Cesena were promoted to Serie A back in May after finishing as runners-up in Serie B.

So it appears there was logic behind the signing of Jones and not just the 'wasted money' mantra.

Roy Hodgson today confirmed that Diego Cavalieri looks set to leave Liverpool - but the boss dismissed speculation that Ryan Babel could move.

Goalkeeper Cavalieri will hold talks with Italian side Cesena after our Europa League play-off first leg with Trabzonspor.

His likely departure follows the arrival at Anfield this week of stopper Brad Jones, who was not signed in time to be eligible for Thursday's Europa League clash.

Hodgson told his pre-match press conference: "Diego has done a marvellous job for the last three years.

"He's a very good goalkeeper and a very good person, but he made it clear to me at the start of the season that after three years of watching Pepe play every week he might, if he's not careful, lose his goalkeeping ability or his status as a first-team goalkeeper.

"He made it clear he'd like to leave and find a club where he'll be able to play on a regular basis, so we set about the task of finding someone we thought would be as good a complement to Pepe Reina as Cavalieri has been.

"That's why Brad Jones has come in. He's the man we've chosen to back up Reina, put him under pressure and, most importantly, be ready to play.

"Diego will travel to Cesena after the game tomorrow night for a medical."

The Brazilian's departure would make Jones the recognised number two to Reina, and he is likely to feature regularly if we reach the Europa League proper.

Hodgson added: "We aren't in the Europa League group stage yet but if we were to succeed in doing that there's a chance someone like Brad will get a game on a reasonably regular basis. That would give Pepe the chance he needs to rest. But first we need to get there."

I hope to god he isnt going to rest Pepe in anything other than CC. GKs IMO dont need resting .

do you think it's a waste of money now signing him, or do you wish you'd have given roy a bit of time before declaring 2.5M was a waste of money to spend?

I still think its poor signing and there are better GK out there with the same kind of money

Thought i was on ignore ?! Still think its a waste of money to buy someone to sit on the bench for 3 years and would rather that money went towards another player in a more crucial area that we need and have a ressie keeper on the bench or look for a freebie keeper .

There is that option as well - if we were going to spend money on a keeper i would rather of looked towards someone like Lee Camp or some of the young english keepers with a future ahead of themselves

How much did we pay for Cavellri ? was it any less, he sat on the bench and for this best part of his LFC career and he never got a look in.

Secondly we are hardly going to buy a quality striker for 2.5M are we?

No idea how much we paid for caverlli and he isnt the subject at hand and we werent in financial problems when we bought him .

Im talking about right now - yes 2.5 mil isnt going to get you a quality striker but add it to the money we paid for poulsen thats 5 mil that could of be used towards getting a new striker .

We paid around 3M for Cavelleri and it's clear that Roy doesn't have the kind of money to burn like our previous manager did.

If Roy had enough money he would have moved to get in a quality player in. In fact the only funds he is likely to get are from the Mash sale and in case you hadn't noticed Mash is still here. And the fact the Cavelleri wants out means Roy thinks he needs to bring in another keeper, I'd personally go with his opinion regarding our squad players (who we need and don't need, who we spend money on or not) than your opinion.

He's probably just broke even on his net spend now, he's brought in Cole, Poulsen, Jones for 7M and sold Yossi for 6M. That's not bad business.

Anything to discredit the manager, I mean you was the only who wasn't happy with the J.Cole signing, which I find b.loody odd. :upside:
