ROY HODGSON - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I think before Hodgson took over people were saying give him eight or so games to see how he fairs before passing judgement. Well we are at that stage and we have had the worst start to a season in living memory! I was one who thought Hodgson was a shrewd move by the club to steady the ship in choppy waters but unfortunately he is taking us towards stormier seas.

I know he hasn't been given the cash to spend but the players he has bought look woeful. They haven't added to the dynamic of the team and we are struggling. The question is what to do from now to the transfer window? I would like to see Gerrard play in the middle of the park alongside one other, take your pick they all seem much of a muchness, but a possible answer might be to play Agger there. Cole should play off Torres in the old Beardsley role. Babel should be given his chance instead of the static play of Maxi. Johnson could play as a midfielder and we could leave Carragher as the main right back. It's tricky but there are possible variants on the way we are set up at the moment. What frustrated me on Sunday was that Hodgson didn't change the way we played earlier when it was clear to any reasonably savvy person that a change was needed. If his real judgement is that we played well on Sunday then he is nothing short of deluded and one has to question whether he is the man to lead us out of relegation into mid table safety. That speaks for itself really!

There is no doubt whatsoever that we have problems on the pitch. I believe its both the managers and the players responsibility. If the players are not responding, sulking, underperforming and generally disinterested then the manager cannot do anything and simply must go. Thats the way it is Im afraid.
Saying that, it wont make those that want him gone or never wanted him in the first place right. It will just mean that he hasnt had time to turn things round and we will never know if he could have.

I don't agree Thommo, I think the people who said they didn't want him as he wasn't up to it are currently been proven right. Those of us who thought he was man enough to arrest the tailspin Benitez had plunged us into were unfortunately wrong it seems.

I never had a problem with people saying they thought the manager wasn't up to it, it was the disrespect and abuse he got and is getting which I find a bit hartd to take.

They were right though, it looks like he isn't up to it. So steep is the plunge we had embarked upon under Benitez, it is going to take a good manager and a fair few quid to arrest it.

The squad in the end was massively unbalanced and after 6 seasons despite the financial constraints due to our scumbag owners - it was Rafa's squad. He built it and the buck does stop with him.

That was the key with Rafa, for me.  Yes, there's the one bad season argument but his transfers were replacing too many solid players with weaker players each window.

Crouch and Bellamy --> Keane and Voronin
Riise -->  Dossena
Momo --> Lucas
Alonso --> Aquilani

etc .etc.

Unfortunately, in terms of the squad strength we were going backwards and that suggested that more bad seasons would follow.

Not only that, but his decisions were a disgrace at times.

People keep going on about how we nearly won the Prem a couple of seasons ago. But, to me I remember that as the Premiership chance the Benitez blew largely by making wrong headed decisions.

Hauling Keane off nearly every game he was in, when no credible replacement was on the bench. It's not outside the realms of possibility that he could have kncoked in 1 or 2 more goals and transformed one of those boring 0-0's or 1-1's into wins. That would have been enough to clinch it.

Bizarre team setups.

Playing far too conservately and putting shackles on the team, which when lifted, helped the team perform wonderfully in the closing stages of the season, slaughtering Real and Utd etc.

Refusing to move out of his robotic "Rafa 1.0" substitution routine

Alienating players in petty squabbles.

...and that rant at Christmas, while not soley responsible for our screw up that year, certainly had an impact, on proceedings that's for sure.

People were saying he did great to get us to 2nd spot, I was thinking you had it in your hands and you blew it, you twat.

Really?  You're really gonna blame Rafa for finishing second in the league with our record points tally?  In a season were Gerrard and Torres only started around 22 games on the field together and we beat Chelsea and the Mancs home and away.

Thats shocking.  The guy really never did have a chance with some fans.

Interesting, despite my post giving people the chance to reflect on the bigger picture, people still want to twist the knife into both the team and the manager. So at least the fans are being consistant.

No the stats get brought out when people go well we where sh,ite last season, yes we where but nothing like we are seeing now.

If people stop brining last season and rafa up people wouldnt feel the need to defend Rafa.

Roys here now the topic is about Roy yet some people just cant get that hatred of rafa out of their system so mention him at every opportunity, and as long as they continue to do so me and others will continue to prove them wrong.

In fairness to the mods, I can only assume that my post about the results immediately before Hodgson took over was deleted by mistake. It was of course relevent to Hodgson in that it helps form an opinion of how much of the tailspin is due to the current manager and how much of it was already underway before he got here.

Anyway, in our last 13 matches last season we got 19 points. We lost against Man Utd, Lost against Arsenal, Lost against Chelsea, while we drew with Fulham (bare with me I'm going from memory here), drew with Birmingham, beat Pompey, beat Sunderland, beat West Ham, drew with Hull, I think we beat Blackburn was it?

Anyway, we got 19 points in the previous 13 league matches before Roy took over. He'll not match that return now, which confirms he has been unsuccessful in arresting the tailspin we were already in.
