He would have been better to say something like "The players played well against Blackburn but I know that is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what they can achieve and as always we will be working hard on the training pitch to get to where we know we can be."

Absolutly spot on.

Personally, 98% of my concern has to do with what goes on out on the pitch and 2% goes to comments in press scrums, gestures from sidelines and the like.  I used to get quite bored with the irrelevant jabs directed at Rafa (jokes about his English and other eccentricities with the press, the whinges about him not celebrating when we score, etc.) and I find the same sorts of things swirling around Roy.  Sure, I wish he'd be a bit more measured with his comments on big issues like selling Torres but I don't see too much to froth at the mouth about in most of his comments.  Let's face it, if he gets us playing like we did against Blackburn on a consistent basis he can spend entire press conferences singing show tunes and I'd be fine with it. :D

"I don't think we can play a lot better than we did against Blackburn," said the manager.

"With the team we have at the moment, if people expect us to really play a lot better football than we did for 70 minutes at the start of the Blackburn game they are going to be asking a lot.

"What could happen is we could get a lot more goals for that performance but I don't think we could play better.

It's comments like these that continue to undermine Mr Hodgson..  :shift:

Why do "comments like this continue to undermine Mr Hodgson" though Zara, I don't get it. He's saying we played just about to the optimum of our ability, and considering we could have conceiveably been three or four in front by half time, what's the problem with that?

Clearly the bunch of players Roy was left with/has ended up with after he has bought and sold a few isn't good enough to win the league so what's the point in pretending it is?

I must confess far from "comments like this" undermining Hodgson, it's posters who continue to deleve into what he's said for hidden meanings, signs of weakness or an excuse to put the boot in which continue to undermine him. He was roundly criticised last week for:

Having a glass of wine and smiling in a hotel bar the day before we played Napoli ("he should be fecking working out how we are going to beat Blackburn").

He was rounded upon because he explained that he wasn't going to play Kelly against Blackburn as he preferred to go with more experience in such an important match, ("he should learn to keep his fecking mouth shut").

He was pilloried for saying he would never resign from Liverpool ("he should feck off now and maintain some dignity").

It was stated while we were beating Blackburn that it didn't matter as Roy is a "load of fecking sh!t".

He was called a "buffoon" because he selected the team which eventually put in our best performance of the season, a "twaaaaaat" for not going with Kelly, and it was stated that he "shouldn't be allowed inside the city of Liverpool".

Since the game, we've heard that if we don't beat BOTH OF BOLTON AND CHELSEA, Roy should "feck off anyway".

Now, because he's saying we played just about as well as we can play for 70 minutes, we're told that he is undermining himself.

My contention is that he isn't undermining "himself" at all. There is plenty of undermining going on, but it aint the manager who's doing it.

Last season Rafa promised 4th place from a long way out, although later admitted that as manager he had to show confidence in the players and I agree any manager should do this, not just can them off and say the first good performance is as good as they can be.

And we all know what happened there dont we...?
:eyebrow

Maybe Roy is using reverse psychology saying they cant get any better so that they will prove him wrong when they are?

Manuel Pellegrini claims he has been approached by Liverpool and admits that he would welcome a chance to replace Roy Hodgson.

Hodgson is hoping that Sunday's win over Blackburn Rovers can act as a springboard for an resurgence, with his position at Anfield now under serious threat just three months into the job following the club's worst start to a domestic campaign since 1953.

Pellegrini is hopeful of returning to management by the end of the year after being dismissed by Real in May and would prefer a move to the Premier League, citing the Reds' Spanish contingent as a key motivation if he did succeed Hodgson.

He said: "Yes, Liverpool contacted me.

"It is a great club with many Spanish players who I already know, and it is my intention to work in the Premier League.

"I had lots of offers, some that I like. Ideally, I would like to find a club in December."

The thing I don't get is that for me I don't think for one minute we've completely turned the corner. Am I ultra confident we'll beat Bolton? No I'm not to be honest, I think we've got a chance but winning will be difficult. Given that, the bovver boot crew aren't going to have to wait too long for their next session of giving Roy a good kicking (we play Chelsea after Bolton FFS after all) so why not just bide your time and leave the manager alone for a few days.

As I've said a few times now, even if you want him out you want whoever replaces him to have a chance when he comes in, and to that end it'll be far easier if we are mid table rather than at the bottom.

Just a wee bit of respect for at least the institution of the manager of Liverpool FC wouldn't go amiss, even if some can't muster any for the man himself.

Thats the oint though. From where we were it was always likely to turn out like that but you overstate you players chances, not put a ceiling on them. I almost didnt put the rafa point in because i knew some small minded poster would focus soley on that bit. Notice how you ignored that Wenger does it every year.

As for the reverse psychology, you are clutchibg at straws thre or more likely taking the p1ss.

Do whatever you want , when the team is playing is when the team needs our support . What happens in between has no bearing on the game or results .

Your opinion is that overstating is a good thing. Fair enough. I call it bullsh'itting which is what Benitez did last season and, as you say Wenger has done for the last five or six?
Im not clutching at straws as we dont know whether Roy meant it as a challenge to the players or not. As for taking the pi'ss, I am no different from the others who do the same on here.
