regards to garnering a modicum of belief from the fans ...then I am sure he now knows which blueprint to follow ..... if he doesn't make a concerted effort to do this ,then he obviously cant  place great importance on building an affinity with the match going fans .....surely that is without question ...... from my own perspective the niggly jibes directed at  reporters at press conferences has to cease ....the Danish and Norwegian comments were not the type of comments you expect from someone associated with Liverpool Football Club .... he needs to keep his head in interviews with the media and not react with such at times disdainful sound bites ...

here's my take on the game last Sunday...

When we played Everton we had 2 days previous just gone through the mire with regards to the owners saga. On the Friday it all got resolved and on the Sunday we we're at Everton. My reckoning is that the players were still been left a bit in the dark about the direction of the club. Then, once NESV or whoever had time to lay down the plans and reassure the players one by one that this club was going to go in the right direction, the players responded with the type of performance that they pulled out against Blackburn. I think during the course of the week inbetween the Everton game and the Blackburn game, the players learnt a lot about the future.

just my thoughts

"I don't think we can play a lot better than we did against Blackburn," said the manager.

"With the team we have at the moment, if people expect us to really play a lot better football than we did for 70 minutes at the start of the Blackburn game they are going to be asking a lot.

"What could happen is we could get a lot more goals for that performance but I don't think we could play better.

It's comments like these that continue to undermine Mr Hodgson..  :shift:

Why do "comments like this continue to undermine Mr Hodgson" though Zara, I don't get it. He's saying we played just about to the optimum of our ability, and considering we could have conceiveably been three or four in front by half time, what's the problem with that?

Clearly the bunch of players Roy was left with/has ended up with after he has bought and sold a few isn't good enough to win the league so what's the point in pretending it is?

I must confess far from "comments like this" undermining Hodgson, it's posters who continue to deleve into what he's said for hidden meanings, signs of weakness or an excuse to put the boot in which continue to undermine him. He was roundly criticised last week for:

Having a glass of wine and smiling in a hotel bar the day before we played Napoli ("he should be fecking working out how we are going to beat Blackburn").

He was rounded upon because he explained that he wasn't going to play Kelly against Blackburn as he preferred to go with more experience in such an important match, ("he should learn to keep his fecking mouth shut").

He was pilloried for saying he would never resign from Liverpool ("he should feck off now and maintain some dignity").

It was stated while we were beating Blackburn that it didn't matter as Roy is a "load of fecking sh!t".

He was called a "buffoon" because he selected the team which eventually put in our best performance of the season, a "twaaaaaat" for not going with Kelly, and it was stated that he "shouldn't be allowed inside the city of Liverpool".

Since the game, we've heard that if we don't beat BOTH OF BOLTON AND CHELSEA, Roy should "feck off anyway".

Now, because he's saying we played just about as well as we can play for 70 minutes, we're told that he is undermining himself.

My contention is that he isn't undermining "himself" at all. There is plenty of undermining going on, but it aint the manager who's doing it.

The problem is Mick on each issue you refer to there you are using the most extreme anti-Roy example of what people have said. Zara is a fairly 'moderate objector' from what I have seen and I think the comment she makes above is moderate also.

I don't agree with the things you have quoted above, quite frankly some are ridiculous imo but I do agree that while Roy continually presents us as a 'small club' it does not display the kind of mentality that we need and as Zara says these kind of comments do continue to undermine him. Not because people choose to read into them that way, but because comment after comment can be interpreted in this way.

He would have been better to say something like "The players played well against Blackburn but I know that is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what they can achieve and as always we will be working hard on the training pitch to get to where we know we can be."

Arsene Wenger has been saying for the last I don't know how many years that his young players are capable of winning the league. Last season Rafa promised 4th place from a long way out, although later admitted that as manager he had to show confidence in the players and I agree any manager should do this, not just can them off and say the first good performance is as good as they can be.

Let's be fair though, Sunday was a big step in the right direction on the pitch and surely we didn't expect Roy to completely change overnight. Hopefully should they decide to stick with him (which incidentally I still hope they don't) NESV will give Roy intensive some positive thinking tuition & instill that winning mentality he needs!

Not meaning to 'russian doll' this one - but I like you Mash  :;):

You know what, if we played Chelsea and he made the comments.. ok, but for gawds-sake we played 'Blackburn' ahead of us on GD  :lookaround - it implies we shall be hovering where we are folks ..

.. from being a team capable of being top 4-6, and Mick you were a big advocate of that (yes with all being fit etc).. you are now agreeing with the managers comments re: 'that's yer lot folks..' and against a Blackburn team , missing its 'key players'.. I am worried if that is what the 'manager' is advocating.

..therefore such comments do nothing to help RH's position -  some have questioned who was 'responsible' for that performance? Players or Manager... I was hoping the manager instilled some belief,  re-thought tactically and shuffled 'the pack' and put Gerrard in his favoured place etc etc.. and the team clicked !.. instead after a good performance and result .. looks like it's the max i'm afraid - we shall be hovering where we are ppl.. cos their ain't no-more from this 'lot'  :sniffle

I would put it more to Everton being a far better team than bottom feeder Blackburn who hasn't won a game since opening day.

Did the players not read the news on friday or sat ? the ownership was sorted the friday before the derby - the new owner was actually at the derby - everything was sorted so why not a performance at the derby ?

Its simple - the set up against everton was wrong - against blackburn it was correct

Do whatever you want , when the team is playing is when the team needs our support . What happens in between has no bearing on the game or results .

Because the manager should be saying things like "we played well but we can play better". He seems easily pleased tbf.

And FWIW I don't buy into this "the mess he was left with nonsense". He didn't inherit a team that was battling relegation. Quite the opposite he got a team that almost won the league and ended the season with a records points finish. I'm sure plenty of managers would have wanted to be left with similar 'bunches of players'. And he has added a few players of his own so it's not like he hasn't had a say in things either. I think people are clinging onto this Rafa's team nonsense too much. If you really want to keep banging on about it should we really credit the Blackburn result to Rafa?

Also I think he undermined himself plenty when making comments about SOS protests or the future of Fernando Torres, or better yet - Frank Rijkaard.

Thing that get's me , is that apparently rafa was sacked because he had a team capable of competeing for the league if not win it and underachieved. Fair enough you may say ,but said team is now in 18 in the league and it's because rafa left roy with a pile of sh!te. Either the team was /is good enough and it's the managers fault there underperforming or the team wasn't that good anyway and the last manager somewhat over achieved considering his resources. Which it be?

I disagree
That would suggest that the mood of supporters before a game has no effect on the players, manager or the match. If people are angry, frustrated, pi'ssed off or annoyed as they are going in to watch the match then this can dictate how they behave during the match. If there is a feeling of dissilusionment and despair amongst fans then this can affect the atmosphere and therefore the result (think 12th man).
Fans talk constantly before and after the match about every aspect of every part of the club and if there is enough of a popular opinion, whether it is correct or not then this can convince people about a certain issue and therefore influence their thinking and viewpoint. This then gets passed on and grows until it almost becomes "fact"
If only life was as simple as you make out.
