ROY HODGSON - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Redangel » Fri Sep 24, 2010 9:24 am

Right , I was one who thought after the disgrace that was Wednesday night that Roy had to go. It was a completely knee jerk reaction to a humiliating defeat , and I was much more rational by Thursday morning.
While I agree we need to get behind Roy and have faith he can turn it around , it is very difficult when you see the Liverpool manager sitting on the bench with his head in his hands while his team are getting beaten by a League2 team !!
So Roy has got to play his part. We need him to give us and the players confidence that he can do it.
The players all look to be lacking confidence at the  moment and Roy has to convince them that they can be World beaters. Just like Shanks used to do.
He also needs to back his players , it has not gone unnoticed in the press that he did not back Torres when Fergie called him a cheat. That in my book was a big mistake.
Roy has a huge task on his hands , of that there is no doubt , but those who appointed him thought he was up to the job, didn't they!!!

I don't think you have to "have faith", because if you haven't got it you can't make yourself have it. I got that sh!t for years, "have faith" or "believe, believe, believe" depending on who was posting it. Clearly if you didn't think Roy was up to the job in the first place, you won't have seen much so far to make you alter your point of view, that much is a given. So I'm not going to waste my time to time telling people to have faith or to believe, it's pointless.

That said, once you've made clear the fact that you didn't/don't think Roy is up to the job, you might as well sit back at that point and see what happens rather than getting yourself all in a tizz because we lost 3-2 at Old Trafford. Reminding people every day that you never wanted to get rid of the previous manager in the first place, or you never wanted this one is utterly pointless it seems to me.

The press and media are now predictably rounding on our club, the feeding frenzy has begun and to my mind it's high time Liverpool supporters actually closed ranks and got in behind the team and manager. If when push comes to shove Roy isn't up to it, then fair enough, but I'd much prefer it if we as a club make a call rather than SKY TV, and that we do it in our own time as well.

Roy is a gentleman, a football man and he deserves respect from Liverpool fans while he is the Liverpool manager. All this Woy nonsense was only the start it seems.

I know the crowd have a point to make on Saturday and fair enough. I really hope thoughj that when the time comes they make it known in no uncertain terms that they are fully behind the players AND manager. The time has come to put all pettiness aside.

Agree on most of that mick , but the protest on saturday is long over due and that's more important than roy or the team imo . Roy will have to wait i'm afraid until we get rid of the real problem at our club .

Look, i don't think any Liverpool fan wants to see Roy fail.  Come May, we want to be competing in the FA Cup final, Europa League final and grabbing that 4th spot.  Liverpool fans are among the best in the world and although we're demanding.. we can also be very rewarding.

But Roy needs to throw us a bone.  Its a two way street.  He needs to start backing his players more often in public.  And as someone else said, he needs to be more proactive and focus on how he wants us to play instead of just sitting deep.  He needs to start treating us like we're Liverpool, a big club with ambition.  He should have higher expectations when we play the likes of Birmingham.

He will get support, but he needs to earn it.  I understand fans getting frustrated when the tactics stink and all he can do is sit there with his head in his hands.

I want Roy to be a success, but at the moment all i see is a man that hasn't got a clue what he is doing.  The next 2 games are now huge.  i want to see us win both. but i also want us to create more chances and actually have some posession.

No bother with any of that Igor, I totally agree with the protest and its aims.

Does anyone else find his press comments a bit uninspiring? I know it's not particularly important, but whilst Benitez was frustrating in repeating himself at least he spoke like the manager of a big club. Roy still sounds like Fulham manager saying 'I hope we play our best, whether that is good enough to beat United is another matter' etc

Very frustrating!  After Birmingham he said "I wasn't expecting much anyways".
Before City he said "i hope they don't put 6 past us".
He said Northampton would be "Formidable opponents".

If only that were true. It is much more important these days to be able to say "I told you so".

A few points.
1. Roy succeeding. Mick is absolutely right:
"Yes we aren't playing well, yes yesterday was a disaster, and yes we are all twitchy. I'll tell you this though, the media are feeding off the forums, hoping we'll become another Newcastle. Not only that, but ironically if Roy fails it will enable them to have another go at Benitez, say he left behind a load of sh!t etc etc. Others can please themselves, but I'm not buying into it. We have been poor for a long time and it's Roy's job to try and change it. Of course I'm concerned that when push comes to shove he might not be up to it, but he deserves a chance to give it a go. Five league matches is not a chance, it's not even a snapshot. We aren't Newcastle and we don't get rid of managers after a few matches. If we go down that route then we really are fecked. Those who keep going on about his deficiencies and giving him til xmas have lost the plot. If he goes at xmas then we are well and truly fu'cked because there is NO-ONE of any stature who will take on such a poison chalice."
Be careful what you wish for...(Mon my ar'se!)

2. What Roy knew. I dont agree with Nan:
"He knew what hes was getting into , he knew what he was taking on before he came here "
Its one thing hearing about whats gone on in a club. Its quite another to actually be in there and find out the true extent of whats gone on. Roy may well have had some knowledge but he has only truly found out by being there. And to be honest I think hes sh'it himself when hes seen the state were in. He probably thought he had to clmb Ben Nevis but hes now realised its Everest.

3. What he needs to do. I agree with Barrett, especially:
"Make more positive public pronouncements"
Roy has got to take he bull by the horns and come out fighting. The players are on the floor confidence-wise and with no natural leader they need the Manager to tell them, and the world, that we are up for the fight. He now has to accept he has got the hardest job in football, roll his sleeves up and start swinging.
The negativity of certain supporters will, ironically be one of the hardest battles he has. They can help by stopping the constant whinging and by backing him and he can do his part by proving them wrong.

Were in this together guys. For better or worse, richer or poorer, till death do we part.
Otherwise its "Come on the Toon..."

I do agree with you on giving Roy a chance to sort out the mess, I think he has taken a big job at LFC, but I think he is capable of doing a good job, if he is given that time to do it. Let us be fair on him.
Thank you

sadly, some on here do. I honestly believe that some posters are hoping we'll get relegated, just so they can say "i told you so, i told you so, i told you so"   :(

martin oneill has his faults i know. But least hes more attack minded than roy and rafa. Its just a matter of time before he takes over. Roy got it all wrong in the transfer window and is to defensive in my opinion.

The only thing Roy didn't do in the transfer market was to sign another striker. He signed Meireles, Cole Jones and Poulsen. So in fairness, he didn't get it all wrong.
