I remember people saying almost exactly that when Xabi left for Real.

No they didn't at all, Everyone could sympathise with Xabi Alonso because the way he was publicly treated by Benitez in his attempt to get Barry

If that was said and Torres believed it then he would have to be pretty naive.

Ok ben why do you think Torres stayed?

Simply because he wanted to.

But only a few months ago he was saying he would like to see 4 or 5 quality players signed.
Not to be harsh on the new signings... but they aint top drawer.

IF the sale goes through before October then there will be a war chest either in January or the following summer.

I am confident it is the pending sale of the club that has convinced both Torres and Gerrard to stay.

Agreed, me too.

Im just worried about the potential consequences should a new owner fail to materialise.

Ok ben why do you think Torres stayed?

I'll answer that one. I think it's a few things.

1/ With the exception of last season he has enjoyed his time at LFC. whilst he hasn't won any trophies he has played in (and won) big games in front of some amazing crowds (home and away).

2/ The fans love him as much as they loved him at Atleti.

3/ We're a similar club to Athletico in many ways plus he seems to enjoy living in the city.

4/ He is having a relationship with Steven Gerrard! Keeping Stevie was key to keeping Torres. I've never known two players to kiss each others :censored: as much as these two!

5/ Where would he go? We have got a bit lucky on this respect. Can you see him at Real? He strikes me as a loyal young lad, I don't think he wants to do anything to destroy the high esteem he is held in at his former club. Can you see him at City? at Chelsea? Maybe if we have another mare of a season but I imagine he'd prefer to play abroad. So that leaves Barca who (fortunately for us) spent their money on David Villa and spanked the rest on Ibrahimovich last season.

So all in all I think it's a mixture of things. The fact he's only one year into a new deal, loves the club, appreciates the adoration of the fans, enoys the city, love Steven Gerrard and it is willing to give the manager (and the club) a few months to sort itself out and prove we've got a short (and long) term future allied to the fact thaty City were probably the only genuine buyer out there for him.

Looking like he's going for less than we paid for him, and without much struggle over the supposed £25m we wanted. I said the buyers held the key cards, we have little choice but to sell and they knew they'd get an acceptance sooner or later. Delaying any longer would leave no time to spend the money, or if none is to be spent, jeopardise the move altogether.

Absolutely agree, and to those wishing him well, the reason the fee is so low is that Barca knew they could get him on the cheap. At a time when we were prepared to accept his wish to move but needed a fair price in return Mash's antics seriously undermined our bargaining power.

he says "I love the club (Liverpool) and the fans"

yeah right   :talktothehand

Spot on, Woof.  Masch's antics on Monday played a role in our dismantling and they looked to have knocked a couple million quid off his transfer fee in the process.  Thanks for nothing you ungrateful little tw.at.  :no

Barcelona tactics finally work on Liverpool as they get their man

It has now been revealed that Liverpool FC has agreed to sell Javier Mascherano to FC Barcelona for £17.2m (plus an additional £3m in bonuses), but there has been no mention of Hleb going the other way in Liverpool’s announcement.

The Argentina skipper had reportedly refused to play for the Reds vs Man City last Monday, and it was the last straw for Hodgson who had been doing all he can to keep the midfielder at Anfield.

“Liverpool Football Club have agreed terms for the transfer of Javier Mascherano to FC Barcelona,” read the statment on the Liverpool official website. “The Spanish club have now been given permission to speak to the Argentina midfielder.”

Barcelona did the same on their website with a statemnet that reads: “FC Barcelona and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of Javier Mascherano to the club for the next four seasons,

“The deal was closed after the intense efforts made by the club in recent times, thanks to the committed and available to the player himself in the negotiations.

“FC Barcelona will report the details of the operation once the player passes the relevant medical and permanently close its transfer. Javier Mascherano are expected to arrive in Barcelona this weekend.”

So the bottom line is that Barcelona tactics of unsettling players has finally paid off, never worked on Arsenal with Fabregas but it has with cash strapped Liverpool.

The Liverpool fans will probably be glad to see the back of Mascherano and Barcelona can only hope that they don’t one day find out that they have a player on their books that will go on strike when he does not get his way.

Great player, but always had a nasty streak to his play. Diving, play acting and being a bit of a c**t were regular aspects of his game.

Sad to see that this behaviour was carried on off the field too. Fair enough he wanted to leave, but refusing to play for Liverpool?   :no

so long, enjoy your bit part at Barca you ungreatful to$$er

Is £18 million the selling price? Round about the same price we bought him for? Yes, I think he was sold for less than he was worth. We should have held off for a higher price. Good riddance, I say. Will Roy have enough time to buy a striker with the money? I certainly hope so.
