Liverpool have agreed a £2m deal with Middlesbrough for goalkeeper Brad Jones and have finalised the £5.5m signing of Christian Poulsen from Juventus.

Liverpool, who hope to agree a new one year contract with defender Jamie Carragher, 32, this week, have reportedly been offered Barcelona midfielder Alexander Hleb as a potential makeweight in a deal for Javier Mascherano but the Argentinian is still expected to join Inter Milan.

Forget Poulsen for a minute, why are we spending 2 million on another keeper?
How about we buy what we need first. We need atleast one striker, come Purslow pull your finger out. WTF are we waiting for? Maybe he cant be botherd now he knows he`s soon out of a job.  ???

I think maybey has something to do with the amount of homegrown players needed in european/PL matchday squad.?

One of the obvious positions to take up 1 of the homegrow allocation (if struggling for quality youth) would be substitute keeper.

Currently our reserve goalie is a Brazilian, no?

Just a thought

That makes sence mate, cant argue with that.
Silly me. :D

As I said yesterday I think Poulsen will do a tidy enough job in the role he`ll be played and would be surprised if he`s seen as a flop come the end of the season.
Wouldnt necessarily say good signing yet though, but certainly not a bad one either.
Dont judge a book by the cover, unless you cover just another, because blind exceptance is a sign,

He can't afford to gamble on youth in such an important area of the pitch, he doesn't have dosh to get a world class replacement . So he goes and buys someone who he can trust to do a job from the off . No settleing in  no fannying about . Straight in the to protect the back four. Bargain if you ask me . Poulson serves his purpose at the moment and i reckon he will play alongside and not instead of LUCAS.

Thats difficult mate, I don't see it to be honest and I think it also brings back the 2 defencive midfield debate again. I think Poulson would do well with Gerrard in center of midfield. The Dane can do a pretty good job breaking up play and marking. from what I've seen of him, his positioning is better than Mascherano (seriously), good game reading, good passing and good in the air as well. However, he lacks the tenacity and determination we had in Mascherano, but I do think he will do well as an ''anchor'' role. Lets get Gerrard playing between him and Joe Cole/Aquilani.

I'm inclined to think this is an OK signing, though too expensive. He isn't going to set the world on fire, but now that Inter look to have some money, perhaps Masch is off for 20-25 mill. If so, there is plenty of money for a back up striker and another LB.

I'm more interested in:

a) will Inter make a big money move for Masch?
b) will Roy get the money to spend?
c) who will he buy with it?

Poulsen seems like a reasonable buy, but it is the three questions above that are important I think.
"Life is not just about money. There are other things, important things that have a different kind of value. Anyone from Liverpool could tell you that."

I think Poulsen has enough tenacity in him. He is like a Mark Van Bommel. He will break up play in anyway he can, in fact, i dun really like the way he play his football when he was plying his trade in the Bundesliga. A 'dirty' player some would say.

It seemed like 5 or 6 million pounds for him is expensive to many people BUT, if you were to consider his pedigree (almost 80 caps for Denmark, played at the highest level in Serie A and Bundesliga) , i would say that its a shrewd signing by Roy Hodgson.
A safe kind of buy, typical hodgson signing. He will do fine for us barring any injuries.

Hopefully he will be better than Van Bommell.  His rubbish and is simply a kicker. It's all good being able to break up the play but I still want someone who actually can pass the ball.

Another piece of paperwork Liverpool are waiting to receive is international clearance for new signing Christian Poulsen.
Should Liverpool receive that today, Hodgson will be in a position to consider whether the Denmark international can go straight into the squad to face Arsenal.

Hodgson, however, must also consider what to do with want-away midfielder Mascherano, who has spoken of his determination to quit Anfield this week.

He trained with the rest of Liverpool’s squad yesterday afternoon after returning from international duty with Argentina and is fit to play against Arsenal.

Yet Hodgson must decide whether Mascherano is in the right frame of mind to deal with such an assignment or instead go with someone who is fully focused.

Meanwhile, Poulsen – who has been assigned squad number 28 – has revealed he did not hesitate when the chance arose to join up again with his old boss.

Poulsen and Hodgson enjoyed a successful year with FC Copenhagen in 2000-01 and the 30-year-old is hoping history repeats itself on Merseyside.

“I had two good years with him so I hope to carry that on, and hopefully he’ll be satisfied with my qualities,” said Poulsen.

“Roy didn’t have to say that much because Liverpool is known all around the world, and for people in Denmark, Liverpool are the biggest club in England .

“I started a little bit later because of the World Cup but I have done (a full) pre-season with Juventus.

“I didn’t play the last matches in the Europa League because of the move to this club.

“I am feeling fit but of course it’s a decision for the manager and the staff.”

Don't you just love the Danes  always ready to adopt the language of Scouse  :D

just wanted to throw some info from the danish news and papers:

from Ekstrabladet:

Poulsen Makes Liverpool Popular, its gonna cost the danish betting system a lot of money if Liverpool takes the title in Premier League
The Dane's shift from Juventus to Liverpool has made them the highest betted team.

-we give the lowest odds on Manchester United to take the title, Liverpool has a 12x return and its actually gonna be quiet expensive
for us if they win considering how many betted on them this year. Peter Emmike, Danish betting system.

--------------------------------------------------------

Poulsen to bolddk.com:

- Liverpool is a special club, in both England and the world. I'm extremely please that this worked out. I'm very excited to get started.
The coming days will let me show how good my form is. I've been training with Juventus of course, but when the move to Liverpool came closer I didn't get involved in the training as much
and I have purposely not been playing in Europe League so I wouldn't be permitted against playing for Liverpool.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

according to sporten.dk ... Poulsen should be ready to get picked on, as they have apperently been looking through the liverpool fan sites and people are generally concerned about his harsh playing style.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

poulsen to BT, when asked if he is gonna be in the starting eleven

- I believe in myself, and I'm convinced the Manager knows what he bought. I realise in a club as Liverpool, just like Juventus
you have to proove yourself in training everyday to be part of the team.
I'm feeling ready, I've allready had my first training with the team and I'm ready.. but of course its the managers decision.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Liverpool Legend, Jan Mølby on Poulsen:

- I think he is gonna love the way they play in Premier League. Its a high tempo a lot of pressure on the ball all the time and you go head in everytime, and great support from the fans.
I think he will fit in really good at Liverpool, in Italy you tend to fall asleep when playing, thats not gonna happen here.
They bought him to be a permanent player, no doubth about that, and they are going to sell Mascherano. His part forwads on the field will be more limited as Gerrard and Cole are allready there, which fits him perfectly. In Juventus they allways forced him to push forwards and be the playmaker, which didn't really suit him. As we all know from the national team his best talent is to be a play-stopper.

-Some might question Poulsen as a player in Liverpool and ask if you couldn't have gotten a better player, but in the end they gotta trust Roy Hodgson and Roy knows Poulsen and Poulsen is the Man Roy wants, adds Mølby.

---------------------------------------------------

on a side note, "voted best foreign player in the past 25 years in Spain, Legend and top 10 playermaker ever, Michael Laudrup laughs"

'Roy made a bargain, maybe he could sell my house?'

He is similar to Van Bommel, but not as good.

What you need to know about new Liverpool FC midfielder Christian Poulsen

1. Poulsen was born in Asnaes, Denmark on February 28, 1980 - the same date Public Sleeping Day is celebrated.

If he had been born a day later, he would now only be seven and a half years old as 1980 was a leap year.

2. He has worked with Roy Hodgson before, figuring in FC Copenhagen's 2000/01 title-winning 2000-01 season, having joined them from amateur club Holbæk B&I where he started his career.

3. He played in all three of Denmark's 2002 World Cup finals group stage games but missed their second round exit to England through suspension.

4. He moved to German side Schalke 04 after that World Cup, helping them win the 2005 German League Cup and being named Danish player of the year in successive years, the first player to do so.

5. He played for Denmark in Euro 2004 and his abrasive midfield style certainly rubbed Italy's Francesco Totti up the wrong way when the Roma midfielder was sent off for spitting at Poulsen.

Totti issued a full public apology for the incident, while also claiming that he was 'severely provoked' by Poulsen, and years later before the two were due to go head-to-head in Serie A, bitterly commented, "It's easy to talk now.. he could have come and told the truth at the hearing the day after.

"I don't think he adds anything at a technical level."

6. In Schalke's 2005/06 Champions League campaign, he had a run-in with Milan's Rino Gattuso at the end of their match in the San Siro.

Milan accused Poulsen of kicking Brazilian superstar Kaka behind the referee's back and surrounded him at the final whistle despite having won the game 3-2.

Poulsen responded with a sarcastic thumbs up.

Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti later branded him a coward and Kaka called his footballing style "not just" while Poulsen later said Gattuso was childish and hoped he felt embarrassed for himself.

7. His four-year deal at Schalke ran out in 2006 and he signed for Spanish side Sevilla on a free, helping the reigning UEFA Cup holders beat European champions Barcelona 3-0 in the UEFA Super Cup final on his debut.

8. His taste for controversy hit new heights during Denmark's Euro 2008 qualifier with Sweden in June 2007 at Copenhagen's Parken Stadium (where Liverpool played Brondby in the 1995 UEFA Cup).

With the match level at 3-3 and entering stoppage time, Poulsen retaliated to aggression from Swedish striker Markus Rosenberg by punching him while inside the penalty and referee Herbert Fandel, on the advice of his linesman, gave a penalty and showed Poulsen the red card.

Before the spot kick could be taken, a Danish fan (whose identity is still protected by a Danish court injunction) ran onto the field and grabbed the referee by the neck while trying to attack him. Fandel immediately abandoned the match - which was later awarded to Sweden as a 3-0 victory.

Poulsen apologised for his behaviour while maintaining he had been provoked and was banned for three international fixtures, despite criticism from Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, a fan pressing charges against him for the attack on Rosenberg, a member of the Copenhagen metropolitan police calling for a 30 day jail sentence and the Danish Minister of Justice wanting him permanently excluded from the national team. Coach Morten Olsen recalled him to the national team at the end of his suspension in October 2007.

The fan who attacked the referee was sentenced to 20 days in prison (after appealing the initial suspended sentence of 30 days) and was later threatened with legal suits from the Danish FA and the Parken Stadium for lost revenue.

Only the Danish FA sued in the end and they won their case, being awarded 120,000 Euros.

9. Poulsen admits his playing style is driven by his fierce will to win:

"On the field, I like to win the game. You have some rules when you play and I try to play within these rules. Of course, sometimes you can perhaps step over the limit of what is allowed, but every footballer at this level hates to lose and they will fight and do almost everything they can to win the game."
